Cristiano Ronaldo

Incredible player. There's only so much you can do against him and I think we did well. Was disappointed by how easily he bullied rafael so I hope the latter does better next time round.

Also the goal felt fecking terrible.

Ronaldo is the enemy at the moment, he and Madrid stand in our way of progressing to the next round! feck all this lovey dovey shite going on in here!

I find this attitude weirder than the lovey dovey stuff personally. We can still respect a player that did so much for us. Doesn't mean everyone wants him to score against us.

Who said I don't respect the lad? I respect him immensely. Doesn't mean I don't regarding him as the enemy though while these fixtures are going on though.

Who said you don't respect the lad, indeed? I wasn't specifically referring to you, but I find it odd people shouldn't be allowed to reminisce or speak kindly of an ex player at a time when they're most likely to be talked about.
I don't see him as 'the enemy', I see him as someone that I know we have to stifle because I know all too well what he can do.

Respect is different. No United fan would disrespect Ronaldo's contribution for the club. But I agree with Spoony and all, the love in for him on here is nauseating. He can feck off for all I care until we progress to the next round.

It's almost as if we never had any great players play for our club.

See, that's what I don't really get. It makes no difference whether it's now or after we've played them to me.

Priorities. What or how Ronaldo does in these games is secondary to how United does. It's almost as if some people want him to do well which doesn't bode well for our ambitions now, does it?

I don't think they do, they just know what he's capable of. You're allowed to be in awe of someone, even if you're playing them. Although there wasn't much to be in awe about because we did a decent enough job on him for the most part.

I think you need to refer to some previous posts in this thread. You'll get my point.

Fair enough, you make a valid point and that's fine. But it's still weird to me that how Ronaldo does gets ahead of how United do for some people on here. I could swear the day the draw was made there were more posts in here to the tune of 'OMGOMG Ronnie is coming home' than 'So, how do we beat Madrid'.

I do see where you're coming from but I haven't seen anything that makes me think they want him to do better than United.

I think we've found some middle ground where we agree to disagree. I don't think this has ever happened on Redcafe. It feels nice.

Nah, the draw thread and somewhere earlier in this thread, there was some right cringe being thrown about.

Nevertheless, yeah, agreed. I usually don't post in the Ronaldo/Messi threads because of the very same reason. It always end up going around in circles.

It's not just Ronaldo. People were worse when we played Barcelona. I could almost see peoples seaman in their posts when they were talking about Iniesta and Messi.

These are great players, sometimes you just have to sit in awe at their talent. If I could have it any way I would want Ronaldo to have a shocker at Old Trafford. But that's not likely to happen.

So how do people think he'll respond to 'coming home' for the first time? Playing at Old Trafford will be an entirely different experience to a few of his old team-mates showing up at his current workplace.

I imagine the fact that he's had to wait a few years will heighten the emotion of being in front on the OT crowd for the first time and I'm hoping he'll struggle with it, but I'm not sure it's all that likely.

Didn't phase him when he went back to Sporting and that was arguably a more emotional time for him as he spent his childhood years there.

I expect him to thrive....then again I expect United to generaly play a much better game than the 1st leg so it should sort of even itself out.

Nah, his mental strenght is superb. It won't face him.

It's debatable whether Ronaldo -- in his United, not Real, form -- would make the all time United XI side. I say yes, but reasonable minds say no.

But would Ronaldo, in his United form, make a mythical all time Liverpool XI side?

Perhaps a bizarre question, but I'm trying to assess how great Ronaldo (United form) ranks among the greatest footballers in English football.

I would have thought he'd have walked into an all-time Liverpool XI without question. Barnes and Callaghan seem to be the consensus choices on the wings for them, and McManaman even gets a fair amount of serious mentions. Barnes was superb, but Ronaldo is on another level to any winger they've had as far as I can tell.

Ferguson heaps praise on Portuguese

"Messi couldn't score Ronaldo's goal"

02/14/2013

Alex Ferguson said Real Madrid was the better side in the first 45 minutes of the Champions League tie against Manchester United: "In the first half I was disappointed. De Gea produced some fantastic saves. But the away goal is important because Real is a fantastic team on the counter-attack. We've got a great chance".

The Scotsman praised his goalkeeper's performance: "He's improving all season. There was one save in the first half which was superb. He'll be pleased with the way he played in Madrid and I'm pleased for him".

Ferguson is wary of Real Madrid's threat in the return leg at Old Trafford: "As I was saying, we know they are going to be a tremendous counter-attacking team. They will expect a different approach from us and we have to attack them and avoid conceding goals".

The United boss then spoke about Real Madrid and heaped the praise on Cristiano Ronaldo: "I'm proud to see how he has flourished. I don't know how you describe a goal like that. His kneecap is almost at the same height as Evra's head. I don't know if there is a player in the game who can do that. Certainly Lionel Messi couldn't do that".

Ferguson responded to José Mourinho's comments on United's approach to the match: "Of course we tried to win it. We had four attacking players in the team, but it's different when you're away from home".

Fergie's dead right about Madrid counter attacking next game - which is why I think playing Jones in the centre and even Nani and Giggsy may be very risky if we plan on attacking more. All of them can be prone to giving the ball away in dangerous positions which could well be fatal for us.

Erm, of course Messi couldn't do that, he's like 5 feet talk. God forbid Cal ever sees these words from Fergie.

anyway...

What's the co-commentator in that video called? I've heard him a few times and he always makes me laugh.

A Geordie named Ray Hudson. Some of his best bits below. Gotta say, he might be as shite as most other pundits, but at least he's funny.

Also a great goal by Messi that opens the clip, BTW. Love the part about Kathy Bates and the sledgehammer  how random.

I hate Ray Hudson, the wanker always wets himself when Barcelona play.

Rather him then people like Martin Tyler these days to be honest, Tyler never even change his voice at a chance or when we score anymore. He sets himself up to just say and they've got it basically every time we have a set piece. Quite annoying actually, as when you look back on goals sometimes its nice to have an iconic piece of commentary (like solskjaer has done it, etc.)
