Cristiano Ronaldo (I stay)

The only reason Ronaldo will be here is because nobody else wants him
Imagine the rage being felt by Ronaldo ... For 2 consecutive seasons, no title-winning team thinks he is worth it. He'll be super-motivated now. Angry Ronaldo is scary Goatnaldo !

A lot of people in this thread are just going to have to grin and bear it as they celebrate his 25-30 goals next season if he stays.

Him staying let's us focus on other urgent needs this window while affording us and extra season to work diligently on finding a suitable replacement next summer.

It's only a loss if he decides to be toxic upon return and doesn't follow instruction. History has shown that he'll be a professional though once the real matches begin as he'll be motivated to show that he's still got it.

As much as I think it'd be better if he were sold to provide ETH a real blank slate and get rid of any potential circus, him staying wouldn't be a disaster. He'll likely score goals for fun when he's healthy under the new manager's system.

A marriage of convenience for the club and him could benefit both sides if he's willing to make it work.

Just can't imagine Ronaldo doing push-ups after his team concedes in training

Only thing I can't get my around is making it public he wants to leave without assurances from clubs to do so. What kind of gamble is that to take?

Mendes met with representatives from Bayern and Todd Boehly prior to going public with Ronaldo's desire to leave, so presumably they gave Mendes some encouragement that a deal could be possible (pending approval from their head coaches).

I can only assume that neither Nagalsmann nor Tuchel were particularly keen when presented with the deal and therefore subsequently Bayern and Chelsea went cold, leaving Mendes/Ronaldo without a viable option, aside from grovelling at the feet of Arnold/Ten Hag.

So now he stays.

This thing about him being away for so long due to family issues makes little sense. Ronaldo played immediately after his father died and after he lost his new born. So what could make him stay away that long given how professional he is supposed to be?

The probable truth is that he does have a family issue and has been using it as an excuse to keep away while his agent was whoring him around Europe. Otherwise I'm sure he would already have returned.
Those instances happened during the course of a season. This is pre season and hardly important.

You don’t know if their are other family issues he is dealing with and it’s nobodies job to tell anybody else’s how they should cope or feel.

IF the personal reasons are true then a lot of people in here will look very stupid for attacking someone who is coping.

If your going to hate him jusr wait until things get explained first before assuming. We all know what happens when people assume.

If the rumors are true then so be it. He has done a lot for United and is 37. God forbid he wants to spend his last couple years at the top level competing for a big trophy. United are rebuilding anyways and will not be competing for any trophy this season to be begin with so Having Ronaldo or not having him won’t make a difference this year.

If he stays then you keep a club legend and probably win a few more games (if ETH is as good as advertised and signings are made). All this crying for no reason.

Qualify for the Champions League and then deny him the extra year extension. I’m down for that fairytale ending

He is going to stay because nobody wants him at this point. Unfortunately he's a "can't bench" player. We'd be better off getting rid, but i don't see it.

The dream scenario is one where he accepts being a rotation player, impact sub etc. That way we have some attacking depth, but as a starter? Not better than just running with Rashford/martial/Sancho as a starting 3.

Strategically, as in exit strategy, surely you get something sealed before you make such a damaging announcement?

I'm sure people will tolerate him if/when he stays, but it's such a needless thing to have been so premature about.

We had an early sight of what we need from a striker in this system, and it ain't gonna be Ronaldo doing the dirty bits. So it's going to be interesting to see how he's dealt with if he stays, and who he goes to if he's shipped off.

Martial had to work thrice as hard as usual to stay relevant in the first half, Ronaldo's going to be a passenger when we defend.

He's done more for Real Madrid and he's been paid handsomely by us. We don't owe him anything.

You can't make such an assumption because it doesn't have to be anything to do with his own constitution. He has kids, a wife and a mother who one would presume are his nearest and dearest; if any of them are suffering, everything outside the circle is put on hold...

Also, I'm not trying to convince you. If you see how CR behaves during games, and you think you'd be good with it as a teammate, with such gems as, “I don’t mean that Jese, Lucas and Kovacic are not good, but if everyone was at my level, maybe we’d be leaders.”,
He didn’t say this. And he was talking about his physical level because Madrid had a ton of injuries at that time to key players. He just meant if everyone was able to keep fit rather than the actual quality of the players.

