I completely agree with a lot of you here. He was one of the few people that gave a s**t last year. It was a miserable dressing room. And I'll wait until I hear him actually say anything about actually leaving before feeling like he's some unbelievable traitor. Some of the media stories are probably partly true, but a lot of them are just total speculation. So making an opinion towards his actions based on 20% of the facts just does't do anyone justice. Maybe he's being a massive prick, but maybe he's just looking for other options and working well with the team to work things out with everyone on the same page...and the severity is getting totally blown out of proportion.

But I also feel like theres no scenario that we can let him leave on the free. None. A contract is a contract. We hired him for a job for two years. He either needs to play this year under our circumstances, or leave under our circumstances. If he was worried he wouldn't make the CL he shouldn't have come (and probably should have joined a lesser league than the PL). We need to make a stand against this kind of crap now. He can always retire.

Why shouldn't Ronaldo make financial sacrifices if he wants to leave, like for example, giving up all his bonuses he is due when the contract expires and going to a club that plays in CL for a low salary like 100k weekly? if he does that, I am certain plenty of top clubs will try to get him, and that way, United can pocket some transfer fee too.

The club has no obligation to entertain his demands, he has a contract, which pays him the highest salary in the squad and he should honor it, and if Ronaldo cares that much about his CL goals, he should be ready to make the financial sacrifices to make a move happen.

Agree with this 100%, especially the bolded part, it can't be something like his current salary being subsidized by United while he gets a loan move to a CL club, if he wants to move, he has to entirely give up his current contract including all bonuses, as well as accepting a new contract with a low salary at a CL club.

I fully agree with that. However that has nothing to do with what I said

Its within Mendez's and Ronaldo's interest to portray the most pessimistic view possible (ie Ronaldo is determined to leave, no club wants to buy him out etc) as that might persuade United to let him go on a free. On the other hand its within United's interest to portray the most optimistic view possible (ie we want Ronaldo to stay, he's got 1+1 year contract left which we plan to activate etc) as that would force the Mendez camp to find buyers ready to spend money on the deal. Its similar to the De Jong saga. Laporta keeps mumbling that De Jong is not for sale even though he had already agreed a fee with us. He does that to keep his price high.

If no club wants to buy him out, which is understandable due to his age and high wages, then I believe Ronaldo and Mendez can afford 15M between themselves to buy themselves out of the contract with United, then maybe some CL clubs will be interested in signing Ronaldo on a free transfer.

But, if he wants something along the lines getting his wages in the new club subsidized so he leaves and no transfer fee for United, or a loan move where United pay most of his salary and he leaves on a loan, then I hope the club rejects those demands out of hand and tell Ronaldo to honor his current contract.

The reason I say all this is United paid a fee for his transfer, plus a huge salary last season, the club invested a lot of money on him, so he can't just expect to move on just because he wants to, unless he makes it worth while for United to release him from his current contract, and if the club holds firm on their stance on Ronaldo, it will send a very strong message to the players and agents, that the club will not kowtow to anyone if it's not in the best interests of the United.

This episode has been one big blow to his ego.

I will say this, I want him to stick around. He's still very good, he will still be a professional and, most importantly, Ten Hag evidently wants him around too.

I agree.

I think that most of the fans are now realising that this idolisation of players is a bit silly tbh. Sure there had been players like Scholes for example who had put the club above any financial benefit. However for most players, football is just a job and they would emotional blackmail fans and treat their employer shabbily if that within their own interest to do so.

What I find frustrating though is Mendez ability to go under the radar and be treated like a respectable agent. Sure the guy look classy with his professional look as opposed to the late Mino who quite frankly looked (and was) a semi illiterate former pizzaiolo with a good eye for business. However when push come to shove Mendez is not that different to Mino. His major clients (ADM, Ronaldo, Cancelo, Jota, James Rodriguez, Falcao) tend to hop from one club to another quite regularly and he also have a knack to extort ridiculous amount of money out of clubs quite early in a player's career (Dias, Darwin Nunes, Felix, Bernardo Silva etc).That should also be taken in account when dealing with Mendez's clients including Ronaldo.
 
