Cricket Draft - Tests

I'll be around for the next 12 hours, so feel free to PM me too.

Varun_UTD AND KM , please PM your picks to someone. It can't be RI since he has to pick himself so NM may be.. dunno

I've already PMed it to NM.

I have PMed mine to NM

As I said previously, following rules are going to come into effect after my picks -

- 6 hour time limit for a pick (may be extended if a pick has been PMed and it has been gobbled up by someone else)
- Strongly advised to PM your pick to someone who won't pick again before you. Might be better to PM two names
- Mandatory to PM the person who is supposed to pick after you. If you can't then mention it while making your pick so someone else can.

Well none of you, MJJ or NM picked quick or messaged your choices. At this rate, it's going to take forever to complete.

There was NO POINT in me picking quickly. Everyone after me (including MJJ) was fast asleep.

I have Varun, KM and Crappy's picks.

While we wait for Australia to wake up, I was wiki-ing to see if Cricket has any equivalent of the Football Manager series in football (not that I've ever played Football manager) and I see there's something called International Cricket Captain. Has anybody ever played it?

Theoretically with the wealth of statistics available for Cricket, it should be possible to build a decent model to simulate a game. For any given ball to a batsman, you should be able to calculate the probability of what happens based on a declining level of weight attached to the record starting from most specific (THAT batsman against THAT bowler on THAT ground) to least specific (general batting average Vs. general bowling average).

Would probably be the only time I took over a few minutes. Completely forgot that I would have been gone for the evening.

Yeah fair enough gents. Not pointing fingers or anything. Just saying it would be easier if people messaged their choices. There's less clashes now since there's a large number of players around the same level.

I play it often. It isn't very good, but it is time pass. The new one has legends of the game which is fun. India is shit compared to the likes of Australia/England when you account for legends though!

 I was waiting for hours for nm to pick, went to bed at 5 am and he then goes and steals my pick.

Do they do what I was speculating about...use the historical record database to simulate results? If yes, how detailed does it get - accounting for conditions etc. or more broad? I can't make out much from the website.

Interval Level/ The Regulator - Viv Richards, Donald, Lillee; Gooch, Yousuf
The Man himself - Kallis, Walsh, Kumble, Kirsten, McDermott
Akash / manikandan nair - Botham, Waqar, Greenidge, Mushtaq, Haynes
Aldo - Warne, McGrath, Ponting, Bishop, Crowe
NM - Imran, Greg Chappell, Garner, MacGill, Inzamam
MJJ - Akram, Akhtar, Saqlain, Lee, Flintoff
Donaldol - Hadlee, Dravid, Andy Roberts,Hayden, Vettori
ghaliboy - Tendulkar, Pollock, Border, Harbhajan
Red Indian- Marshall, Lara, Steve Waugh, Croft
Varun_Utd - Gavaskar, Murali, Thomson, Laxman
KM- Ambrose, Kapil, Bob Willis, Flower
crappy - Holding, Gilchrist, Qadir, Miandad

MJJ hasn't picked a single bat. His bowling's looking pretty awesome though - Akram, Akhtar, Lee and Flintoff with Saqlain as a spin option. Pretty extreme strategy. You won't find any star batsmen now but there are a number of decent quality ones knocking about.

My bad. Inzy is an old favorite of mine

Don't think so. It is pretty random i think

And to think he would have had Waqar had he not missed his pick.

Well the plan was to have inzi act as the anchor but too late for that.

And yes I wanted the old wasim and waqar combo. :(

Pity. I can't think it would be too difficult given a database like cricinfo's. The probability based algorithm and the weights are the challenge but given the number of tambrahm stats boffins who're manic about cricket, I don't doubt it could be done. You could simulate ball by ball or the whole game in one shot depending on how ambitious you wanted to get. Don't doubt it'll be done at some point.

I know the feeling. I wanted one of Holding, Garner or Roberts to go with Marshall too but I got greedy when Lara was available and decided to let it go a turn thinking "surely one of the three will come back down." Famous last words.

Still Croft's pretty awesome. I love the quote on his profile - "Crofty would bounce his grandmother if he thought there was a wicket in it." It's just that he didn't have the sustained impact the rest had because of injuries and his apartheid tour blunder. What an era that was. To think the likes of Slyvester Clarke couldn't break through. He would walk into any team in world cricket today.

Yep, it's not bad. Not as comprehensive and as software tight as Football manager but it isn't bad. I once had an editor and I put myself into County cricket and failed miserably at becoming an Australian player...

Stay online. I have a lot of picks.. You will be back up soon.

Did you PM Red-Indian?

I'm at work so I will be online all day. The joys of running push-button machinery for 9 hours. :D

Right i'll take an opener then - Mark Taylor for his batting, slip fielding and for beginning the transition of Australia into an all time great team.

KM's second pick was also Chadnerpaul so we are stuck.

Varun didn't give me a second pick. KM Now has 6 hours to pick before we move to Varun.
RI is a cnut for picking Taylor.
That is all.

Well you'd better delete that Chanderpaul pick. It seems everybody wanted him. ghaliboy's already picked him so unless Crappy had a second choice, we're stuck at him and can't let KM pick Herath.

Edit: KM picked Herath on his first go round so that's okay. We're still stuck at crappy though

I advised him against the pick...

Edited. He could pick Herath regardless, but Crappy's second pick was Jayawardene. KM didn't have a backup.
