Can someone please define to me what "more important" fan means? Or even a "superior" fan? On what is the metric is this being measured upon?

More important fans will be the ones who have a connection to the history of the club. The ones who are so important in maintaining the heritage, creating an atmosphere and maintaining tradition. The ones that United have on advisory boards, use to decide future developments and interact with the players.

Here is what I am saying. I will make it 100% crystal clear.

I got tagged by someone who lives thousands of miles away from Manchester about how happy he is supporting Manchester United now his home town heroes might purchase the club. He is buzzing about this.
@Abdullah7 had specifically mentioned he has supported United passionately for many years. Way before the Qataris were ever interested in purchasing United. Any person would be proud if their clan/family/country were to buy the club they have loved for many years.

Geography does not make a lesser fan. I have met fans and helped them with tickets at Old Trafford who have spent their life savings to watch a team they love. Luckily you were born in Manchester and had a local team to follow and love.

There's really no need to condescend.

Thank you to the first mod to step in and call out his nonsense.

But- doesn’t geography make someone a lesser fan Sultan? If it doesn’t- why are they called Manchester United?

Okay. So, what about fabs who live in the Midlands that attend all home and away games. They've had season tickets since the 70's, and have been attending ever since. They go to more or less to all the European games. They're currently in Seville.

They're maintaining a tradition. Their kids are United fans. Sing all the songs.

Are they less important than the "local" fans who do the same?

No they’re mint. Better fans than me.

I am superior and more important fan than someone from abroad yes.
No, you're not.

A large portion of the fans in the singing section come from Ireland. It's been the case for many generations. I'd also point to the fact when United are in pre-season the global reach of the club comes into focus.

I would say United are a global team based in Manchester.

Why would he care more about transfers and signings than results on the pitch? Because of where he’s from? What else did you judge it on?
its ok trying to retcon it as local v foreign when your post wasn’t addressing that at all.
Let’s be honest. Everyone knows it was a feck up, there’s no point in twisting in the wind about it.

Because if you’re celebrating the ownership of a club you’re more interested in the off the field stuff?

There are a lot fans outside of Manchester who are extremely passionate about the club. I'm not surprised at their annoyance. Sure, we've got loads of casual followers too on social media, but I'd hate to have my support questioned because I lived in Tashkent without knowing how passionate I was. That said I think @Pogue Mahone alluded to locals having a different connection, which is probably right. There is a lot of civic pride but the notion of superiority is a bit insecure.

Am I superior as a fan who regularly goes to games over someone who doesn’t?

Yes.

One could argue its folk like you who kept lining the Glazers pockets all this time to allow them to keep hemorrhaging money from the club up until the point they bled it dry and had to sell it on.

So in a roundabout way, we're gonna end up owned by Qatar and its mostly your fault

I'm sure many of us don't want our own countries to buy any football club at all because we don't think that's the sort of thing our country should be focusing or spending money on. I'd actually wince if my country (well I have 2 but either really) tried to buy one, here we are privatizing railways, electricity, airports, all sorts of other infrastructure, but lets have our government run a football club (not even in our own country!)...

This thread shows that it's a contentious topic but in my book football clubs come from a place, a community, they have a heritage. And being a fan of a club to some extent comes with supporting that, even if you aren't from there, or only get to go there once a decade or so. I don't really buy into anyone being a lesser fan or the better fan, we're all just fans. But it's not like a football club is like any other kind of commodity either.

I 100% get their annoyance at having this pointed out.
However, your post like many others are doing what I’m doing. You see that locals / match goers have a different connection, it just feels uncomfortable for you to say.

Good to know.

But the fans out of Manchester are just as important. They're the ones who allow all this money to come into United and be one of the top spenders. They are the ones who are included when the club goes to negotiate the multimillion pound deals.

The "unlocal" supporters are the one who have helped make the Premier League the best football league in the world. Without these supporters, Manchester United would not be who they are today.

I don’t care about being a top spender or United having the top sponsors.

yeah I’d be fuming if the English government or the Queen purchased United.

Fans who attend games regularly are more important fans. And (for obvious reasons) they will tend to be local fans too. So it's absolutely fine to argue that local fans are more important, even before you take into account what being from Manchester actually means to the club itself.

But it doesn't then follow that every local fan is superior to other fans. Because that individual can be a lesser fan for other reasons.

For example, a scumbag piece of shit who engages in thuggery, sings songs about Hillsborough, racially abuses players online, is an idiot when it comes to actually understanding football but happens to be local isn't a superior Manchester United fan than someone from thousands of miles away who is devoted to the club, commits more time and money in their irregular attendances, understands football and conducts themselves in a way that reflects well on the club. Absolutely nobody, club included, would prefer to jettison the latter from the fanbase over the former.

Cracking post.

I really hope a hedge fund comes in to save the Glazers. Then we can all go up on a hill singing "Que Sera Sera" with the #GlazersOut signs instead of all the needless squabbling and division.

You have a million posts in this thread as well. I’d bet a lot more posts than the poster you quoted.
Where’s the logic there? Is his caring less important than your caring?
Has your support of the club lessened with every owner related post you’ve made?

It's just not a nice way to feel, Wummy. There is a different connection but so what? Surely it only matters how passionate you are?

@Wumminator

You mention you inherently have a right to love United more because you're from Manchester. However, when @Abdullah7 says he would be delighted if the Qataris took over the club due to his family/clan connections you question his geography
But- doesn’t geography make someone a lesser fan Sultan? If it doesn’t- why are they called Manchester United?
No

I would say its name is due to the club being based in Manchester. I hope you live in Old Trafford or I would say you're a lesser fan.

It was initially not called Manchester United.

"Please keep it civil and constructive"

Haha posters in here going off the rails and mods just sitting by whistling...

Am I superior as a fan who regularly goes to games over someone who doesn’t?

Yes.

Are there other fans who are superior to me?

Absolutely.

No you are just lucky you can get to more games regularly, it is not superior, it’s just luck that you have the opportunity to do so and that it’s maybe more difficult for others.

I don’t live in England but have been supporting United sinds the late ‘80s, have watched them in Manchester and in London, but also in Holland, Denmark, France and Spain. Have been to the Champions League final in Barcelona in ‘99.

I wish I could go to more games but it is very expensive, sometimes difficult to get tickets (I think even for people in England and the greater Manchester area) and I have my family life. That doesn’t make me less of a fan than you.
