Who wins the Kendrick Lamar vs Drake debate?

Posted this in the "commercial" hip-hop thread because I wonder whether the ability to make so many hits that have changed the hiphop landscape should count as a factor one should be ranked on. Obviously Drake wins in his lane of music, and likewise with Kendrick. Is there a way to compare the two and place one on top of another (pause) objectively?

Hard to compare as one's a rapper (probably the best one there is currently) and the other is not.no but seriously, drake is fecking shit

In the bright afterglow of this new Kendrick album I feel it's pretty fruitless to compare them. Kendrick has clearly set himself apart from his peers and Drake is well...er...Drake, the way they approach making and executing rap music is completely different and it's good and healthy to have such polar opposites. Hits are important though, I think Kendrick could do with a few of them, plenty of rappers have made huge songs with important messages without sacrificing their artistic integrity. That's the only place Kendrick could improve on IMO.

They both cater to different audiences, not saying you can't be a fan of both, it just seems unfair to compare both of them - Kendrick just like Nas would always be branded as the "genius" the one who stimulates the mind and all that crap, not saying its not true, i just don't think Drake just like Jay z should have to suffer or be criticised for not doing the same thing, people clearly prefer both types of music as they are platinum selling artistes....so its safe to say they are perfectly fine staying in their lanes.

If you want to compare lyrical skills, Kendrick would kill you on your own song as would Drake, even if his verse on Nostelgia just slightly gives him the edge in my book.

Hits are also important in my opinion, A lot of Hip Hop fans use hits to remember eras, which would explain why Drake is the biggest brand in Hip Hop right now (new school hip hop), his songs are being played on the radio more than anyone else and he seems to be breaking records, but as a Drake fan i would be the first to tell you... he still doesn't have a GKMC, he doesn't have that album where people go "yes....that is undoubtedly a classic", Take Care and NTWS come close but i know a lot of people who will never call those 2 projects classics (i won't either), so the only thing Drake has over Kendrick is his mainstream appeal, which was under a lot of pressure when GKMC came out, in fact a commercial Kendrick is more of a threat to Drake as their verses on "F*ckin problem" would prove, Drake had a dope club verse, but Kendrick brought Jesus to the club and killed it.

Do hits really ensure your status as "King of an Era"?.......no. Nelly sold 17 million + albums from 2000 - 2004 with only 3 albums, Jay z sold 10 million + albums with 4 albums(2 classics) in that same time span, Nelly had hit songs but Jay z is still regarded as the king of the early 00s with 2 classics, Nelly doesn't get his just due despite dropping hits on hits on hits.

Ja Rule had a lot of hits on the radio but he never had an "In da club", 50 cent will always be remembered for making "In Da Club", Drake has a lot of hits but he still doesn't have a "Swimming pools".

I guess what I'm trying to say is Kendrick ticks more boxes (Hip Hop) than Drake and if they were to be compared side by side he would have an edge, doesn't take anything away from Drake though, i personally prefer Drake - if i had to pick singles for a playlist on my phone i would pick Drake's songs, if i had to pick an album to listen to i would pick G.K.M.C, if i had to put a collection of albums together to relate to i would pick Drake, if i want to be enlightened i would pick Kendrick.

Compare and contrast artists so regularly. Even ranking them numerically seems pretty juvenile.

The art was built on competition, it all started with who can rock the crowd better, i kind of like it this way, it does hinder a lot of people from appreciating good music though, I stopped fecking with Ja Rule when G-Unit was popping and it was cool to hate Ja Rule - i recently went back to listen to Rule 3:36 and Pain is love and i prefer them to anything 50 cent has ever released (even if GRODT is a classic), i feel like i owe Ja Rule an apology or a letter of some sort, Hip Hop can make you hate someone you really have no reason to hate.

"Pac had a nigga saying "feck Jigga, feck Biggie"
I was only like eleven so forgive me
A decade later I be all up in the city
Tryna get Hov to feck with me
With a burned CD full of jams that was up in my hand
When he said he didn't want it, it was "feck him again"
One day, he gon' regret playing me
Little did I know, in a year he'd be fecking paying me"

J.Cole - Villuminati

I absolutely appreciate the competitive nature of hip-hop, but it does get quite stale having to compare and contrast just about every successful artist. Drake and Kendrick aren't really comparable at all at the moment, especially when you listen to their latest projects, which I both enjoyed.

For my fellow A$AP fans on here, its been a long time coming and 2015 is about to be the best year in Hip Hop in over a decade

Any news on Documentary 2?

He'll have a chance to ruin the name of his one great album. I hope he brings it. Game is an artist who had so much potential, dude is a beast on the mic, but he hasn't grown like I thought he would. It makes sense looking back on the Documentary, half that album had beats meant for 50's second album, and 50 helped him write that joint.

I agree, he robbed 50 of a second classic album, although his west coast story was a great one, i am also against him naming it the Documentary 2 after hearing his last project, i don't have high expectations for this album but maybe I'm being too harsh, i mean i fecked with his first 5 albums and still feck with them so this might actually be decent.

But does The Game still have a story to tell?

Edit: Only Hov has been able to make a trilogy in 2 different decades that related to the times they were in..... (Blueprint 1,2,3)

Documentary is a not a very good album in retrospect. Rumoured tracklist:

Game has improved in every single way since then, but he's not put out anything as consistently good, track for track, as that album. It's one of my favourite albums, I can just pick it up at any time and listen through it. But then again I am a big Game fan.

Well given his last album (Blood Moon) I'm scared as feck when it comes to Documentary 2. Documentary and DA are one of my favourite albums, if D2 is anything alike to Blood Moon then he can as well just fecking drop the idea.

 You mean The Massacre?

It was a great album... some of the beats from the Documentary would have made it better, but not by much, definitely not to the level of classic.

Game is a beast, my fav rapper by far....!

Same here. I think he's not lived up to his potential though, he should be going down as a great based on his talent, story telling, west coast/compton background, diverse styles etc. One day I think he'll put something together that is just insane. Hopefully this will be it.

Regarding Blood Moon, I just put it down as a bit of a rushed project full of filler tracks, which it basically was from what I've read.

I meant the Documentary, you could definitely tell that half of that album was influenced by 50, if 50 kept those songs he gave the game he probably would have had a classic, i definitely don't think the massacre is a classic though, nowhere near.

The tracks with Kendrick and the joint with Drake look like they sound dope, i wish HOV will finally bless him with a verse though, The Game has been begging for a verse for 10 years, i mean its only right.

I wouldnt sweat it if I were him. Jigga doesn't spit anything I want to hear these days

Im just generally not interested in Jay anymore. He's served his purpose for me. I remember first hearing him in 96. I've outgrown him as an artist I suppose.

I get what you're saying, i really cant be done with Hov till his last album, i hope he drops it next year to mark the 20th anniversary of Reasonable doubt.

can you imagine

Does anyone else go to the club sometimes... Not to dance, not to meet women, not meet hang out with your dudes but to update your playlist and get new jams? Or am I the only one that is washed at the moment ?
