That simply isn't true. At grass roots level English football is 3rd world country. Cricket has a far better set up, probably because it's expensive to play and it's run by posh people with lots of dosh.

The counties are struggling financially, though.
1996 (as I presume you already know...). God knows how we won that - we were a shambles for most of the 90's.

After being humilated for decades by Australia and the Windies, white washed 5-0 on many an ocassion, India's recent record against England looks a little pathetic to be honest.

Those puny 1-0 victories and another 2 draws in a series? The Windies used to do us over 5-0 home & away. Now they were really good.
So in short we have established
1) England have not won a test series against India since 1996
2) England even with imperial power behind them could not win a single WC or establish themselves as dominant force.
3) England have retorted to stealing other countries' players to finally make a mark in international cricket since Englishmen were just not good enough.

Show me where anyone said we are as good as the great Windies team or Oz of the last decade. We are the best team in the world right now but not in contention for best ever or even close.
Fact is you have failed to beat even some of our weakest teams since 1996. Embarrassing.
Those WIndies and Aussies side were exceptional, kinda like the Barcelona of Cricket. We aren't close to that, however we've earned to be the No.1 team right now.

For me, cricket is Windies playing at the peak of their powers during the 70s and 80s. Such a shame we've lost them as a cricketing power house.
Cricket is about that though, that's where the game came from. I'm sure you wouldn't deny Sumo is Japanese and Baseball is American?