We tend to get this with one high profile player every summer that the real reason they're asking for a transfer will come to the fore once everything's settled down and completed but those real reasons don't really materialize and even when they do its usually just trivial sh*te.

Its usually all melodramatic nonsense.
 
Loan him out for 6 months to sporting. Let him get his 3 or 4 goals in the CL group games. They will be out by then, he comes back and becomes a super sub for us to get Utd into top 4!

You know he got a monster contract at United that Sporting will not be able to handle. We are not going to pay him for playing for them. For feck sakes.
 
Love the fact that some people genuinely think that he hasn't be whoring himself around Europe for the past month.

I stand by my prediction. He will get back his 25% reduced salary and probably a bump as well. He will downplay any suggestion he wanted to move clubs.
 
Need to get this guy out of the club asap and by hook or by crook. It was not a coincidence that last year went to shit after he joined us. We were showing progress before that. Last season was full of player's politic and toxic dressing room issues. The worst we have seen for years.

Mate, please explain how he has been professional when he's missed 3 1/2 weeks of pre-season training for no reason - I call BS on the family emergency (didn't at the start but thought he'd be back in a few days, 3 weeks later and he was still in Portugal!). You can be as professional as you want, going to the gym, drinking seaweed water and eating the finest sushi money can buy - but missing 3 1/2 weeks of training under a new manager when everyone else is learning says it all to me

His general attitude stinks when - he be subbed and he storms off down the tunnel waving his hands mouthing shite, or whether he's on the subs bench to start with - all of this hugely affects the atmosphere in the squad

The squad seems to have bonded better without him there and I'd rather it stay like that than be the CR 7 show

Could well be. If no club of sufficient means wants him then he can't go anywhere but that doesn't mean he can't leverage his discontent for better pay as a fallback.

And at least some saps will quickly go back to worshipping him in that scenario, chalking it up to contract negotiations with no actual intention of leaving. And we're left trying to adapt the team to playing around Mr. Ego without the benefit of all the pre-season work that might have made that easier.

Hopefully we get rid of him but there should be real concern that we won't.

It’s normal to train individually to get back up to speed before joining the main group, no?

Most reports seem to suggest he could feature against Rayo on Sunday.

It's always a bit grim seeing narcissists who have managed to dismiss or ignore any criticism their whole lives confronted by a reality they can no longer avoid - in this case, that he's over the hill, toxic and no-one wants him.
 
We really need a cohesive and united dressing room next season to stand any chance of a good season during our major rebuild transition. That means Ronaldo has no place in it.

This guy still thinks that he is the superstar and has ego bigger than everyone else.

Disillusioned after last season and missing out on champs league but following personal stuff in Portugal spoke to ETH likes the project, loves the club wants to help project it to its former glory.

In reality--- Desperate to leave to play in champ league as its all about goal records and personal accolades, doesnt really care about the club, thinks we havent strengthened a poor squad, however sadly no one wanted him but UTD, we couldnt afford to lose him for commerical purposes so as a sweetener no reduction in wages and gentleman's agreement to let him go on free in Jan window if we are not in champions league contention.
 
What is really going on here? Is he that desperate for CL he is willing to join fecking Napoli or Sporting Lisbon - teams that are in the realms of no chance to win the damn thing.

I smell something different here. There has to be more to his desire to leave. A very strong desire to leave a club he apparently loves! Even willing to take a pay cut.

So what is the real reason? It certainly is more than just CL football.

Is it as simple as ETH told him he'd not be a starter? Or is it deeper

I think Ten Hag would prefer that. As would have Ralf, and even Ole.
 
He'll stay and will try to run the narrative that he never wanted to leave anyway and it was just the press trying to make money.
Sucks for United having to keep paying his wages but the bigger challenge will be for Ten Haag to somehow balance him contributing (he still can be useful in certain moments) without sacrificing too much regarding the overall team while also keeping his pathetic ego in check.
