College Football Season Begins...

College football coverage is virtually non-existant to be honest. We have a weekly football paper called "First Down" that is mostly devoted to the NFL but has a few college pages. The network station that covers the NFL showed the Miami v Nebraska Rose Bowl in 2002 but nothing since. The Web will help though.

I just read about Bear Bryant and the immense rivalry with Auburn and got hooked. Great uniform as well...i love the numbers on the helmet.

yeah, Bryant was a great coach, but an intolerable bigot.

you might really enjoy what we are in the middle of right now which is "recruiting season"

it's when the best senior high school players in the nation begin "committing" to their prospective colleges...it is a massive deal here with colleges actively trying to get the best players...

that Alabama scout site I gave you will ahve the list of all players "bama is recruiting at the moment, who has committed to them, who is leaning towards them etc...

this site also has excellent recruiting news...it lists the "Top 100 Senior high school players in the nation" where they have committed or what schools they are interested in if they haven't committed to yet. the committment deadline is February 2nd and recruiting activity and prospects visiting the schools are frenetic from now untill then.

every year they "grade" the best recruiting classes as well...great stuff...

Crocket was from Tennessee.

As for the topic....

Hook Em Horns. Really hope we lay a whoopin' on Ohio State next week, but I'll be happy with a close win (which I'm tipping UT for the win, regardless of being on foreign soil and being a bit biased perhaps). And this should be the year UT beats OU, but I'm not getting ahead of myself yet. But should UT win these two early games against top foes, they should run the table setting up a great showdown in College Station the day after Thanksgiving Day. Win that, and UT is a shoe in for the national title game (surely they won't blow up in the Conference title game against Nebraska or whomever).

The Eyes of Texas are upon you,
You can not get away.
Do not think you can escape them
At night or early in the morn-
The Eyes of Texas are upon you

you know nothing is "surely" with UT Marcello ;)

still, I took extra pleasure in watching the Choklahomos lose to TCU

Offensive line was shite last night ... most sacks ever allowed by a Miami team. Found a great QB though, Kyle Wright hung in there and made some excellent passes in the second half. Our kicking game really screwed us, 2 pissed FG and a bad snap.

Defense was on as usual, and FSU will be hard pressed in the QB situation this season.

FSU won 10-7. Miami took 9 minutes off the clock on a final drive when they couldn't score, and a bad snap on the tying FG attempt ruined it for us.

couldn't believe how many times FSU got through the UM line.

FSU quarterbacks suck, though Lee has alot of promise

Wright was excellent all things considered and is a hell of a lot bigger and more mobile than Berlin. He'll be a good one but if UM doesn't sort out their O line problem it will be a very long season indeed. Makes no sense, they have the personnel.

I don't think they will be in the hunt after that loss, they'll drop a game somewhere, probably Va Tech and maybe a shocker some where. it'll be tought make the ACC championship game now...

one thing is for sure though, Miami and FSU aren't the same caliber teams they were 3 years ago and throughout the 90s and mid to late 80s.

though i'd still rate Miami higher on their work ethic and systerm.

FSU has forever just got the best recruits and stuck them in a crappy system and expected them to just make plays, and that is what has come home to roost...other teams have gotten better and smarter and FSU's athletes can't just walk all over them the way they did in the 90s.

I was thinking the same thing, dropping to the Hokies. They're always a thorn in our side. I still think we have a shot at the ACC title, because in all honesty, I think the division is weak this year (compared to others). Still hope for a BCS bid.

Our O-Line couldn't stop the blitz for shit last night, too many 3rd and longs to count. If Wright had had some time in the pocket it would've been a different scoreline. I really didn't expect Miami to make a run for the title this year, but possibly next year or the year after. As I thought and was hoping, Olsen stepped up big last night, but he did it too late in the game. His 2 dropped passes in the first half right fecked us.

FSU's running backs are going to give people hell this year, and Lee does have some promise. Pretty sure he'll steal the starting job next time Weatherford fecks up.

this was actually a decent article about the game that also sums up my opinion about the current state of both squads.

------------------

HeismanPundit.com voices its opinion on the Miami-Florida State game, and the two sunshine state teams' season prospects...

September 5th, 2005

Florida State has beaten Miami, 10-7, in one of the worst-played football games in the history of this fabled series.

Where to begin with how to describe the state of these two programs, both of whom have dominated college football for much of the past 20 years?

Past games in the series were not high scoring either, but that was because of the incredibly high level of competition between the two amazingly talented teams. These days, the offenses of both these teams are so bad, so inept, that scoring seems to be impossible. Nonetheless, Brent Musberger hyped the end of the third quarter, calling this one a 'dandy.' But I beg to differ.

About the only exciting part of the game was seeing those two incredibly hot Florida State girls giving the tomohawk chop for the camera. Did anyone else notice the website address on their t-shirts? I did. And here it is. Don't worry, it's safe for work (unfortunately).

