We should have the new stadium by 2029/2030 perfect time to go all out and bring 25 year old Cole Palmer to his beloved United.
To be fair it depends, Cryuff was a player and probably had close or outright genius intellect, same applies to most great managers like our own sir Alex or pep as of now.I think characterising footballers as dim is often unfounded. It used to be a cliché that footballers weren’t bright - I have come to believe that this was some kind of weird therapy for fans who could take solace in the fact that they wanted something to have over these very well paid young men who are mostly from working class backgrounds.
While their formal education will have been disrupted it doesn’t mean they don’t have intelligence. Rooney was an incredibly intelligent player on the pitch. While that doesn’t translate to scholarly insight, it does indicate an underlying sense of intelligence. Palmer is also a clever footballer.
We know very little about these players yet we’re very quick to label them.
He did an ‘interview’ on Sky Sports, good grief, he’s a painful watch, so Cole why did you choose Yamal as the most skillful player……he’s just got it ain’t he…thanks for that insight Cole, what about Mainoo in 2nd…..he’s a baller in he…
Good player but my god he’s a bit dim.
Was like pulling teeth, the guy asking the questions must be used to it though.
To be fair, I do understand him. There are some players you look at and they just have 'it'. It might be a little difficult to express exactly what the 'it' is in straightforward terms but we all know what he means
The media can make them seem a bit stupid by asking them things they've no reason to know about.I think characterising footballers as dim is often unfounded. Also this. Probably mostly this.A lot of the time when people talk about players being thick I tend to think it's more just a lad being shy speaking in front of a camera.
It did stop him from having a long career though. Well, being dim and fond of a pint.
I find the arrogance and ignorance that comes along with discussions of intelligence with regard to footballers incredibly irksome.
Droning on about whether player A or B is thick neither makes it so or reflects well nor considers how many footballers have their formal education disrupted or even that having a degree isn’t the be all end all of intelligence. It also displays intellectual snobbery and carries the assumption those denigrating are smarter than those they’re deriding.
Exactly."Intelligence" is a hard thing to nail down. I have a colleague who is clearly very clever, probably one of the best at his job I've met at his age (especially the technical bits). He isn't a great communicator, and you wouldn't think he's as clever as he is.

I think it’s easy to forget that being in front of a camera being interviewed isn’t a natural or comfortable thing for most people.
Being a fantastic football doesn’t mean you’re suddenly going to be an amazing public speaker or lose any natural shyness you have.
It’s not even about being in front of a camera, the reason they give stupid answers is because they get stupid questions about repetitive topics at an unusual frequency. An actor might do a 2 month burst of 20 interviews across different media and of different lengths to promote a film, and then go dark for months. Football has media exposure every other day, it’s mostly on tv, mostly in short bursts and live, and they’re mostly asked the same questions and expected to recycle the same tropes over and over again. Nothing about the format or frequency is designed to allow them to be expressive, thoughtful or interesting. And they all get extensive media training that teaches them how to fit in that narrow box. Expecting people to sound intelligent while performing in that circus act is absurd.I think it’s easy to forget that being in front of a camera being interviewed isn’t a natural or comfortable thing for most people.
