Cricket

Yeah but let’s not blame the weather for that :p
Haha. Need to leave this place though. The other day I made the mistake of going out for 5 minutes to talk on the phone and lost my voice.

Can't imagine players playing an professional game here. Basically suicidal.

We've dropped Matthews 5 times in one innings! 5 times!

Kohli scored his first double hindered in July 2016, now he has scored 6. Incredible consistency.

I’m guessing it’s windy like hell in HP this time of the year. Going to be worse later on.

Doesn’t excuse the fact that we still need MS to bail us out.

I wonder sometimes why WI even bother to do test series anymore. For the most part all we do these days is stat pad for other teams. Sigh.

Why do they play up north so late in the year? Doesnt make any sense.

Think it’s about quotas. Each State has a game that it needs to be given. They try allotting such useless games to obscure places like kochi, guwahati and all do that the big series can have games in the better stadiums like wankhede and bengaluru and all

Yeah, still bemuses me that they couldn't have played in Dharamsala in the Australia series.

Ricky ponting has to be the best fielder ever right? Better than Jonty Rhodes for me

Ponting was very good, but certainly not the best. Andrew Symonds was better, and that's just in his own team.

fecking ridiculous batting. Just look at the highlights of this one.

fecking hell Rohit!! To do it once is special, but 3 times!!

But can he do it on a cold wet night in Stoke?

No. Match will be called off due to rain then
Pitch can be wet, despite it not raining!
Actually there have been instances where the match was played just after rain iirc- I think India vs England in 2003 WC, where Nehra got 6/23 was one such match:p

Going back a few years, two of the best fielders I remember growing up were Colin Bland and Clive Lloyd. Both are often forgotten when prowess in the field is being considered. Derek Randall was another good one.

I'm not sure how Stoneman has managed to survive so far.

That’s what you get if you literally never play (a competitive opposition) outside India. After the tour to Australia in late 2014, India has only visited West Indies, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka and have played every test nation, including the 3 mentioned before, at home.

(Slightly digressing here...) I don’t even get why they have to play so many tests here in India, there is literally zero enthusiasm and interest shown by the general public to watch those games in the stadiums. The least the BCCI can do is look into the matter of making test matches in India a more fun experience for viewers of all ages.

Hardly there fault. I think outside of Asia only Australia & England have any appetite/capability of big long tours, but there's only so many times India can play them. 2 out of the 4 slots are always taken up by an Ashes series, and India hosted both of them in 2016/17.

Could’ve easily played South Africa and New Zealand away to be honest. Even though Kohli is well on his way to becoming one of the greatest ever batsmen (at least in ODIs), i still take the current stats with a pinch of salt.

And not just his stats but those of others like KL Rahul and Pujara - who plain and simply are not among the Top 10 test batsmen in the world but they are on that list because of the crazy amount of runs they’ve amassed in this period.

Not sure what you're getting at? Pitches in England and Australia are flat as feck. Forgot the last time Kohli was in Australia?

In fact, in all these recent home series', most of the pitches have made to turn a lot, anyway.

Why have you included Pujara? Hes definitely in the top 5. Right after Kohli, Smith, Williamson and Root.

Some of them are infact flat, but not outright dead. A turning pitch aids Indian batsmen more than it hurts them- this might be one of the most overused lines in Cricket but it is true.

I do remember what happened the last time in Australia. But I’d bet top dollar on him not replicating the kind of scores he has in the last two years. Don’t get me wrong, he’s an amazing player - out of the current lot him and Smith are on a completely different level, but i just would like to see India play abroad more.

You should probably check how many runs/centuries he’s made outside the Indian subcontinent. Not trying to impose my opinion here, but i just don’t see anything special in him. I’d rather see players like Iyer and Pant (albeit too early for him now) being given a chance.

Whilst Indian pitches aid the spinners, who do the pitches in Aus, Eng and, even, NZ aid? I remember when Perth used to be like heaven for the faat bowlers. Nowadays, its no different to Sydney, Adelaide or the MCG. Same can be said of Lords, The Oval, Auckland, Wellington, Hamilton and the rest.

As for the point on Pujara, Ill have to check his stats. He was good in SA, NZ but cant remember the others.

Pujara averages

33 in Aus
22 in Eng
15 in NZ
44 in SA
62 in Ind
90 in SL

Most pitches abroad (Australia, SA, NZ, England) at least have truer bounce, which give the pace bowlers something extra to exploit and it definitely adds more lethality to other important aspects like off-the-seam movement, swing, natural variations and help from the pitch itself. Not to mention that the bounce helps the spinners as well.
Perth has changed a bit over the years but I don’t agree with your claim that it’s the same as the SCG.

P.S. - Of Pujara’s 14 centuries only one was scored outside the Indian subcontinent.

How have India played so many home games over the past 18 months? Its like 4 different series' all at home. Do they have a long abroad schedule coming up?

Yeah they're touring SA in December-Jan, then England in the English summer.

FWIW Indian home test season is during October - February, same time as the South African, Australian & New Zealand. Only England host home tours from May to September.
