Agreed. At LB, even pacy players rarely do him, and he's a very good CB holding his own against some very good forwards since being converted by Louis.
Many have gotten the best of him. He often pressed too high, mistimed and left huge gaps in defense. There's a reason why Smalling was one of the players in the team who covered the most distance when playing alongside Blind.
He was decent at CB, really good actually alongside smalling that one season, below par in midfield and average at lb. Good squad option, but not brilliant.
He’s a regular starter for the Netherlands and got 3rd in WC 2014. Assisted Robben and RVP when they beat Spain 5-1. Has over 60 caps already and might be sniffing at 100 before he hangs up his boots.
You don’t get 100 caps as a regular starter for the Netherlands by being average.
At CM, yeah, his pressing left us open, though it didn't help that he was the only one pressing instead of doing it as a team.
At CB and LB, though, he was rarely gotten the better of. You say that about Smalling, which is true, but Smalling played his best stuff next to Blind because brought a lot of composure to the back and, in general, was excellent there. They brought the best out of eachother which is a staple of most partnerships.
The fact is Blind had weaknesses & Smalling made up for it. Smalling had weaknesses but Blind made up for it. Things could have been added to that defence to make it even better so the blind can't handle Lukaku story could be left in the dust.
Some people can't see the benefits of Blind because they want to see a perfect player instead. Vidic had many weaknesses which were covered by Ferdinands abilities & vice versa - but to these people they were just perfect individually with no weaknesses and Blind was not with many weaknesses.
The guy was just too good to let go like that.
It wasn't hard to improve Smalling - Blind partnership at all to fine tune any weaknesses it had - they had only played together for a bit more than a 3/4 of a season.
P's I also think the Blind LB season when Zlatan was upfront is a tad underrated.
He hasn't got 100 caps. You just made that up. He has 6 caps more than the great Ryan Babel.....

If Blind continued at CB for United we would remain 4th-6th. We need Van Dike/De Ligt/Stam level Dutchies. Not this Blind ish. He's way below the standard. Any one wonder why he is playing for Ajax again at 28 and not a Barcelona or City?

In fairness, the Dutch have been a bang average national team since that world cup. It's not until a year ago that they have seen the likes of VVD, De Ligt, de Jong really step up. Ryan Babel is still in and around the national team...just shows the dearth of talent compared to 2014 and before. That metric of national caps is weak.
Fact is, Blind is an awesome professional, very good footballer but wasn't cut at the top for United to get where they wanted. I loved Daley as a United player and he's represented by the marketing agency I work for...but just didn't work out at the very top for him at United. Not his fault nor United's (i.e. Jose). Very happy he's enjoying his football and life back at Ajax.

Babel is much older and pretty much finished. He won’t be getting many more caps.
Because he played only CB for 3/4 of a season under LVG before not playing at all under Jose or at LB when he felt nice. Why the hell would Barcelona want him then.

The fact is - Blind is no doubt better than Jones, Rojo, Bailly and to some with a certain style is better than Smalling and the apparent average ball player that is Lindelof.
The guy should not have been sold. He is good enough to be atleast the 3rd or 4th CB at this club instead we kept all the tall bulky pacey ones instead that was wanted by Jose and his drooling fans.

just one of the most simplest things that could have been done if you wanted your next stam aswell. If not then Lindelof doesn't look bad there either.
Instead we are worse off and none of our defenders ever feel like a partnership or correlation. I refuse to believe Blind wasn't an important part of that.
He is weak in the air and was exposed by Spurs. I would feel sick seeing him getting roughed up by Jiminez and King

There was a pass he played I think to get Promus away and my god it was a thing of beauty. Think he cut across it as well so it curved back in to the path of promise but it was a driven pass from deep between England players and in to space. Carrick and Scholes would have probably tipped a hat to that pass.

Not much talk about him, because of De Jong, De ligt, Neres, Tadic, Ziyech etc. But one of the best Ajax players this season.
Lies, damned lies, and statistics. It comes to the conclusion that Messi and Frenkie will be a problem because they both move the ball into the attacking phase. I think however it is perfect match, because they occupy different parts of the field. Frenkie to Messi to goal or Suarez. Boom Boom Pow!
I think the real news is that Smalling isnt the final dot towards the left like he's made out to be.
I was surprised how much attacking he does for Holland. At United he did not do so much but again at United he created a lot of chances even from CB.
He's been excellent lately.
Still madness we got rid of him over some of the others still strolling around the pitch for us. I know folks argued he should be a bench player for us with the kind of quality we need but look at where we are now. Top clubs retain those kinds of players.
Blind would certainly get in our team currently. Shame he left, really. He was never a bad player.

Aye. Very consistent and obviously very smart on the pitch to cover for his physical weaknesses. Would have loved to have seen him and Eriksen connect in a United shirt.
Was a very tidy player. I always felt he didnt get a run in the CDM role. I think he could have been terrific in that role sitting in front of the back 4

I liked Blind he was my favourite, such a classy player, one of the few that played with intelligence.
I really liked when he had has man bun too.

He'd get roughed up like he did against Spurs. nothing has changed in that regard. He is not playing against teams who keep the ball in the air thus his lack of aerial dominance creates another Lindelof.
14m was one of the best deals we did post Fergie.

He played a whole season at CB was pretty good. Yes he did have the odd poor game but overall he was very good.
Not to mention he can also fill in at LB and in midfield

I'm very much a Jose fan, even after the mess here, but yup... Really a shame we let blind go.
I have so much hindsight remorse thinking about how our team might look had we kept LVG and signed Mane along with the other attacking players he wanted.
