Cristiano Ronaldo - Man Utd Player

Highlights:

  • Ole called Woody Thurs. night to press him to make a move - Woody picked up the phone and started negotiations with Juve
  • Fergie played a "major role" in the last 24 hours both calling Ronaldo and Mendes to sell them on United, as well as members of the United board
  • Ronaldo was "genuinely inquisitive" about how moving to City would impact his legacy
  • Rio talked him through, ensured him that it would ruin his legacy at United forever, and relayed financial details to Woody (with whom he is close). Rio was up through 1:30AM helping to broker the deal
  • At the same time, Bruno, Evra, and Ole all got involved and personally reached out to Ronaldo to show "a wave of affection"
  • Ronaldo had given his word by 10:30AM today that he would be signing with us (prior to Ole's presser)
  • Mendes tried all summer to get Ronaldo to United but we held out because we did not believe he would actually leave Juve
  • City had a fully agreed deal with Ronaldo and Juve teammates believed that's where he was going
  • Suspicions that Mendes used City's interest to get us to act, which may impact future relationship with City
  • Ronaldo has been trying to leave Juve since last summer
  • Fergie is one of the only people in the world who Ronaldo still defers to
  • Our squad is allegedly delighted to have him and coaches feel he will up the levels in the dressing room "like Mr. Miyagi"
Thanks

The younger players in our squad must be absolutely buzzing! Rashford, greenwood and sancho. What a player to learn from

What a signing. As a non-United fan, this makes me want to play Fifa 22 with United and I haven't played Fifa in ages. Ofcourse I'll be playing Donny in midfield over one of Fred or McT.

This all happened so fast. Yesterday and this morning it was DEFCON 1 with City. By the afternoon it was full steam ahead with United and boom, done.

Without the ex players we would still be monitoring the situation. Rio had to be the middle man to woodward it seems

"Mendes tried all summer to get Ronaldo to United but we held out because we did not believe he would actually leave Juve"

This part sounds like face saving from Mendes. Making him a martyr risking his future business with Man City.

If it has been all summer, I doubt we would leave it this late. It's only clear this past week with Ronaldo exclusion from Juventus game that he's moving. I can suspect Ronaldo-PSG was in their mind until Messi switch. They're just weighing up options, and us being the best solution at this stage of the window. Not some thoughtful Mendes' moral driven motive, holding out until us changing our mind.

I agree, PSG was likely the ideal option that they were shooting for before Messi moved. Always important to view stories like this from the angle of all involved, Mendes included.

Ok, now when we are little bit calmer now; how come decided to sign him? Was that our plan from beggining? We don't have money for dmc but have this amount money for him? When we entered in race? Does this mean no Haaland/Kane next summer? Damn, so many questions...

I‘ve been busy with guests at home. Just fell down to my sofa, opened YouTube and my jaw fell down too. OMG! I’m not sure should I be happy or worried.

We already get the ball into the box when no one's there so I don't think we'll have to adjust much.

Exactly. We do get the ball in the box but Martial is rarely there. Now just cross into the box. Also he is very good in the air too. We have an areal threat with Ronnie, Cavani, Maguire, Pogba and McTominay if he plays. Or I forgot Varane.

That doesn't make any sense. If Mendez was doing that, surely it is because Cristiano asked him and he really wanted to leave Juve. How is it possible that United continued to believe or doubt Ronaldo's tenure at Juventus?

I should have worded it better - the fear was that Ronaldo would not be allowed to leave Juve (i.e. Juve would not want to sell or would want too much money) and we allegedly did not want to get drawn into negotiations (that would inevitably become very public) only to get stung.

De Gea
Varane
Maguire
Shaw
AWB
Bruno
Pogba
Sancho
Cavani
Ronaldo
Fred

What a frightful first 11

Im getting goosebumps just thinking about Old Trafford belting out Viva Ronaldo.. this is so surreal.

According to whom, you can't just make stuff up and pass it off as fact. Unless you are on the cafe ....wait wha???

Bit confused about your post here - I was clearly offering my opinion that PSG was likely the ideal option that Mendes was targeting, but that obviously became a non-starter when Messi went there. There were reports last summer that Mendes had offered Ronaldo to them (PSG) and they declined because they already had en eye on Messi's free agency. Not that hard to draw a line of logic between last summer's reports and the reports that Ronaldo had decided to leave Juve this summer and make an educated guess that he and Mendes had a plan that blew up when Messi left Barca.

Summer of 2003., vacation on the seaside with my parents. Almost nothing happening in the transfer market (we missed Ronaldinho) and my dad was reading newspapers and told me: "Son, Ronaldo is coming to Manchester"! I was so out of mind, happily jumping around, who would think that United would sign Ronaldo the 9! After 5 minutes of my joy, in cold manner he added: "But it's Cristiano not the real Ronaldo". In that moment I felt like someone dropped the bucket full of crap on my head haha, and everything after is history.
Today when this happened the feeling was same like those 5 minutes in 2003. when "the real Ronaldo came here" and surely he is! Welcome home where all of this started!

What a surreal day.
I left for work this morning amidst the rumours/talk of Ronaldo going to City. Actually had a chat with a City fan, who was quite happy to gloat that they were getting him. He spent an age talking about lineups and where they could fit him in, and what a forward line it would be. "We don't even need Kane now that we've got Ronaldo".
Walked to my car before making the journey home and thought I'd check the football news. Saw the words Ronaldo and Manchester and thought that this was confirmation that City had actually got him...and then had to sit down when I saw "United" in the headline. Must have read that headline about 4 or 5 times before I understood it. Checked several other sites to see the same thing and spent about 5 or 10 minutes in the car, engine off, scrolling through that now famous RedCafe transfer thread. My smile grew wider and wider with each and every page.

Did not wake up expecting this. What a day.  :wenger:

What a day to remember. A year later you'll still be able to tell this story.
