It's reported that Newcastle paid Brighton circa £6m in compensation to get Ashworth. Suspect they will be looking to recoup closer to £10m to see him leave early.

We consistently piss away tens of millions on crap players who contribute nothing. What's the issue with paying a few million to fill such an important leadership role?

Because we have hired a CEO who is focused on us not overpaying in terms of wages and fees anymore?

Newcastle fans are losing their minds over this. They have resorted to calling us Newton Heath on Twitter

It makes me laugh.

United are like Sideshow Mel. The football world wants to just see us tied up, hair on fire and pies lobbed at our face for their entertainment.

When we threaten to stop being the subject of their ridicule and show the potential we really have, they all lose their heads and cry into their froot loops

This is a great analogy. After 20 odd years of enraging them with our success, we've given them a decade of comedy (albeit still winning more trophies in that decade than most of other clubs put together), and at the back of their minds is a fear that one day we might go back to being great again.

I noticed yesterday how desperate they were on sky for Luton to get it to 2-2 so the comedy could continue.

We should make a Geordies (or whatever their forum is called) goes into meltdown thread.

I'd love to read their fans' reactions to this.

The definition of insanity of doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results. If we overpay now when do we stop?

The club has a mountain to climb trying to get the costs of the team under control whilst we still have people vastly overpaid at the club. It's difficult to sign a new player on realistic wages when they can see someone else at the club who are on two or three times more than them. It's going to take time and patience to unpick but just rushing and paying whatever someone asks (or compromising halfway on a payment that is still ridiculous) is not going to get us to the promised land.

this, they have become a bit too big for their boots recently especially over on X

It will be £2m in the end. There’s not a single scenario where a non playing member of staff is worth more than their contract.

Except when this very same person left us and we placed him on gardening leave until Newcastle paid a negotiated compensation. The amount was considerably more than £2m.

Oh and when Chelsea signed our manager for £18m, plus our entire backroom for negotiated compensation.

I admire everyone’s devotion to their own team and club’s interests, but your post as with several above is just pure tribalism with no basis in fact or reality. It’s magical thinking.

Couldn't we just let Newcastle pay his gardening leave till near the summer and then buy out his contract at a slightly better rate?

We'd let Newcastle waste their money for the same outcome

Did anyone read the Samuel luckhurst article on this? Saying they should think of a number, double it, triple it, 60 mil at least!

Thought he was a United guy?

Probably because Brighton had buyout clauses on all their staff contracts. There's no suggestion Newcastle have done that and there's no desire for United to pay the silly money Cheslea were willing to either. You can't just say someone is worth £20m and not have a £20m buyout clause.

Magical thinking is believing a staff contract is worth north of £20m when you don't have anything other to back it up than "we value it at that price". Take that to the free market, see how far it gets you.

We could in theory but I doubt we actually will. The Athletic were reporting we want to make moves quickly last week so it would be a bit of a departure from that if we try to make Newcastle sweat as a negotiation tactic.

Pretty sure there's a limit to how long gardening leave can be. You can't just put someone on it for life and keep paying them not to work. Also, gardening leave is where you get paid to not show up to work, if you get a new job the gardening leave stops and you're now employed by someone else. It's not some sort of golden handcuff situation.

I'm sure there are various appointments around Ashworth that we can pursue anyway. We can draw it out if needed in my opinion - I am not 100% sure what value Ashworth will add before the summer window If he's not a recruitment specialist. Depends how early he can get through the doors I guess. If he were here by April or May then sure, he has a month to integrate with his staff to align them. If not, what can he really do in realtime?

Would have thought Ashworth would have been given assurances by us that we'd do everything we could to make sure he's able to join, if not straight away, then relatively soon. Who wants to sit out two years of their career?

Go and sit on the beach for a few months at Newcastle's expense. Just don't walk into a Saudi Arabia embassy

If you accept a new role contrary to the terms of the gardening leave then you’re in breach of contract and your original employer can take steps to restrain you from doing so. That’s the entire point of gardening leave.

Hilarious reading their fans reaction to this. Clowns acting as if it's gonna be sidestep.

Quite a few, he'll be on full pay. And two years isn't that long.

Thanks

There's a sense of it from opposition players and managers too. If they want a United player sent off, there's a tight offside, or some other decision that could go either way, and it's not given in their favour - they seem extra bemused by it. As if because it's against United, you have to give them the decision, or it's unfair. United can't have all them fans, all that history AND the decisions too.

Then you get the things like the Luton boss making a snide remark yesterday that because United are winning it's only 4 mins added time. Yet won't make a peep when Liverpool need a winner and are given 10+ minutes added time.

Really hope the INEOS vision pays off. Will make it extra sweet when United start title challenging again and you start seeing grown men with kids and jobs being genuinely traumatized by it.

It depends how drawing out negotiations will be received by Newcastle as well. It's probably in our interests to at least attempt to keep negotiations amicable otherwise the process will be arduous for everyone.

That said, respect works both ways. If Newcastle continue to take the piss with their valuation then we have every right to make life more difficult for them too. Hopefully common sense will prevail and both teams will come to an acceptable compromise.

I'm sure Newcastle's owners would prefer to chain him to a radiator and break out the bone saw.

I think Newcastle's FFP is worse than ours, they cannot afford to stretch this out as much. This is just a hunch though, I can imagine the snapdragon sponsorship & Ratcliff's investment boosts our FFP, together with some very sellable assets in the window.

Who the feck has a 2 year gardening leave anyway? How important do Newcastle think their shit actually is? It's not like he knows where the bodies are buried or something...

Wait a minute...

I thought employees other than players at a club were just employees? Not contract based? If he wants to resign it’s up to him? Am I missing something here? If he quit Newcastle they stop paying him. End of it?
