No. You were the one who insisted your hero is the greatest footballer ever and went on a rant when someone challenged that assertion.

You could feel free to drop that and we could sticj to discussing Ronaldo alone. You don't get to dictate what discussion takes place when you make a random claim like that.

Wrong again.
Except it’s not random though is it?

1 nice goal scored at 2-0 up in the 90th minute. A decent assist. A tap-in and 3 penalties which he played little part in winning. Didn't see him create much in general, or threaten in the air - 1 good run and pass to Jota today was about it?

Overall, stats are good but don't think he performed particularly well.

Before the Tournament I was expecting to see his all-round game falter and come under the microscope more now that he's in the twilight of his career but have to say I was surprised he still seems mentally sharp in the game. He's still as quick footed and still has a good acceleration on him considering his age.
His passing has always been the more erratic aspect of his play and that's still present and will be til the day he hangs up his boots.

Overall, I'd give him a 7/10.

1-0.

That was always the tie breaker.Ronaldo won the tie breaker and Messi quit on his country.

Not to mention in the CL he is the far superior player with double the goals in the knockout games.

Just stop it’s getting sad.

Is Griezmann better than both of them because he won the worldcup? Weak argument.

Underperformed in the biggest game again.
Try again.
5 goals, 1 assist, with avg rating of 7.95 isn't "underperforming" by any means.
He is top 1 in goals scoring chart, and among top 3 in performance chart.

Its disappointing his team doesn't go any further. But he is the last to blame for sure. Even in his game against Belgium where he didn't score, he still provided 3 key pass (highest in the game) and 4 dribble (highest in the game). In fact he has been excellent in the game.

His comment has no substance. He was just weirdly trying to find a reason to diminish the best player of the last 15+ years.

I think World Cup will be his last tournament for Portugal though, I imagine he still has the legs for it tbh.

That’s fair but you have to bear in mind, he’s a 36 year old and still carrying his team somewhat.

Too much falls on him. Jota should have scored 2-3, Bruno was underwhelming, Santos’ tactics were negative.

Don't really agree with that. Thought he did quite well tonight, often dropped deep to get the team going and worked his ass off for the team. I actually prefer a Ronaldo that is playing like that to one who just stands up front and complains if the pass didn't get to him like during his Real days.
On the other hand, randomly wandering around wherever he felt like instead of making proper forward runs and cuts didn't help Portugal create chances in the first hour.
With Diogo Jota often far away from the box too as he was tasked by Martinez with strict defensive cover duties on the flank.
Things improved in the second half with Felix and then Silva cutting into the box more.

Thing is, the older you get, the smarter you gotta be about how you move.
I don't see this in Ronaldo in the last couple years for Juve and Portugal.

Top goal scorer of the comp, and Portugal get fourth without him. Try again.

What's your take in how Fernando Santos has used Ronaldo this tournament?

Today for example, Diogo Jota and Bernardo Silva should be helping him bring Portugal to the next level, instead, those 2 are "forcing" the coach into playing them and by extension it keeps Joao Felix or Andre Silva in the bench.

Which hurts Ronaldo's performances, the logic tells us that Jota and Bernardo help the team balance with their work rate, and in case of Bernardo, if he was playing at the level he should, he's a better creator than Ronaldo at this stage of his career on the wing but in the end they're playing poorly. They're sending Ronaldo to the striker role where he has less influence, and that makes it impossible for Andre Silva to get into the team with Ronaldo as a winger, where he had his best minutes today.

In my opinion, Santos has been wasting Ronaldo making him play as a Tore Andre Flo for the last 4 years, it would make sense if the other forwards were playing at a high level since Ronaldo can do that better than anyone, but in this tournament it's ben awful for Portugal's chances.

Not sure what else people could have expected from him tonight to be honest? Rarely lost the ball, looked a threat, linked up play nicely at times. He had a good tournament. Football is a team game and these things happen, can’t win them all.

I agree with this fully, Ronaldo alone up top with jota and Silva isolated him and makes his play predictable.

