Music Commercial Hip Hop Thread

Great list of albums to listen to there. What's your usual taste in hip hop like?
Well, I'll need to provide a bit of context first. I'm 22 now, but I grew up in a household that worshipped Led Zep, U2, Genesis, Floyd etc. and then when I was 15/16 I was in a relationship that was based on both being big emo types, so I got left behind and missed a lot of hip hop.

But then in 2011 that relationship ended and I had a chance to open my ears up a little. I was introduced to Goodie Mob and Death Grips very quickly, as diverse as they both are, and I was reintroduced to Kanye West. Then Kendrick Lamar happened and when he happens you stay stuck.

As for hip hop artists I've been into either recently or since late 2011:

Apollo Brown & Guilty Simpson
A Tribe Called Quest
Beastie Boys
Big Boi
Boogie Down Productions
Danny Brown
Buck 65
Chance the Rapper
Childish Gambino
Common
Death Grips
De La Soul
Deltron 3030
Dizzee Rascal
Open Mike Eagle
Earl Sweatshirt
El-P
Eminem (older stuff)
EPMD
Eric B & Rakim
Flying Lotus
Goodie Mob
Jay Z
J Dilla
Kano
Kanye West
Killer Mike
Kendrick Lamar
Lauryn Hill
Madvillain
Nas
Nedlog Era
Notorious B.I.G.
NWA
Organized Konfusion
OutKast
Pharcyde
Pharaoh Monche
Quasimoto
The Roots
Run the Jewels
Shabazz Palaces
Slick Rick
Snoop Dogg
The Streets

If you can get a hold of EgoTrip's Big Book of Rap Lists, at the end they list the top 25 albums from every rap year between the 80's and 90's, might be useful to inform listening after this is done.

Also as an aside, maybe this can become a home of yours to maybe listen to albums with other people too and see what everyone thinks? I had the idea but never executed:

Cheers man!

We could make a new thread to discuss HipHop's evolution over the past 20 years?

Has anyone listened to Big Sean's new album 'I Decided.'? I always had Big Sean down as a fairly decent rapper.. but man I love this album. Can't stop listening to it. I don't even want to suggest any one song because the quality is so high from beginning to end. Highly recommend it!

It's very good.

Eminem's verse on that is getting a lot of attention

Taboo right, but I don't like that verse purely because I don't like how he sounds on that song. Puts me off.

Struggle to get into Big Sean, and struggling with this album. Too much going on.

Yeah he sounds a bit odd at times in the song.

I like the occasional Pharcyde beats in that song.

Have given Gambino's latest album a listen lately, it's brilliant

Maybe not commercial hip hop, but just seen there's a new LOX album coming out in a few weeks. Guaranteed some hard NY rap from Kiss, Styles and Sheek.

I also need to listen to the new Childish Gambino album. Redbone was a massive swerve from what I was expecting and I loved it. I might not like a whole album of that, but it's got me intrigued.

So what did you think of Awaken, my love!?

It's got 4 features in a 4 minute track and it's been out a while but this is good.

Anyone getting j cole tickets on Friday? Or bought already through presale? Haven't got a code :(

Eh, it's about as average as every Big Sean project.
