Conor McGregor vs Floyd Mayweather | Again?

I recall an interview with mayweather when he was fighting corralles I think, who had beaten up his pregnant wife and mayweather was gonna beat him for all the battered women across America.
Mayweather's history with battery is far too underreported.

Hmm, maybe. I would have assumed that Americans would be more aware of the racist use of the word "boy" given it's something from their own culture, as opposed to a guy from a country without that same history. Or at least they should be more aware of it.
To me, calling someone 'boy' is being belittling about their job, eg 'glass boy' working in a pub, picking up the empties.
Appreciate it may have different connotations in different cultures though.

To me "boy" is an every day word, from saying hello " story boy" to celebrating "ya boy".

The coverage this has got has been massive.

I'm starting to think it could eclipse the Mayweather Pacquiao fight in terms of numbers.

Even non fans of boxing are talking the fight up it's going to be a huge fight

The worst part about this is Conor claiming he's going to quadruple his net worth in about half an hour. This will only compel other fighters to attempt to imitate Conor and in the process drag what little integrity MMA has into the WWE zone.

I've been hearing UFC going "WWE" with it's hype and build up for years.....obviously Conors made himself bigger than the likes of Chael, but the trash talking shite will always be there and an easy hype in the fight game.

Chael for instance got himself fights he had no right getting due to his mouth, at least Conor had the record to deserve pretty much all of his fights......before his mouth talked himself into this silliness. I've barely paid attention to all this, but it's a laddy culture and all this seem ultraLAD stuff, all sorts of reposts and retweets. Just a nuisance to me, none of it's fun or organic.....because both know it's not, it's just for money.

Remember just two years ago, Dana White bashed up WWE and called it fake? You can check out the article here.
Oh the irony.

To be fair, Chael was seconds away from pretty comfortably beating Anderson silva when the spider was In his prime

Isn't UFC is just a bunch of bouncers in an octagon? Does anyone really think Conors has a chance?

Over the 4 pressers its clear to see that Floyd has been outgunned. He takes too long to think, doesn't know what to come back with, tries to hard to 'act' chilled. He's been rattled and owned for sure.

I can think of anyone I want to see lose and get KO'd more than Floyd 'money' Mayweather. The guy, even when not trash talking or trying to sell the right or rile the other guy psychologically so he can win, is just a real unpleasant person. You can see it a mile off. He may have $400m or whatever (minus taxes owed and whatever he's spunk of cars, diamonds and $1000 head shaves lol) but he didn't like it one bit in the Joshua meet and greet the fans when no one really cared about him, and now this, been completely spanked on stage.

I'd like to see him get dropped more than Amir Khan by Kel Brook. That's saying something!!! Bellew by Haye even! Simple as that!

Any truth in the rumour that this is going to be £90 PPV? (with a UK Sky Sports subscription)

Great piece.

I'm genuinely fascinated by McGregor's popularity. In this farcical fight, we have two narcissistic, greedy pricks going at each other. One has dominated a more popular sport; the other has only recently reached the peak of a niche sport. Yet one is universally reviled, while the other has a sizeable cult following.

Is it because McGregor's white? Is it Irish desperation for a sporting icon?

Either way it's the sporting public that loses out because they'll be cashing the massive cheque at our expense.

I think the Irish thing is a big factor but you have to remember that Floyd has a hell of a lot of fans too and McGregor also has a lot of haters.

The key difference between Floyd and McGregor is that the height of McGregor's crimes are crassness and arrogance whereas Floyd is a serial physical abuser of women. Where we are debating if McGregor's comments are racist, comments made by Floyd in the past have been so racist there was debate to be had. Mayweather is several orders of magnitude the greater asshole.

A lot of McGregor's popularity is due to his style. He will fight anyone at any weight using any rule set. He really comes across as a genuine badass which people love.

He is also a bit of an underdog in the way he came from nothing and in almost all his fights people write him off.

Also take into consideration a lot of people have seen him rise from nothing to where he is today so it's an inspirational story.

He has a very aggressive and visually pleasing fighting style too which also helps.

I think someone like mayweather is difficult to feel an affiliation with because he is so rich, arrogant and his previous demeanours towards women make his detestable

It's a well written article I'd agree with that not sure I agree with the overall sentiment of it though.

It reeks of "I don't like it so anyone who does is an idiot" which he basically alludes to in the paragraph about Buzzfeed, Love Island etc (which in fairness was a pretty funny paragraph.)

The article has some valid points on and I won't dispute them. I fully expect Mayweather to win the fight easily and I appreciate the fact people do dislike McGregor for his antics described but equally some people would just see it as some harmless fun.

I think essentially sport has developed and in particular combat sport. The guy makes a point of bringing in McIlroy and other Irish sportsmen and whilst I thought it came across as a bit needlessly insulting it's somewhat true. The MMA world and also boxing take their routes of promotion and hype come from the likes of Ali who got it from wrestling it's always going to be brash and over the top and it has been before Mayweather and McGregor and will continue to be so long after they're gone. It will turn people off events and that's fine and understandable but others enjoy it. Personally I just take it for what it is, I know there's no real animosity there most the time but equally I don't mind watching, some of it is way over the top, some of it can be interesting and some of it is funny.

McGregor is a very entertaining fighter when he fights though. Even in the MMA thread there's people who don't like him but will be entertained when he fights. His fake persona now people may find annoying but then some people will enjoy it. Humour is subjective really, I found some of it quite funny and some of it embarrassing.

I think it's a bit unfair to assume it's a race thing as well. McGregor may be an annoying fecker to some people but Floyd is a bit of a scumbag really, look at his criminal past and it's pretty disgraceful stuff.

I think the McGregor "act" is somewhat tedious at times. It is like he's a character in a TV show. He has catchphrases as well which is cringing. He did the "who the feck is that guy?" at Mayweather one at 1 point for example but over all he's probably more likeable than Mayweather.

How much is each fighter getting?

It's not been disclosed. Mayweather is meant to be getting (minimum) $100million and McGregor $75million but there's been other numbers floated about. It's worth baring in mind Floyd is also the main promoter on the fight so he'll get money from that as well so all this talk of McGregor "schooling" him in press conferences or whatever is perfect for Mayweather.

I like the fact that Conor appears to have absolutely no self doubt whatsoever. He's been like that from Day One, too. He's very inspirational.

Fair enough if he has fans for his style - but why go watch him at a bloody press conference?! He seems better than Mayweather but still a long way from likeable.

I imagine the split to be around 70-30 in Floyd's favour and the UFC's cut will be coming out of Conor's end.

How does Mayweather get the bigger slice? It seems to me Conors the bigger draw.

Replace Mayweather with any other boxer and try to imagine this level of hype. McGregor has the attitude and the fanbase to generate interest - plus there's the interest in him changing sport and challenging one of the best boxers - but Mayweather's pulling in a huge amount of interest.