Him winger with Andre Silva striker and jota or Bernardo would of worked far better.

also didn’t help playing the first 2 games with 2 DM players which meant we struggled to get the ball up the pitch.

FS is just a poor and outdated coach.

Ya it doesn't work with him as the lone forward. But having another upfront (Bruno or Silva) disrupts the midfield.

Yeah I agree. I still think even at this age he needs to play coming in from the left.

Adding to my post above, I have a lot of trouble understanding why would someone cage Ronaldo in the area to receive crosses over having him drift in or just roam around stuck to a wing. His off the ball movement is legendary, and his link up play IMO is pretty good in tight areas. He works better with more space... Not less.

But I'm not a coach.

He couldn't really get in the game and he was crowded out when in the box, which is why he started drifting around more.

I've read, seen and heard people say that the style Potugal play is weakening the team overall because it is focused toward him.

Based on tonight's game, I have no idea what they were doing and how it was supposed to suit or be focused toward any of their players.

Yeh WC next year would be his last one, unfortunately he would be 37 by then and I don't think Portual has any chance there, judging to their overall performance in Euro this year. But if he breaks more records I'll be more than happy for him.

In regards to his rivalry with Messi, I am actually happy with Messi leading Ballon D'or by 6-5 to be honest, while Ronaldo is having more big trophies (CL, Euro) and holding more all time records (career, CL, international). Its fair end to their long time rivalry, as its really approaching to the end now, and both would have a fair claim to be GOAT (most Ballon D'ors vs most big trophies/all time records).

I enjoyed the Balon D or until they blatantly forced it out of there hands with modric winning it when it should of been Ronaldo.

They did a similar thing in 2010 with sneijder but that one I let go because Messi Is Messi.

Someone is gonna get banned or locked from this thread very soon
And it would be a good thing. Certain people have just come to troll and sad thing they have been waiting like vultures for the opportunity.

The tap in where he started the attack by clearing a ball in his own box, sprinted 90 meters, made a brilliant run to lure defenders his way, thus creating space for Jota, then once again making a movement that fooled the defenders, for the tap in.

The second half tactics stifled him. His overall influence is obviously light without goals but he’s still the most important player for Portugal.

Well does griezman even compare at club level or as a whole in there careers? Not at all. So that makes no sense.

Ronaldo and Messi are like nothing ever seen at club level. They have all the records, naturally the tie breaker suggested for years by fans and pundits alike was “who would succeed at international level”?

Well Ronaldo did that he won a major trophy (2 if you want to count nations league but I like to say 1 because I’m fair) and he has the major international goal scoring record and the euro record and Portugal best ever finishes have come about after he began playing directly influenced by him.

So yes it is a huge tie breaker.

Feck me just appreciate them both.

You will not change anyone’s opinion and nobody will change your‘s either.

if you like you can upgrade the tap-in to a tap-in he helped set up. i m o, bernardo did much of the work for creating that chance, including a pretty difficult pass.

before today's game, people were saying he was in line for player of the tournament. he wasn't close to that level, and the only reason he was in the conversation was stats.

Yeh Ronaldo should win the 2018 one, Modric isn't worthy winner at all in my honest opinion. He only win it out from a few good games in group stage of WC. That's all he has, but that's somehow enough to create a narrative for him to win it (golden ball in WC, first midfielder to win in over a decade), but without the overall performance to back it up (rather average stats/performance in league and CL over the season).

But overall speaking, I personally think it's fair with Messi having more Ballon D'ors than anyone, to be honest I think he deserves them as he has been performing in exceptional level over the decade, without any notable drop in performance. Speaking of that, Ronaldo deserves all his big trophies and all time records more than anyone too, as he managed himself so well and still has the hunger, fitness and ability to score so many goals. In my eyes, they are different but equal.

Regarding his Euro performance, I am disappointed Portugal couldn't progress any further, but I am happy Ronaldo is having a good tournament even at 36, and broke many all time records (most goals in Euro, most goals in Euro+WC, most international goals).

Messi will grab another Ballon d’or and it will finish 7-5.

The best two players ever and we have our own opinions on who is the best but jeez why argue over it ?
