I actually didn't think he played that badly before the goal and was trying to press but it was completely uncoordinated with the other forwards who seemed to do it on and off. I could see him pressing and then waving at the others to follow his example, which they often weren't.

Ridiculous how much he's carried us through to the group stages but then this is his competition. You can't expect him to play in the Europa League, it'd be a crime ;)

This season I have seen him get frustrated with teammates. It looks like they don't understand the plays he's trying to build or his movement so taking that into consideration, he's having a really good season.

I think we will finish outside of the top four but if we win this year's champions league, he wouldn't need to play in Europa

SOLSKJAER! POCHETTINO! RONALDO! | One-2-One with Simon Jordan | Season 2 Episode 13

I can't post videos here yet but if anyone cares please take a look, just go to youtube and search the above title. I don't agree/like Simon a lot but I admit he does have a high intelligence in the game.
And he also says that Ronaldo, as much as a wonderful player he is, is not going to improve the team and in a certain way undone United's project of becoming a high tempo team.

In my opinion, the only real reason he is a problem in the team is due to the fact he needs to start every game. He should not show any resent when he comes off the bench as he did in the Everton game.
He would be a fascinating player if the manager had the power to manage his game time and control his ego.

Not that I want to drop Ronaldo, far from it, play as many games as humanly possible, we'd be out of the UCL if it weren't for him, but these are some interesting stats

Too small a sample. I mean, the four games without him include the 5-1 win against Leeds and a totally lucky win against Wolves.

It is a little unfair because in the 8 games, it includes the Liverpool game and the City game. However, considering Ronaldo did almost nothing in the two games it does somewhat tell you something

Stats so meaningless you've got me posting a #LUHG Tweet.

That sample is ridiculously small.

Surprised more was not made of his work rate last night. I thought he worked his socks off chasing lost causes and looked a bit tired towards the end, although a knackered run at their goalkeeper actually was part of what caused the goal (massive credit to Fred btw). As I said before, he tried to press but it just wasn't coordinated with martial, who to be fair, also tried to press but it never seemed in tandem with everyone else.

Not sure what it is interesting about.

I mean if you are a United fan, you know exactly what is going on this season.

I wonder if you're Ronaldo are you worried about the Rangnick appointment...
Yes, worried about having the most wonderful manager in recent years. Worried about scoring the most goals in recent years because the team around you will run their arses off for you to do what you do best. Worried about scoring match winners. Worried about enjoying football again. Worried about working for a winner again. Worried about being apart of a disciplined setup again.

Hes worried about all of that.

Hell no, proper coaching and a style of play? he will be licking his lips.

Hope ye are right ! Do you think he might be worried about the amount he'll be expected to run though?

Is this the thread for all things Ronaldo? I mean, the thread title is clear, but I don't wanna create a new thread for this. Juventus' and Amazon's All or Nothing just came out, and as a big fan this for me could be the best insight on how this man acts behind cameras. I'd like to get some discussion going if you guys find the content cool to analyse as well for midweek when there's no games. First tidbit I could find online was the halftime dressing room vs Porto in the Champions league, where Juve ended up being eliminated. Title is clickbaity but it was the best video I could find:

Translation by me, as good as I can:

- Ronaldo: "We play like "s**t!"
- Someone: "We will pick things up"
- Ronaldo: "Like s**t!"
- Cuadrado: "Calm down."
- Ronaldo: "F**k! We play so badly, including me."
- Cuadrado: "You need to be an example to everyone!"
- Ronaldo: "I play like s**t too! We are playing absolutely zero, we have to get real here, it's the truth. This is a CL game, we must have personality"
- Pirlo: "Enough, c'mon! That's enough Cris, and enough Juan [Cuadrado]!"

He was fuming.

Ronaldo isn't lazy as such. Based on this season, you wouldn't fancy him as a presser - but that's about system/instructions much more than the basic ability to do it. He has more sprints per ninety than many attackers who are much younger than him (famously, he outclasses Lukaku in that regard).

Ronaldo crying after Porto game. He’s a born winner that will never accept defeat.

It will be interesting to see how CR and RR adopt to each other.

It’s must be so hard for someone who has been the best in the world for so long, but not realising he is not the same player he use to be.

He will need professional help soon to get over this.

I don't know anything about this new manager.

What exactly is gegenpressing?

Does it work if one player does 50% less?

Pogba and Martial look already gone, Ronaldo is legend material but this could be a bit like the Schalke thing where he was getting rid of a club legend too and then got sacked because of it or something.

It will be interesting to see how CR and RR adopt to each other.

Very. A manager known for high intensity pressing versus the attacker who presses least in the league.

Either Rangnick adjusts and finds a way of essentially hiding Ronaldo tactically or Ronaldo could be looking at more time on the bench.

Liverpool's style of play, so yeah Ronaldo could struggle (that'll be music to your ears)

It will be tears to yours.

You really think I hate Ronaldo don't you? My lord.

I guess everyone who complains on player performances actually hates the player.

Literally look at how I speak about Ronaldo vs Messi. I adore him but believe he has positives and negatives at the age of 37.

Doubt it.

It seems that RR and United have a clear understanding regarding his mandate (he apparently rejected the initial contract offer in order to insist on being allowed to carry out a "project" at United).

