Cricket

There're no real good guys of Pakistani cricket unfortunately. :( Even Imran Khan was known to use bottle caps, etc.

My personal favourite, Saeed Anwar (of the legend for holding the highest recorded one day individual score for many years), grew a large religious beard and then was shocked to be later implicated in match fixing himself. Shocked that he was outed, not shocked that he partook obviously.
He grew the beard after his daughter died, must have found solace in Allah somewhere along the road. But he was also a main cog in the corrupt Pakistan teams of the 90's.

In terms of Pakistani match fixing, there's not many people who have not seen or been involved with it pre-2010. I remember reading an article in Jang that said the only reason Misbah was kept out of the team for so long was due to him having a very poor relationship with Inzamam and that maybe he knew something about the player that many suspected but never proved.

As for Amir, he was a very young man who was pressured by his then captain and the most senior bowler in the team. He made a mistake but given his age and status in the team can be forgiven and has served his time in prison and a ban from cricket.

@shabz agreed. Rashid Latif wrote all about match fixing directly naming players (Moin, Wasim, etc) and a lawyer was going to take this testimony all the way to the top.

To my surprise all the way to the top was as corrupt. And I don't just mean the whole PCB. My conspiracy theory takes me to the ICC. Hansie Cronje, etc, didn't do anything to change that view.

Amir is this decade's Ata ur Rahman. He too was a wonderful bowler but was screwed for not complying. Hopefully Amir can salvage something of his career.

Asif was a wonderful bowler too. IIRC he already had disciplinary problems but not related to fixing

He was brilliant when he bothered to actually play & not feck around by cheating/being arrested for drugs/being lazy. I remember him dominating KP back around 2006 when Pietersen was virtually unplayable.

I've seen Asif on a few occasions over the last couple of years (spends his summers in Oslo for some reason). He seems confident about a return to international cricket, says he still has 2-3 years in him. He was never express pace so I guess he can keep going until he is 35-36.

Apparently Misbah was kept out of the team because he was too 'liberal' for Inzamam's liking and not religious enough. If you remember the Inzi period of captaincy, the team was preaching and openly praying whilst on tours.

Ridiculous reason to keep someone out of the team.

Latif said last year when Moin was head coach that he'd always represented Pakistan sincerely. Shocked me, as I always thought he was part of the 90's crew.

Also, Ata Ur Rahman wasn't really a wonderful bowler, he was just your usual seam up bowler, hence why he became the fall guy.

Probably the best bowler I've seen come out of Pakistan, right up there next to Wasim/Waqar.

Shame he was such a dick of a man.

Steroids, fighting team mates, contraband use and then the spot fixing.

I hope he never plays for Pakistan again.

Was Ata ur Rehman rated highly in Pak? @Dumbstar
I remember him as a very mediocre bowler and distinctly remember this game when he was smashed all around.

Conceding 85 runs in 10 overs was big deal back then. Then onwards in my friend circle, while playing cricket, anyone having a shit bowling day and conceding a lot was used to be called Ata ur Rehman for few days till somebody else conceded big and the honour of being Ata ur Rehman was passed on :D

Interesting. Ata came with a high ceiling but obviously never realised as he was pushed out early for not partaking in the widespread corruption.

Certainly had the talent. I used to remember calling shit footballer friends Ronaldo for a while before that became abundantly not appropriate any longer. :)

Ata ur and Aqib Javed could have been our future if not for the overstaying Wasim and returning Waqar.

Stayed up late into the night to watch Lara's inning. If I am not mistaken this was the third test of the series and Lara had scored an equally masterful double hundred in the second test.
Yup. Series ended 2-2. It was an amazing series. It was a time when WI were still relevant at home and one could relate at least in some proportion when the previous generation used to describe tales of the great WI in years gone by.

Yeah. An amazing roller coaster of a series with Australia pawning WI in the first test and Lara winning the next two for WI with Australia winning the last.

Thanks for sharing this.. Good to see that KP innings mentioned.. Was one of the best innings against spin bowling by a player not from the subcontinent that I have seen.. That Sachin innings in Chennai against pak would have been in that list had we won the match..

I think that KP innings is over-rated. I think Cook played equally well in that match and in the previous one too

The Indian bowling back then had this criminal habit of absolutely buckling once a bit of pressure was on. It stil does, but even Ashwin and Ojha used to be like that back then.

The moment a good batsman puts up a bit of a fight, they'd fold.

I think whats good about the KP innings in that game was the sheer audacity of it. It wasn't impossible to bat on, but you had to play properly. Pujara ground his way to 130 odd off a million balls (despite the noticeable advantage of batting first) and Cook's innings was in the same vein. Attritional, sensible batting, and patience.

KP came out with England typically 2 down for feck all and about 250 runs behind in the game and just said 'feck this, I'm not being bowled to' and just played shots he had absolutely no right to play on that pitch over and over again.

Cook had a better series and played a good knock too, but it was not in the same league as that KP innings which is, to this day, the best knock I've ever seen by an England batsman (I'm not sure yet if Stokes' knock yesterday breaks into my top 3 which is all KP atm).

Man this pisses me off so much.

You bowl a team out for 31. A team made up of 14 year olds playing the game for the first time because the u16 team had exams

You then let only 5 kids bat and you let one of them rack up fecking 1000*.

Let him score a century, sure, but jesus fecking christ his coach should never be allowed to coach kids cricket again. Clearly has no idea that his job is to encourage kids to play the game not get his name in the news because some lad smashed around a bunch of kids.

Just ridiculous

The team he was playing against ffs:

Time for Amir's eagerly anticipated comeback. Will he hit the ground running? How will he react to the crowd abuse and the sledging on the field? Can't wait!

He should bowl a no-ball to start things off ;)

Looking forward to his return. Will be a lot of focus & pressure but I think he'll do fine. Still only 23!

We also need to get into some form in T20s with the WC coming up.

Surely Maqsood is amongst top 3 worst ever batsmen with 25+ games. No talent or ability.

Anything below 185 will be easy pickings for NZ.

Even 170 should be defendable considering our bowling.

Really excited to see how Amir performs. Him and Riaz together should be a treat.

What a waste. Should really have been 190 with Afridi and Akmal going well but once again no one takes the responsibility to bat through the innings.

Gul getting absolutely murdered here.

I remember in the 2009 T20 win he was able to bowl 6 yorkers in a row. What happened? Useless bowler now and hasn't performed for a long time, no idea why he's in the team.

Afridi also showing his bad leadership here - putting himself into the attack when Imad and Amir have been bowling well.

If you're going to lead from the front, don't drop an absolute dolly of a catch, mate.
