Coentrao to leave Real | Loan deal collapses

I wouldn't mind seeing him here, but I'm confident that Fabio will come through successfully in the next two years.

Fabio might be. But Coentrao is the real deal now. And he can play (decently) in RB and left-wing, which is really a big advantage.

Although, of course those positions aren't an urgent matter this season.

Meh, he's more than good enough offensively to play on the left wing ahead of Evra too, and he's often deputized as a defensive midfielder under Mourinho. He's an extremely versatile player who wouldn't struggle to get games here, I reckon.

Not very versatile at all IMO. He played DM and played crap

Marcelo is better than him?

Without a doubt IMO. Coentrao is slightly better defending though...could argue this is a left backs main responsibility ;)

If Mourinho wants him, he'll go to Chelsea. If not expect the usual suspects to be in for him.

If he's going at a decent price, sure I'd love it if we were in for him but similarly I won't be too bothered should he go elsewhere. This is just classic Madrid though.

Was a classic mourinho and mended really....

People here are quite funny. Madrid receive loads of criticism for not letting coaches decide and once the club gives mourinho all the power and he pays a crazy 30m for this player you criticize the club anyway...

What am I missing here? He talks about not feeling wanted and he's on the bench or in the stands quite a bit, so why would he follow the manager, that is largely responsible for this, into his next club?

Because Mourinho supported him and played him. When Marcelo proved why he should be the leftback starter (last season of course!) Mourinho kept talking about Coentrao being "polivalent" as the Spanish describe it. What that means is Mou tried him at right-back, in the middle, basically anything to prove he was worth 30m. It didn't work.

The only position where he looked good was leftback and the fans (despite Mourinho) always saw him as second choice, even there.

Yes, if you believe that class is temporary and form permanent.

No. I was impressed by Valencia when he played great but that was also him playing better than he was used to. That season wasn't his average. His average is somewhere between this season and his good one. But he's also irrelevant since you're never gonna see him on the left or Coentrao on the right unless something is seriously wrong with the squad.

I also said he could make our squad on the wing which is hardly an overstatement. I've never rated Young more than a squad player and Nani is definitely better on the right wing. Our left wing position is the most unstable position. We've got most players playing there and it's the position that's rotated the most. Nani, Young, Rooney, Welbeck, Giggs, Kagawa. All played there.

Any signs of a move to Chelsea materialising now Maureen's back?

Think he's happy to stick with Cole and focus on other areas.

First thing I said when the Baines news broke is this guy is on the market. Might cost a similar price to be fair given Madrid paid so much to get him but he's at a great age and is tested at the top level of International and European football, seems a no brainer to me.

Always thought Coentrão should have pursued his career as a winger, probably on the right. He was fantastic there in his Rio Ave days, and that's what Benfica wanted of him. They caught themselves suddenly without left-back options and gave him a try, which worked well because he's talented and hard-working, but I don't think it should have been a definitive adaptation. He could have developed into something even more sweet on his original winger position. He has loads to offer in attack.

Done loan deal:

@SamWallaceIndy: Fabio Coentrao signs loan deal for #MUFC. Everton wouldn't sell Leighton Baines for £15m

Wtf....really?

Well...he's a very good player so this is welcome.

If we loan him with a buy-out fee set (I believe Madrid would agree to that as they want to sell him anyway) then it'd be the only positive of this transfer window.

Would love if there is an option to buy him, nice bit of business but does this mean Moyes wants Evra fecked onto the bench

Marca saying Coentrao is staying in Madrid, not joining Man Utd

Woodward should be resigning tomorrow. Too late? Really?

Have no idea if he is as good as Evra, but he played for a Mourinho Madrid so he cant be a bad player. sounds more exotic than Leighton Baines so thats something.

Surely a welcome addition to the squad and sounds like a fantastic and unexpected piece of business!
