He was agreed for 31 million in the summer. What has changed since then , to be worth double of that ?

13 goals at PSV and three in the World Cup. Probably doesn't hurt that we're a little desperate and already paid some insane fees to their rivals in Amsterdam.

I'm not saying don't sign anyone, I'm saying Gakpo isn't the guy we should be going for. Gakpo will be a 50m squad player who fails to outperform other starters which isn't what we want. We need depth, 100%. Get someone to be depth. I'm very much OK with getting Memphis in January for cheap, having him rotate with Martial and have Rashford, Antony, Garnacho and Sancho be the wing options. That will be good enough to see us through to the summer or the following summer, where we have the budget to actually spend big on a player that suits us more.

Gakpo is just going after a shiny toy who scored a few goals in the first half of the season in the dutch league and a few goals against mediocre opposition in the world cup, and COMPLETELY ignoring what players we have, what sort of player Gakpo is, what our team needs actually are, and his adaptability to the Prem. He's prime potential flop material and generally just doesn't have the potential level that would be required to succeed here.

Don't know if you specifically, but most of you were saying this same thing for licha so... Meh. Let's wait and see

There were questions about whether he could do it in the PL, and after scoring for fun in the Dutch league and finding the net with relative ease in the WC it seem's he probably can have a decent impact in the PL also.

Changing my mind on this guy and hope he's about to take off and trust the manager.I say get in

Something like 12 goals and 15 assists in 19 league/Europa league games? And then three goals in the World Cup. Be strange if his price hadn't jumped.

 But which ones? Not for PSV clearly, so are people simply judging him on two games in the World Cup against USA/Argentina while ignoring the 3 goals he scored in the group games? He played well against USA too, the only disappointing game was against the eventual winners Argentina.

I agree he wasn't bad. But i do think there was a tinge of disappointment around his general play. Might be unfair, but think we all hoped to see something more, that not only backed up his numbers, but clearly displayed why ETH wants him and what he would bring to our system.

He scored a few goals. But didn't really answer any of the questions.Which has probably contributed to a general lack of optimism and indifference around his potential signing.

Haven't seen enough of him to comment much but as people are asking what exactly he's good at, here's some quotes from a random Opta Analyst piece on him. Make of it what you will.
I saw an interesting video on him, but I can't remember where, talking about the work he does with a Dutch football advisor. They analyse Gakpo's performance each game, what he did well, and what he should be doing. Someone who actively works on improving themselves in this way is gold dust, and that is why, without outstanding technical ability, he is able to post such good numbers, and improve them year on year. This attitude also makes him a great role model for younger players. After seeing the links and the numbers I got excited, but watching him play I was also not blown away. His attitude to improving his football brain is what really impresses me. I doubt there are many players who are so dedicated to this side of the game.

Honestly unsure about him... What I am 100% sure about however is we desperately need additions in january, especially attacking options.

It could be the difference between top 4 or not. So if ETH wants him then I hope he gets him.

I would get him in Jan as I also think not replacing Ronaldo with a half decent player could mean missing out on Top 4.

No, No and and please No but I trust ETH so my mind says keep just your fecking mouth shut.

I'm with you. Excited couple of weeks ago but now strangely unsure. He is good for sure but not better than what we already got. Guess it depends what the final price will be.

I think a lot of the uncertainty comes from how exactly we would intend to use him and how he fits into our larger plans.

If it was clear that, say, we would be signing a proper #9 in the summer regardless and that Gakpo will cover CF, LW and #10 as needed then I can't see how you could complain.

Especially as we have lost Ronaldo, are unsure on Sancho and currently have the lifeless VDB as our back-up #10. Adding another body and extra productivity across those positions would be a big plus, in both the short and long term.

He’s on his way, and I for one welcome our new signing and believe working with ETH will give him every reason to be a success here.

I'm unsure about him but if Ten Hag wants him, then lets go for it. I know his record at Ajax wasn't great with signings but he's got a 100% hit rate here so far. And we're talking Fred money, not Sancho money here. It's a risk worth taking for a squad that doesn't have any depth at the CF position and in a market not seemingly brimming with high level CF's who are available.

What are the resident Dutch and PSV fans thoughts on him and a potential move to United? Will he be able to step up a higher level or two?

Lad could be the next giroud in that he never seems to be favoured by fans, but always delivers and managers love him.

True but at least you knew our CBs were weak and we didn't have a left footer. Thought we'd have higher priorities rather than anything against Licha himself.

Gakpo for me just doesn't look anywhere near talented enough, along with just not being a position of need.

If we get him, I hope he can adapt to be a quality CF. He hasn't shown much hold up play game, but he is a smart player, a good passer/crosser and a brilliant shot. I don't think it's out of his realm of possibilities that he turns into a Kane type striker, but that's his 1% peak range of outcome. Need to see consistent hold up play ability and getting in the box far more often first, but if he doesn't develop that part of his game than he won't be more than a squad player.

Hard to get excited about this one. He's basically Rashford without the blistering pace. When Rashford, Martial and Antony are all fit he's on the bench for me.

Don't think too many on here were overly enthusiastic about signing midget Martinez either, so I'll trust Ten Hag on this one if it happens

If he replaces Elanga on the bench that's fine with me.

For 40m, it's an excellent buy.

Do you see our game changer from the bench? It's an 18 y.o. winger on his debut season as pro.

Yes. There's no obvious good striker available at that cost, either.

For £40m in January it's a decent signing. So long as signing him doesnt end our search for a number 9.

Ultimately Elanga and probably Sancho wont have a long term future, and Martial is never going to be fit enough. I can see Gakpo joining Rashford, Garnacho and Antony as the 4 favoured wide forwards, even if 3 of them prefer the left, plus a proper number 9 in the summer.

Another sign that its all change behind the scenes if we arent quibbling on this and just getting it done. No pics of Murtough or Arnold meeting the PSV sporting director in Eindhoven either...

I can understand the price increase but not this doubling . 35-40 m would be decent investment.

More two-footed, better in the air and a better crosser then Rashford I’d say.

Perhaps we are all wrong and he's not trying to replace Ronaldo, but Sancho.

It’ll be nice to have cover across the entire front 3, although not sure he’s played at CF much his career, seems like a gamble but if EtH wants him then I back it. Doesn’t look like anyone else available really anyway.

You cannot accomodate him, Rashford, Martial, Sancho, Antony, Garnacho and a new CF (considering he comes in summer). Too many quality players and not enough minutes. Someone is leaving?
