Cold War against China?

Do you mean because it's Huawei specifically, or do you mean accepting Chinese investment in general?
The CCP has been going so far out of their way to defend Huawei and pour a lot more money in it than other private Chinese companies like Alibaba or Tencent. Then there are the numerous allegations of military and intelligence ties with Huawei on top of accusations of backdoor espionage involving Huawei products for well over a decade. Why do you think North America, Australia and several nations in Europe have slammed the door shut on Huawei in recent years?

Look at the long list of controversies involving Huawei, sources in support. Macron must be so desperate for money if he's willing to take that risk despite all warnings from several European neighbors.

I think those countries shut the door because it was made clear to them, as the US-China gulf deepened, that partnering up with Huawei for digital infrastructure would compromise the security of the alliance network as whole. Which is understandable, but I don't really think it was about the privacy of the common European citizen.

As for desperate for money, that's undeniable. Who else is offering to build industry in France, or Italy for that matter?

I'm not for it either, it seems like an incredibly stupid thing to allow. But I imagine this will be a recurring story in the coming years as European countries try to balance security and economy. Europe, unlike North America, isn't a rich place in itself when decoupled from its surroundings.

U.S. intelligence officials determined the Chinese spy balloon used a U.S. internet provider to communicate

WASHINGTON — U.S. intelligence officials have determined that the Chinese spy balloon that flew across the U.S. this year used an American internet service provider to communicate, according to two current and one former U.S. official familiar with the assessment.

The balloon connected to a U.S.-based company, according to the assessment, to send and receive communications from China, primarily related to its navigation. Officials familiar with the assessment said it found that the connection allowed the balloon to send burst transmissions, or high-bandwidth collections of data over short periods of time.

Fake news is already a mega powerful tool, imagine how much more powerful it can get if you can use personalized data of the individual to make stories. Scary.

I think the hot war has turned from a possibility to a likelihood with China. The next president of the US will likely be a war time president. This situation will most likely give confidence to Russia that they can strike Europe while the US is distracted. We are in for a very difficult next 5 or so years IMO.

The politics and demographics of Taiwan changed a little dramatically in 1949.

can you elaborate further?

are you saying: since a bunch of Han Chinese, together with the fleeing ROC regime, rushed to the Island by 1949, so it was okay/acceptable/reasonable for CCP to change its stance on Taiwan?

The US armed forces really lost their hand when it comes to punishing traitors and deserters.

27 months over military spionage. I wonder how it would pan out the other way around
The Chinese would definitely execute or jail for life anyone doing military espionage for her/his country of origin and against China.

That 27-month sentence is a joke, especially in the current geopolitical context and considering that sailor swore his oath to enter military service. Going against an oath is not something anyone serious should ever treat lightly. :annoyed:

Not only that. They would sentenced them aa you say and you will the public opinion will never know what happened as they will not like that is known that happened

Maybe the guy was being blackmailed/threatened/coerced into doing it or something? There must be a reason it's so lenient.

Could be. But if it was blatantly proven that was blackmailed, i dont think it would be public and maybe they would not condemn him
But it could be one possibility

I'm reminded of Jiang Zemin telling Mike Wallace something to the tune of democracy not being part of Chinese culture.

Feckers are doing similar to what Putin has been doing in Ukraine with northeastern Burma right now. The Junta leader of Burma is pretty dumb, trying to get favor from Putin, and China decided to feck him up for that pretty much. Obviously, the common people get the worst of it, as usual.

Why would the CCP lean in on this angle?

For example, in an October 2023 program on ‘uncovering the Israel elements of U.S. elections in history,’ PRC state media (China’s central television) alleged that ‘Jews who represent 3% of the U.S. population control 70% of its wealth.’

I wouldn’t be concerned if I was Taiwanese right now. China’s economy is on the brink and a war that would invite American intervention would only cause serious and further economic turmoil.

it won’t be long I don’t think before Xi requests sale of foreign assets in order to pump money back into the Chinese economy.

If what you say is it true, that the chinese economy is on the brink, more the reason for china to go after Taiwan. Nationalism is a perfect excuse to divert economic problems and going after Taiwan would tick the box

China’s economy is on the brink
The Chinese economy grew by 5.2% last year. Better than expected and levels which Europe would kill for. They of course have lots of issues(Although these issues are very similar to the rest of Europe)but it’s not on the brink of collapse.

How’s that working for Russia?
Surprisingly well

Collapse of its largest construction company/developer, massive unemployment and negative wage growth.

Doesn’t take much to work out somebody is telling porkies… perhaps the same porkies coming out of Russia.

hot tip, strong economies don’t see companies that large collapse without government intervention.
