This deal has clearly been negotiated prior to the World Cup. They move better then other clubs which is why they got Gakpo and United didn’t.

Give credit where it’s due.
Not really. If United wanted him we could still get him as be prefers United and ETH. Apparently, I don't see anything from our side.

Also, let's stop this nonsense that Gakpo deal is an example of fantastic scouting. Southampton and Leeds were pretty close in summer and they wanted to sign him. Those were the level of the clubs interested. Probably this season's form and world cup changed everything.

Fabrizio in the mud again. The guy has no clue about United and his reports about our business are meaningless.
That's the only silver lining for me all evening! Proving to be the fake he is.

Looks like some of the others like Whitwell have also been caught out on this news.

So annoyed we haven’t signed another left winger. Rashford, Sancho, Garnacho is not enough depth ffs.

He's scored 9 in 14 in the Eredivisie. Pretty good until you realise this is the same league Steven Bergwijn has scored 8 in 14 and Luuk De Jong has scored 3 in 6.

Maybe after Liverpool gets Gakpo, I think that United will concentrate more on Osimhen. I think Osimhen fits as hell in this United team and could be another phenomena, if he goes to United or some big clubs.

Seems like it could work out better for us in the long run anyway. Would have been a square peg in a round whole by the sounds of things. Still need to bring in a striker though!

Always good fun to see the smartest guy in the room being shown up for having no actual information

I get the feeling @SportingCP96 is now trolling the forum cause he got a tough time over Ronaldo..
Huh?? This is what I mean. What does Ronaldo have to do with this?

I don’t know if Gakpo will be a hit or not but I think he has some interesting characteristics as a player to succeed at liverpool.

When you see the prices many average I players go for these days 60M + I think that Gakpo is a solid gamble which Liverpool have little to lose from (similar to when United got Bruno for a steal imo).

it’s more in line with what Liverpool do besides their major Darwin blip.

If we get towards the end of January and it’s looking unlikely that we are going to strengthen then fine, panic. But let’s not start sucking Liverpool cock just yet.

Not hugely disappointed as I'm not massively convinced by him. But it's a bit concerning that having gone into the world cup with a thin squad we have now lost Ronaldo and Sancho is out indefinitely. We are completely reliant on Rashford as Martial will almost certainly be sidelined by the end of January.
Yup, we are now overly reliant on Rashford and Bruno, and will play a game every 4th day. Sancho, Martial and Antony better step up big time.

That's the only possible explanation here. 45m basically free
Compared to 80M for Antony or 80M for maguire?

Yes I would say so. 45M in todays market is not the same as 45M in years gone by.

Gakpo was player of the year in the same league and same position (but different wing) that Antony played in and yet we have paid nearly 50 million more. How has that happened?

Based on the world cup, he's decent but nowhere near good enough to cry about going to Liverpool and definitely not a position we're desperate for.

I also think Diaz has more potential but that's mere personal feeling

I did speculate a few times that all the claims ETH massively wanted him might have just been paper/agent talk.

I still think that if ten Hag really wanted him for Utd then he'd have been signed.

He's not a CF and I've not been that impressed by him, so it's not much of a big deal.

Agree on all counts.

Will be even less of a deal if we bring in a striker this window. How about we sell a few decking players if money is an issue, Elanga, Pellistri, Maguire, DVB, AWB could all be sold now to fund a move for a striker.

He’s not an out and out striker so no point going too overboard. We’ve stockpiled enough left sided forwards over the last few years.

I agree with your overall point.

However, if there is money available and ETH was given guarantees that we would be making an attacking signing in Jan, I'm pretty sure he'll be pissed off over the dilly dallying of his number 1 target...

Probably used to it after all the messign about with DeJOng.....and wasnt that partly him?

i think Gapko is a better signing for them than us. But does he start over Diaz on last seasons form? (not that I think he keeps it up) or Nunez?

Personally I am not bothered at all in us missing out on him if we do. Good young player, dont see him becomign a great one and I tink he adds to our squad with too many plaeyrs best on the left and doesnt really give us the striker we need....who the striker is that doesnt cost north of £70m is another thing altogether as I dont see any, but Gapko was never the right signing for me anyway

What happened here? ETH hung out by the club or we were never that determined to get him.

I presume he’s absolutely class now that he’s signing for Liverpool unlike the shite he was when linked to us.

We must have pulled out of the race and have other irons in the fire, PSV would have tried to create an auction otherwise.

So the scousers and everyone who hates us will be saying gakpo rejected us for them. I don’t think that’s true… we rejected him because we don’t need him. We need a striker. I’m sure if we wanted him he’d of signed for us over them.
I'm not sure he would choose us over them necessarily. However I do think if we had really wanted him this would have been done last summer or before Pool really became interested.

Congrats to Liverpool for getting the deal done with such little public drama.

I wonder if there is any aspect of potential new owners in this? Sugar daddy coming-in and wanting to hit the ground running splashing the cash?

Ya it’s crazy that they overpaid that much tbh.

Gapko may not be a world beater but much much better than Elanga. Smart club would have binned elanga and got gapko.

Not the player we need at this moment but if he can develop into a central striker has potential to be elite
