Cristiano Ronaldo (I stay)

I genuinely think more teams would be interested in him - if he wasn’t having the “too big for the bench” mentality.

Id have loved to have him as our plan B but he turned and became our plan A which ruined everything.

It’s why big clubs won’t go for him plus his wages.

This thing about him being away for so long due to family issues makes little sense. Ronaldo played immediately after his father died and after he lost his new born. So what could make him stay away that long given how professional he is supposed to be?

The probable truth is that he does have a family issue and has been using it as an excuse to keep away while his agent was whoring him around Europe. Otherwise I'm sure he would already have returned.

The ONLY thing I can think which would keep him away and be a genuine family thing is if his Mother was on her last legs, I think her going would destroy him a little.

His mother was critically ill recently. His last surviving parent..someone that has been with him throughout his career till now. And from many accounts, they share a deep bond.
Different situation from his dad passing.

That is the problem with Ronaldo. We simply HAVE TO feed him. This means others sacrificing their game for him. When he was younger and more mobile, it did not matter that the likes of Rooney and Benzema were shackled because of him because of his output. But now he is a liability.

I’m not sure he’s a liability as such.

It massively depends on the set up behind him, which we simply didn’t have last season. We have also never kept the ball well enough.

Both of which I expect to change this season

So we’ve brought in an up and coming manager on the strength of his having extremely strong ideas about how the game should be played, and force him to completely abandon those ideas in order to accommodate a 37 year old stopgap striker?

Now this I absolutely agree with; the evidence was there last season when he suddenly started banging them in once we were out of all the cups.

Is he going to accept that though? Perhaps (very much perhaps) his realisation that there aren’t loads of clubs queuing up to sign him will make him realise his limits. Let’s hope so.

Where did I say he needs to abandon his ideas??

I’m intrigued

Is anyone else concerned Ronaldo staying could end quite badly for us? The only reason Ronaldo will be here is because nobody else wants him - right off the bat that feels dodgy. Then there's the fact that he basically has to start every game unless we want public questioning of ten Hag if we aren't performing well or getting consistent results. But at the same time, Ronaldo starting every game will surely impact how well ten Hag is able to implement a game plan of his own ideals. He wants every player on the pitch working hard for each other and Ronaldo at 37/38 just isn't going to be able to do that playing in the PL.

If ten Hag doesn't get off to a really solid start and if Ronaldo is a glaring mismatch, there's no way it ends well.

Er…
We need to make sure that ETH and his set-up/tactics get the ball to Ronaldo in the right place.

IF we can create a system/set-up that allows Ronaldo to just be in the box at the right time, it COULD be sensational.
That sounds pretty much like “building the team around” him to me.

ETH needs to stick to his principles and if that means Ronaldo on the bench then so be it. If he doesn't accept it and behaves like a child then he should be left out of the squad completely. The only reason he's still here is because nobody wants him.

Yeah, fair enough but unfortunately it’s not what I meant at all.

I literally wrote ‘his tactics’ when referring to ETH, which I would take as meaning the opposite of abandoning anything.

Not to massage data but interpret what the data tells by considering the transitions in a game.
Ok so what do the timing of Lewa’s 3 and Benzema’s 4ish extra sprint tell us? I certainly can’t tell.

Also pressing is a team thing. Not saying Ronaldo’s good at it but neither are the rest of our forwards. We didn’t suddenly develop this problem when he signed but of course the anti Ronnie club all blamed him.

Compare that to someone like Jota and the difference is night and day:

I'm certain it won't end well. It's the worst outcome him staying simply because no one wants him.

Very good point, I agree!

Ronaldo played the supporting manager role when Portugal were in the Euro Final. All be it just for one match.

But if he could bring his ego back down to earth and accept a role of mentor and not automatic starter, then he would be very valuable to any squad.

His current self of whingeing every time he is subbed and disappearing to Portugal when he isn’t starting is no use to anyone.

Huge disadvantage to not be prt of our pre season
Commercially maybe but that's about it. He's as fit as anyone and not as if he is someone who needs to adapt to a new manager style, he is going to play his way regardless and I'm sure Ten Hag has accounted for this if he is in his plans.

Which isn’t a massive problem as long as he isn’t expecting to play every minute of every game.

he needs to adapt more than any player in the squad, or should come back to Carrington to find his locker already emptied

I guess his argument would be that he was still the top scorer by a mile, and that in the games he didn't play the rest of the forwards didn't exactly lay claim to the position, so why should he be benched? Can Rashford and Bruno's relatively poor tallies be linked to Ronaldo's arrival? Bruno I think possibly, Rashford had been out of form since his shoulder.

I still think this is an unwanted distraction at a time we could have done without it. If selling him enables us to bring in a forward who suits ETH's style better then I'm all for it.

It's a World Cup year and he's a professional.

No way he downs tools.
Ronaldo could miss every single game from now until the World Cup and still be picked, assuming he declared himself as fit and ready to play for Portugal.

He's also got no reason to down tools - he sounded out other clubs and they weren't interested. The issue is whether or not it's a functional dynamic with him publicly wanting out and only being here because no one else wanted him. Not only that, but his insistence on starting and playing practically every game or risk upsetting him and consequently jetting off to Portugal (and the inevitable shit storm in the media that would obviously follow).

It just feels extremely risky given the mammoth task ten Hag already has on his hands. It's already a bad start with him not joining for preseason.

Thankfully he is a model pro and won`t leave us in the shit at the last minute if another club comes in for him.

Reality is smacking him like a brick to the face , none of the big boys sre interested and he considers himself too big for the CL clubs who'd want him.

His only options are looking like either he fecks off back to Sporting for a romantic return and end (highly unlikely given his wages and drop off in media coverage that would come) or he'll stick around for another season

Mate once again you’re talking absolute bollocks. His linkup play was piss poor. More like non-existent. And I doubt he came anywhere near 80 touches in any match last season, never mind this supposed KdB impression you claim you saw. Which no one else did. Because it didn’t happen.
If you look at his game against Brentford last season, he has made 77 pass, with 91.9% completion rate, and 1 key pass too. That’s the game I was talking about.

The game where he link up well with Cavani, that was against Spur, where he has good assist to Cavani.

Getting extremely embarrassing for him at the moment

Would accept a move to Sporting Lisbon purely to look to try and extend his CL goal scoring record.

Let’s face it, it’s not like he needs the money that only PSG et al could offer.

I always found it funny how some viewed this moment as if he was some great leader when he was clearly just trying to make a show of himself because he can't stand not having the limelight on him and he couldn't play the biggest game of his international career.

He is insufferable as a teammate.

Sure thing mate. It's all the big bad media:lol: Whatever helps you sleep at night.
All the other links are believable of course, but the PSG one is a total joke. Anyone with the IQ of a dog would know that Ronaldo and Messi will never want to play in one team.

Ahhh of course, forgot that you played countless games with him. What position did you play? Right bench?