Reliable source confirming that Mendes was whoring him out to PSG to no avail

They did say after signing Campos that they were moving away from 'Hollywood' signings and their signings and targets so far this summer have been evidence of that

PSG looked a non-starter from the get go. They have Messi and the only reason they'd bring in Ronaldo would be for silly commercial reasons rather than football ones.

It's looking like Sporting, maybe Chelsea (unlikely) or he comes crawling back to us for one last season.

The good thing with clubs rejecting Ronaldo is it puts Ten Hag and the club in a stronger position to bench him this season, if he stays he needs to shut up, put the team first or get benched.

No way he goes to Sporting. That's his career at the top over.

Next summer he is a free agent thus easier for him to choose a club + has the option of staying at United if we qualify for the UCL and are making progress.

He was a key player in your last CL win and in your premier league dominance from 2006-09. So much so that he won a Balon D or their.

But ya I guess he didn’t do much.

Keep seeing this. He isn't a club legend, he's very publicly tried to engineer a move away, twice.

I feel like being a legend is more than just being a great player. Figo is one of the best to ever play for Barcelona, he most certainly isn't a legend there. Ronaldo is a Real Madrid Legend and a football legend. but When you look back on his career it will not be remembered for his time at United.

I hope he goes, He clearly isn't arsed where he goes as long as it's in the champions league. Sell him to Frankfurt. If he stays he accepts a bench Role. mainly due to age and him not having had a Pre Season :smirk:

I am sure PSG don't want him but Julien Laurens is less reliable about transfer news than my 15 year old who was convinced we would sign Haaland.

How EtH reintroduces him into the squad will be a big test for him. Especially if martial, Sancho and Rashford get a good understanding together in the pre season.

Been thinking about it. Could be damaging if he just walks in while those three are playing well.

Hilarious really. No one wants him. Should come crawling back rather than wait for the club to roll out the red carpet.

Think he should just go to Sporting and get it over with.

To be fair he is doing his usual which is to open a french paper and translate what he sees for the english public. The story actually comes from Le Parisien who have surprisingly been clued up since May, their source is seemingly back.

I think EtH will give it him straight - along the lines of you’re not a guaranteed starter. I’m impressed with what I’ve seen from the lads so far in your absence. Fight for your place or you might only get one game in three.

It will be interesting to see how EtH fits him into the team and tactics (eg. pressing) if he is not sold.
I'd imagine he planned for him to be here 1 more year anyway - this is a project for him. We're not going to win the league so it's not like we have to have our best possible XI this September all ready to go, this will take multiple summer windows, but there's no reason a possession heavy team can't have one player who doesn't press as a central striker.

It's a very precarious situation all round really. For reasons others mentioned regarding team harmony - if Martial gets shafted again for another big name, we really will have lost even the remote hope he can come good - as well as his ego and powers of influence on and off the pitch plus the notion of him grafting in a World Cup year, where he'll be saving his legs for a last hurrah... on top of that, him not accepting rotation or being a sub...

It's a potential minefield, for sure. I think he'll want to exit mainstream football on his own terms - if he ever goes back to Sporting as a player, it'll be when he's absolutely done, and accepts it, not whilst he's still able to hit 20-35 goals a season at the top level.

ten Hag looks like a perceptive guy, so I hope he has contingencies and plans in place no matter which avenue things go down. He really doesn't need a circus during his debut season.

I just think the time we tolerate this kind of behaviour from players should be over. Ship him out and draw a line in the sand. With regards to Martial, I would want competition for him, it's not likely we'd go out and buy an 80-100m forward anyway. But a prospect who fits the profile of player we need would be sensible.

Whether or not Ronaldo wants to go to club a, b, or c is irrelevant. He's dragged the club through the mud and his agent has been trying to whore him out to all the usual suspects but no takers. Well, tough shit. But it should have consequences. I guess the only reason he's not booted out of the club now is because of commercial value. The bare minimum should be that he's no longer some untouchable and if he has a strop when he's subbed off that he's told in no uncertain terms to shut his fecking mouth.
