Adding on a few more details (not a copy-paste) from above posts . They essentially say that Ronaldo to City was virtually imminent yesterday.. before Chief strategist Fergie and Co. finally "woke up" and went about a last ditch hijacking in the final 24 hours.

Agents SAF, Rio, Bruno, Evra, Ole,

Fergie:
Heart of the Strategy. Ferguson is described as playing a “major role” over the 24 hours, phoning Ronaldo, and using his good relationship with Jorge Mendes. He repeatedly pressed Ole to make it happen. He called the United Board to ensure they were doing everything possible "or all hell would break loose" among fans and beyond.

Rio: Almost acting as a broker on behalf of United. Had a passionate conversation with long-time United team-mate, who was genuinely inquisitive about the impact moving to City might have on his United legacy. Counselling Ronaldo over hurt seeing him joining City might cause, set against the joy that returning to OT would bring him and United fans. He's also close to Woodward and made sure United were informed over the financial details. He was still up at 1.30am, sending messages to get the deal moving.

Bruno: Pressed his Portugal captain over phone and text

Evra: Exchanged voicenotes/messages on WhatsApp

Ole: Personally interevened, having also realised he couldn't allow a legendary figure like Ronaldo to go to local rivals without a fight. Long term damage to the club in the eyes of fans and future recruits. Looked at benefits of bring him back: the comeback story, the ultra-professionalism he would bring, etc. He called Woody to hijack the deal, who then agreed instantly to start negotiating.

Rooney: Possibly had a word to Ronaldo as well (article is unclear on this) hence his confidence when asked yesterday.

Woodward: Quick and effiecient negotiation with Agnelli - (the pair having grown closer during the planning for the mooted Super League  ). Glazers also saw it as a Brady - Tampa move so was given the green light.

It was an avalanche of affection that worked. It is believed Ronaldo had given his word to United by 10.30am that morning, before Ole's presser. Current squad are reportedly ecstatic to see him join!

Wow. Some story!

It's a scary thought, but amazingly good parallel. And that gamble paid of in spades. I didn't think it would work for the Bucs, because of the rest of their squad, but I think United's squad is a good bit ahead of that curve, so Ronaldo doesn't have to pick up as much slack as Brady had to.

Ultimately he's chosen the far bigger club and put passion, legacy and sport in front of money and being city's vanity project. Always and forever a different beast of a club to those pretenders who were wetting themselves this morning. Welcome to Manchester indeed.

I remember one or two posters drawing that parallel months ago, but they were not taken seriously.

I love this. Makes me emotional, even!
This club, man.

Ah I'm only slagging. He's been doing for ages. I only found out off here in the past year or so.

I just saw a grown man thinking hes superman and thought what a magnificent bellend, never realised he had a theme tune every time he did !

Well he is our bellend superman with a stoopid theme tume again

Fergie - ''Nice kneecaps you've got there Ronnie, be a shame if something happened to them.

This is just fecking wild. It's completely out of the blue, completely unexpected for me, yesterday all I saw was blue, then suddenly today, woosh.

I'm completely shocked as I never thought he'd play for United again. I have a huge love for this dude, and Man Utd too. For years since he left it's been a few of us only on his performance thread, suddenly he has a player performance thread... For united. Which will have hundreds of you guys talking about him, hopefully in good light.

Part of me is afraid. I never wanted him to return. I was afraid he wouldn't be as good as the first time. I was afraid he'd tarnish his status by going back and things going wrong.

I'm still afraid of that. I see how you guys sometimes criticise other United players, and I'm afraid Ronnie won't be good enough and everyone will jump on him. I'm afraid he'll do well, but United won't win any trophies. Etc, etc.

But I trust him more than anyone. I never doubted him at any point in his career. He always proved everyone wrong. He will kill himself to be remembered highly for his 2nd stint at the club.

If I trust anyone to come and help United go a notch above, it's this dude right here. Some of you don't believe him. Give him the benefit of doubt. His career and professionalism speaks for himself.

 Ok thicko
It’s not like he raised a particularly bad point though, he outscored Lukaku and scored a bundle in the CL which suggests that the PL probably ain’t still too fast for him.

Epic. Obviously worth it for the nostalgia / prestige but I reckon he fits in nicely to the team too. He’ll get annoyed that we can’t control the midfield but he’s been brilliant in counter attacking teams before, and Bruno and Sancho will thrive there. Guaranteed to score a cracker from a Pogba hollywood ball!

Didn't he say he was never gonna come back? Then again he also said he was staying and the Madrid dream was dead. Anyway it's fantastic to have a United great return and hopefully we'll get the same boost we did when Ole became manager.

Thank you for summarizing all that. What a story!

I'm honestly not fussed at the moment about whether he's still good enough or not. Him going to City would've been heartbreaking to a lot of fans, Fergie and Ole knew that very well, and in a true fergie fashion, they stopped it from happening.

I also think Ronaldo understands that he's 36 and he'll try his best to prolong his career, so I think he'll appreciate that he can't start every game. His great mentality and winning attitude should really benefit the younger players. I trust that Ole will manage him well, and I think the players will welcome his presence. I love Cavani and I think this will somehow limit his playing time, but it is what it is.

This is great people, he doesn't need to score 40 goals to be influential.
