That's not exactly how it works. The registration and the employment contract are too separate things, unless there is an agreement between Ronaldo and the club, the club is in possession of the registration until the end of June 2023. Now the issue with FIFA is that they don't accept transfer registrations when there is an ongoing litigation.
The most likely option is that Ronaldo and United find a mutual agreement. He is sacked for gross misconduct and either leave with or without compensation.
I’ll admit that I’m not that familiar with the FIFA registration process, but surely if we decide to sack him and pay him nothing, we wouldn‘t be in any position to oppose a registration. We’d accept that he was perfectly entitled to register with a new club and, given there would then be no dispute about the registration, FIFA would ratify it. Indeed, it would be in our interests for him to sign for someone else, as it would reduce the value of any potential claim.