What problems do these teams have? Miami's are not as bad as FSU's. Kyle Wright played solid, though not spectacular. He should develop over the course of the season and turn into a good player. But the Hurricanes have shockingly little dynamism on offense, especially at the tailback spot. One play in particular stood out for me: Miami tailback Tyrone Moss broke into the open field early in the game, only to get quickly dragged down by FSU's tiny freshman cornerback Tony Carter. It was a one-on-one situation and the defender stuck it to the Hurricane back. I'll say this right now: Tyrone Moss is NOT in the realm of the great Miami tailbacks. Without a real threat at tailback, Miami's offense will have a hard time getting untracked. The offensive line also has troubles and the receivers--where was Lance Leggett?--look to be lackluster. About the only bright spot was tight end Greg Olsen, but even he had to rebound from some early drops.

FSU has greater problems. Their quarterback situation is a mess. They have two very good tailbacks, but that's about it. What's more, the Seminoles continue to play incredibly tight in games of this magnitude. It's almost as if they are trying not to lose rather than trying to win. It all goes back to Bobby Bowden, who has drifted aimlessly for the last six or seven years or so. But more importantly, his mentality has always been to sneak his way to a win, rather than dominate. Want an example? He was asked years ago what the proudest play of his career was. Did he recall a play that resulted in a touchdown, or an immediate win for FSU? No. He harkened back to 1988 and the famous puntrooskie play against Clemson, a huge fourth-quarter gain that put the ball inside the Tiger 10. It eventually led....to the winning field goal. Now, you can say I am making too much of that, but how else to explain the mentality exhibited by FSU in tonight's game, when they took over after a blocked punt on Miami's 2-yard line? The Seminoles played for the field goal...and missed. After all the years of losing to Miami because of kicking problems, they still were playing it safe. To me, it says a lot. It didn't come back to bite them tonight, but they had little to do with that.

So Florida State wins after an uncharacteristic Miami muff of a field goal with two minutes left. How poetic.

They finally beat the Canes, but it will probably turn out to be the most irrelevant FSU-Miami game since 1981.

And neither of these two teams will win the ACC.

Good read, spot on. Leggett was completely missing last night, and the one touch he had on what I believe was a crossing route on 3rd down hit him in the hands and he dropped it.

Moss dropped a lot of weight because Coker doesn't want to be carrying really any Full Backs this season. Hill could be the answer, but he'll have to prove it. Tripping over his own feet on a 3rd and long counter in which the recievers had pulled the whole secondary deep doesn't improve his situation.

ALSO ... Hester was piss fecking poor last night. Absolutely disgraceful. He played like a redshirt who's been missing practices. Returned 1 kickoff to the 18, muffed 2 and let every other punt bounce and put them deep in the back.

0 points...bye week ;)
That's a big part of why the NFL is superior...that and the point spreads. There are only a handfull of games each year that really decide the title so I find it a bit thin. Love it when ND loses though ;)

Quentin Coryatt from 1991 Texas A&M "The Hit"

broke the receiver's jaw and knocked him out....look at the dude's legs shaking as he's on the ground

I like when they get that leg-shaking thing going - solid football tackle :D

I don't remember it being especially violent, but OU's Roy Williams jumping over both lines and taking out his victim (victims) was an excellent college football play. I didn't describe it well, but I'm sure you know what I'm talking about. Hell of a tackle.

OU-Texas on the goal line...I'm sure Marcello remembers it very well

...and you think that's funny? You're brutal man.

Anyway go Wolverines. Time to kick some Notre Dame butt......

Good game brewing in Tempe. Louisiana State was supposed to be at home for this one and needs to show that #5 ranking is no fluke. ASU crushed Temple and is ranked #15, although preseason PAC 10 polls had them anywhere from 2nd to 4th. If the Sun Devils can prevail, we "might" have a challenger for USC in the league. If LSU wins big, we might be looking at USC's opponent in the Rose Bowl come January.

Simms never had a chance on that play. The perfect timing by RW. A split second early, RW is offsides. A split second late, RW misses Simms. It was the difference in a dull game, as the fumble resulted in a defensive touchdown, and a 14-3 lead.

Boy do I feel stupid. :( For a team ranked no. 3 that was embarrasing stuff from our offense. Credit to Notre Dame though, they shut us down in the Big House.

I have always respected Michigan, but they usually are overrated going into the season.

feck ND...their offense sucked other than the 1st drive.

Michigan shot themselves in the foot inside the red zone 3 times.

Michigan is simply not the same team without Braylon Edwards.

and ND while riding high after beating a shitty Pitt team and an average Michigan team, still have no talent and are just playing well because of a new psychological attitude that Weis has brought. They still have a mediocre talent level, a QB who can't throw deep that well, and unproven receivers.

I hate ND and am still not impressed.

Oklahoma looked like shit today as well, save for Adrian Peterson who is great.

If Texas doesn't beat OU this year MAck Brown should be fired...twice.

Michigan lacked both a running game and offensive line protection. That combo problematic to say the least.

Big game tonight between The Ohio State University and UT.

Hopefully it will prove to be worth the hype.
