Daley Blind - Deal Confirmed

Blind looks like one of those players who's most impressive off the ball and I don't think we've had a good water carrier since Park left. I can see people warming to him fast if he does as much running as it appears he does in the clips.

Probably around 15 times.

I've watched him in Holland and I disagree with your assessment. He's very similar in his play to Hargreaves and very similar in his running and athleticism. Both very clever footballers.

Not that it matters but after hearing about the tweet he favorited, he also favorited this a couple of months ago

Five left footers! Di Maria, Shaw, Herrera, Rojo and Blind. Next to RVP, Mata and Evans. (?) Shame we've lost Giggs and Paddy.

Herrera and Evans are right footed.

He promoted Blackett primarily due to being left footed as well, my guess and James. Januzaj is there too.

There are two ways of looking at this deal really.

1) We have failed to get our top targets so have been forced to go for Blind

2) We have finally been able to start to move on the likes of Cleverley which has given us the green light to bring in replacements like Blind

Personally I feel it is more like option 2. It feels like no coincidence that 24 hours after bids are accepted for Cleverley/Kagawa and we have solid interest for a few of our players we move in for Blind. That's not to say he has been bought as another big marquee signing, nor does it mean it will be our last bit of business before Monday night. We can't offload a number of average players and bring in a number of superstars. It is not possible (even if we could afford it) to keep everyone happy and the squad balanced.

I do feel LVG has another surprise in him before the close of play. We all know that the transfer window is like a game of cat and mouse. Ajax wanted 20m or more for Blind yet we have waited and appear to have got him at 14m which in this day an age is reasonable.

Unless you feel he will be worse than Cleverley, Anderson and Fletcher in the midfield then I see no reason to moan about this signing. We are trimming our squad with more technical, versatile players. This seems to be something LVG is keen on doing. Signing players like Rojo and Blind may not set the world on fire but every good squad needs them. He is also getting players in who are better on the ball that we currently have and have a far better tactical understanding with the ability to play in several positions. The same can be said about Di Maria except on a more grand scale.

LVG still likes Vidal, he has said so blatantly himself. I would not be the slightest bit surprised if some sort of deal still happened, especially with Juve's interest in Hernandez. Just enjoy the signing and sit tight for Monday!
Great post. Nail on the head!

LvG loves left footers, that much is clear.

Van Gaal (as most managers of the Dutch school) generally prefer to have left footed players on on left sided positions. So ideally they would start with 5 left footers / 5 right footers.

We're also forgetting he's only 24, so has plenty of time and room for improvement.

I get the feeling some people want instant answers and solutions to our problems. That isn't going to happen. Just like Di Maria isn't going to hit a hattrick today and make all our problems go away. It's a rebuild and the whole restructuring of the squad will take time.

I'm convinced he'll turn out to be a good acquisition for us.

Januzaj as well

Probably best to disregard everything i say from now on.

Ever since the deal has been agreed the pages have gone from around 30 to over 50 now in matter of hours. Oh the muppetry .

CDM is surely not is primary position?

He primarily started as a LB. But ever since his promotion to CDM in Ajax, he has played there and has been comfortable doing his job. He isn't the rough tackler type but reads the game well and breaks up play. A lot of Dutch journos have been saying the same.

CDM is surely not is primary position?

Good question, he started off as LB but the last 2 seasons he's played mostly left sided DM. De Boer actually would play him either position depending on the opposition. Against Barcelona, for example, he played left sided DM and was outstanding in both ties.

But, he was terrible there. Back when Ajax supporters use to jeer him every match that was when he was a full time defender. His form improved massively once he was moved to midfield.

Dude, he mostly played as a defender in his professional career. In the '13/'14 season he was used in midfield 60% of the time, rest of his time at Ajax he was their left back and he was pretty good at it. He was only jeered at the start of his career, years ago.

His form did not massively improve once he was moved into midfield, he was just a natural midfielder who was played at left back for a couple of years, and he did as well in defense for Ajax as he did in midfield for them.

When Ajax were beating Manchester City in the Champions League in the '12/'13 season, he played left back and was excellent. He was also left back for Holland at the World Cup, did really well there, so I don't see why you are implying Blind is not a good defender.

Can't disagree with you more. We don't know who LVG's targets are, however Blind plays nothing like the targets been mentioned in the press (i.e. Vidal etc.). Not only that, the Dutch press have stated that United have been after Blind ever since the World Cup. Even amongst Ajax fans there's been a resignation of losing him to United since the World Cup.
This transfer has been on the cards for a while. The impression in the Netherlands is that Blind has been angling for the move all summer, but that Ajax wanted to keep him one more season. In the end Ajax realised that they can't keep a lad of 24 at the club against his wishes.

I think you have misread what I wrote.

I don't disagree with you. I feel we have been holding off on the Blind deal until we have been able to shift on some of our similar players from the midfield. That's why it has happened late. I also think there could well be more business at United before the deadline.

In a midfield of Anderson,Cleverley, and Fletcher the Blind man is king

Left-sided DM in a 4-2-3-1?

Some people do a lot of mental gymnastics to justify a transfer. We know (according to scholes) we were after kroos and fabregas. I think just like Rojo we can assume blind was between option d or e for their respective positions. He's not the answer to our problems buts he's slightly better than what we have currently.

I don't think people on here realise just how much longevity this guy has. He's not a hard runner. He's not burning pace. He's just a very intelligent midfielder who reads play exceptionally well. These kind of players tend to have longevity in their careers. Remember Claude Makelele? He was great even at the age of 30, when he arrived at Chelsea and became arguably their most important player at the time. I'm not comparing the two, just saying that Blind can easily play where he plays (DM) for a good 10 years and we are yet to see how his potential blooms.

LvG should make him captain.

Insert mandatory (and laboured) 'Blind leading the blind' joke.

Nailed it.

 but don't quit the day job ;).

This about covers it.

Teams need intelligent players who get the big picture. Who will play where they are need for the club. The Neville and O'Shea jokes miss the mark. A real team is not Football Manager where everyone slots in seamlessly and the dressing room has no grudges or jealously. Teams need these players and while I would still love Vidal or Strootman I really like this signing.

Amazed at the people who are questioning this and calling him O'Shea light. He's a good player, an upgrade on Cleverley and Fletcher who will cover several places in the first team in case of injuries.

Ask yourselves this, what would you prefer:

1- Playing Anderson, Cleverley, or Fletcher in midfield and keep complaining about the state of midfield, or play a better player in Blind?

2- Site injuries as the only reason Young/Valencia get a starting spot in the team, and then continue to keep calling them shite after a bad match, or start Blind?

3- Play Fellaini in defensive midfield and hope he comes good, or play Blind?

That should be enough to confirm that this is a good signing.

That makes sense. Hopefully we will sign Carvalho or Vidal before the deadline and then the question would be 'is Blind an upgrade on Cleverley?'. Without an additional signing it's hard to get excited about Blind.

How about we judge them at the end of the season?