If he wants to drop Ronaldo, that's what will happen. It would be absurd to hire him in what is essentially a "saviour" role from the board's perspective, and then undermine his authority by meddling in who he picks/drops.

Imagine they’ll just get Ronaldo to focus on blocking passing lanes as opposed to chasing down the ball.

Wow. I'm actually trying to get the free Amazon trial just to watch the Juventus series but damn, this one even hits me. How can you not love this guy? He's won everything a footballer can achieve, bar the World Cup. He's won 5 CLs and he cries like a baby when he gets eliminated. As someone said above, he had a stinker of a game that night, but regardless of whether he gets eliminated playing well or not, regardless of whether he's 19 and losing an Euro final, or 37 and being eliminated in a competition he's won 5 times, the passion is real, and one of the reasons I love him so much. He is the perfect guy to have in a squad. Huge standards, incredible passion, and willingness to improve every day no matter his age and how much he's won.

If he wants to drop Ronaldo he will be on a plane back to Russia before kick off.

Let's not kid ourselves. He is coming as an interim manager not a permanent manager with a long game plan.

His job is to settle the squad and get them moving in the right direction and in a decent place for the permanent manager to take over.

He will have been made aware that this is not all about him

Hopefully Rangnick chooses CR7 as his captain. New managers normally choose their own captain to show a reset and things are new and Maguire is struggling with the captaincy anyway.

i think Ronaldo will get on really well with the new manager. Rangnick will respect Ronny as the GOAT and a club legend and try to get him on side.. which giving him the captaincy will be a good way to start to buy into what he wants.

Rangnick knows Ronny is 37 and isn't capable of high-pressing so will probably operate a mid-press from the midfield instead to compensate for Ronaldo, but with Ronny keeping the shape.

I think the media suggesting that Rangnick will come in and ruthlessly drop and dump Ronny out of the club like he's some nobody is ridiculous and really disrespectful.. without Ronny this season we would've finished bottom of our Champions League group and be further away in the Premier League. You don't treat a club legend with such disrespect.. not what Ronny has done for this club over 2 spells. Whatever happens and when it's time for Ronny to leave/retire (hopefully not for a long time yet as on his current form can easily play into his 40s for this club).. Ronny has earned the right to leave through the front door with his head held high when he does eventually leave/retire. Stay classy.

It really makes me angry and sad to see such disrespect to a club legend... who lets not forget rejected joining Manchester City to come back to Manchester United where he's supposed to be loved and appreciated/respected..

Cristiano is likely to have less playing time under Ralf but contribute whole lot more to the team. It won't be easy for tiring opposition defenders to deal with Cristiano coming in for half an hour and giving his all for those 30 minutes. Will help him prolong his career as well.

He's being hired for two years beyond the interim thing (as a consultant) - precisely because he has a long-term plan.

If he concludes that Ronaldo starting all the time is detrimental, it seems incredibly unlikely that United will refuse to listen to him.

(If that happens, there really is no hope for us, I would add).

Rangnick is probably one of the best minds in modern football. This guy is also very serious and always demands full controls of the football matters wherever he works. He's quite ruthless based on what I've heard of him. And he could be considered the originator of the gegen pressing approach with considerable influence on Tuchel, Julian Nagelsmann, Ralph Hasenhuttl and Jurgen Klopp.

So, his team gonna presses, that's I'm pretty sure about. I'm actually very looking forward to that, finally someone with a modern approach.

For Ronaldo some may think he won't fit well with Rangnick because of this. And it's probably the case I think and Rangnick will bench him for some matches. But imo it's actually a blessing in disguise for both, the team and Ronaldo. We'll play better football and Ronaldo also needs to be managed properly to have a longer career at the top level. He'll be 37 yo very soon.

I’ve watched a video last night explain how Rangnick would apply his high pressing system in our current team. Basically Ronaldo and our other forwards would probably adopt the role of man marking a defender each to prevent a passing there, which would leave opponents to pass the ball to their only option to their nearest midfielder, and that’s where our intense pressing would occur once the ball get to their midfielder. I thought it makes perfect sense, instead of asking our forward to chase the ball crazily like a headless chicken in the final third.

This. I do not believe that he will ever have been appointed without the Ronaldo situation not being brought up. Ronaldo so far is the only one salvaging our season. He doesn't need to press like a mindless animal, just give him the Madrid role. Cut the passing lanes to the defenders and let him score goals. In gegenpressing, as @RedRonaldo said, most of the pressure comes from the midfielders and fullbacks anyway. And I think we can see a new Fred here. McTominay is toast, hopefully replaced by VDB.

I think the best thing for Ronaldo is that apparently Rangnick plays 2 upfront in a lot of his tactics.

This should stop the front 3 imbalance and give Ronaldo the aspect to line up with a striker partner.

When Ronaldo does this, he can focus on being in one area and blocking the passing lanes of the RB and RCB just by standing in the right positions - whilst the RF can stop the passing lanes of the LB and LCB.

Don't worry. Opposition managers who have done well against us have come out to praise Ronaldo and allude that our problems lay elsewhere. I'd take their expert opinions over pundits and some in the fanbase. He's not the big problem that some are claiming. At least not yet.
