Cricket: ICC World Twenty20 tournament Sept 2007 in South Africa

That's my biggest worry. Why do you hate the 50 over game so much? I know many cricketing purists who enjoy both forms of the game; I think it's good to have variation in cricket.

Well, it's not cricket, really. I find it boring as well. . . most of the games have the same pattern. This 20/20 doesn't pretend to be anything other than a quick slog. Let it generate the cash from now on, which I think it will.

Our country scene has been dead for 2 and a half decades. Back in the old days Lancs used to pull in over 20,000 regularly.

And I don't get that though. The game is a religion in those parts(Asia), regardless of one day cricket.

Biggest shame over the last decade and a half has been the demise of Windies cricket.

Indian zonal Cricket is going pretty much the same way as our County scene. Pakistan needs a complete overhaul of their structure. International Cricketers hardly ever play domestic Cricket anymore in those parts of the World, less so than here.

Where do you guys see cricket heading in the next ten or twenty years?

It's in terminal decline

We've seen it in the WI, I reckon England is next.

I remember as kids we always had a bat and tennis bowl with us during the Summer and as we approached 14/15 we could not wait for weekends to play competitive games. I see no similar pattern with kids these days.

I'm not sure about that. Windies cricket died out due to influence of American sports. Namely basketball. . .whereas the game here still generates huge interest, in both forms of the game. I reckon 20/20 could actually attract kids to the game, but it's up to schools to promote cricket.

The decline in popularity is alarming over here as well. It's got to the stage that on a particular day a test match here might fetch fifty people if lucky. It's saddening because growing up cricket was simply what defined summer for me; BYC in the backyard with my dad and siblings, lying on the couch on a hot summers afternoon sitting back and just watching cricket, going down to Wellington to watch the ODI's, going to school with the transistor and listening to the cricket via a earphone during schooltime, lunch time cricket with one hand one bounce.. I miss those days :(

That is the affect of One Day cricket, Kiwi. Only Australia and England buck the trend.

I've heard quite a few commentators suggest that only basketball has any sort of foothold in the Carribean, and that it's not so much 'American Sports' that are to blame but it's actually far more to do with the increasing popularity of Premier League football.

I didn't know that. I do recall Ambrose saying that cricket nearly lost him to basketball. . .and that it's become very popular in the Windies. But the rot set in back in the late 80's before the PL. . . perhaps they've just moved on to football. It's fecking huge globally, which we all know. It's been a slow death but we saw it coming.

New Zealand 190 (20 overs) beat India 180-9 (20 overs) by 10 runs

Didn't watch the morning game but it sounded as if it was tight. I think India needed to win that game in order to qualify, with South Africa & England in the group it is a hard task.

Australia 124-1 (13.5 ovs) bt Bangladesh 123-8 (20 ovs) by 9 wkts

Bangladesh took it way to easy in their innings, especially compared to last evening, where they went out all guns blazing and reached 40 runs in around 3 overs.

Oh and Brett Lee got a hatrick - first one in international Twenty20 - edged behind to keeper, bowled, lbw..

England will play South Africa next in the evening match. Should be good but I expect SA to edge it.

I'm looking forward to the England game. Fancy SA to win it though, unless KP can play like he did on the tour of SA a while back.

England v SA about to start..

England won the toss and elected to bowl

India domestic scene has NEVER generated any interest whatsoever. People only care about international cricket and gate receipts don even make a difference considering more than 80 % are given to sponsors and members for free. India doesn't need T20 at all, cricket interest is never going to die here.

And I agree with KiwiRed, though Test is easily the best form of cricket. ODI still require a lot of skill, one still needs to apply himself and play a big innings as a batsman and you still get to see a lot of great spells of bowling. Only reason why I have started hating ODIs off late is due to the flat pitches.

South Africa 154-8 (20 ovs) bt England 135-7 (20 ovs) by 19 runs

As I predicted, close but SA just edged it.

Flintoff just couldn't turn the screw at the end when he needed to and the fact that SA bowled well - especially at the end closing the game out well.

Whats everyone's view on the Pietersen run-out? Looked a bit suspicious to me, not sure where Pollock was heading.

I missed little parts of the match and that was one of them!

In general i would'nt call Pollock a cheat, but i think he did tonight. Take a look at the replay and see what you make of it. I'd be interested to hear an un-biased view.

Agarkar needs to be dropped. He's not the right kind of bowler for this format. We're going to continue giving away too many runs with this bowling attack. Our batsman need to click together to win the next two matches.

Dhoni screwed up as well, Pathan only bowled two overs. Both Sreesanth and Agarkar are more wayward than him and they bowled more.

The next match will be crucial for India/England if they want to have any chance of advancing into the semi-finals from that group...

Funnily enough for India it is England on the 19th... (ENG play NZ on the 18th)

There is only one match tomorrow PAK v Sri Lanka...

For me that could well be the decider of who goes through to the semi-finals along with Australia in that group. Should be an entertaining match as well.

I bet i saw you in the stands in the Sa vs England game.

And the way the guy was dancing[like a gay],I am sure it was you.

Pakistan v Sri Lanka (1700 BST start)

TOSS - Sri Lanka win the toss and decide to field first.

Should be a good one. I fancy Sri Lanka, Pakistan need atleast 180.

I think Sri Lanka will edge it even though I want PAK to win. I just wish Shoaib Akhtar was still around Sri Lanka have a good batting line up.

Should be a good game though hopefully Asif will take a few and keep the runs down...

After being 33-3 Pakistan have recovered to 121-3. 6 overs left.

Pakistan 189-6 (20 overs) beat Sri Lanka 156-9 (20 overs) by 33 runs

I missed the latter half of the PAK innings but the partnership between Younus and Malik was the foundation for the victory.

PAK started well but then lost two wickets in two balls hitting a bit of a dry patch and losing another wicket. Then Younus and Malik came in and made a 101 partnership both reaching 50's...

The bowling was okay at the start but Sri Lanka started to get on their way but then Afridi and Gul supported well and took some key wickets whilst keeping the scores down.

It was an important match this and so long as PAK don't mess up against Bangladesh then they should follow Australia into the semi's unless there are further surprises...

England won the toss and have put the Kiwis into bat.

At the end of the first over New Zealand are 7/1. Don't know who's out, just caught the tail end of the commentary.

EDIT: It's McCullum who's gone.

Now 16/1 in the second over.

Freddie still looks off but he has just got Fulton out with a slow one.

Not too shabby a start this.

17/2

EDIT: Make that 27/3 with five gone.

According to Agnew on the BBC, Flintoff looks like a man on his way home, and that there's soem bad news expected later about the ankle. Looks in pain every time he runs up.

Three sixes in a row from Styris, now that can ruin your over very quickly.

78/4

Have you lot heard about this >> http://www.thesun.co.uk/article/0,,2007430259,00.html

The storm clouds are circling an England touring party once again. The media out there in South Africa sound like they're going to latch onto it, there has been no official reaction as yet.

Styrus is going nuts with the sixes at the moment, great stuff.

20 off the last over, Colllingwood took a right pasting there.

Got to do something or this is going to get out of hand.

EDIT: And almost as i pressed post, McMillian gone for 57. 138/6,

Actually scratch that, 138/7, Oram bowled by Maddy.
