Devils advocate, but maybe they just didn’t see value in the sponsorship and it wasn’t ownership related?

People actually think Saudis were going to sponsor our shirt, for multiple years, just so that CR7 would wear the Manchester United shirt for 6 months, with Suadi Travel on the front?
No. They think that due to signing the biggest brand in football for 200m a year they no longer have a need to sponsor us to sell holidays.

Saudis have to continue to "legitimize" their investments, along with Ronaldo.

PSG has Neymar, held onto Mbappe, and then acquired Messi. They also have a nice creative relationship with Nike.

I dont think the Saudis are done investing into sport, especially football. Their next steps are to invest in a club(s) and then a major competition like UEFA- CL, Euros, etc.

They could also still invest significantly into United, with first right of refusal to buy more ownership or out right takeover within the next year or so.

And by entertaining one of the biggest sponsorship opportunities in the world, the Saudis were able to have a seat at the table and learn a lot about the club from a business POV. if you're the lead partner of the club, as majority of shirt sponsors are, you get to peek under the hood a lot more than others....while remaining hidden/quiet as a potential ownership candidate.

Genuine question then, if this is the case, then they would have known before negotiations even started that Ronaldo had no chance of been at United come the end of the season, most probably gone before the sponsorship even started, so not only would they have not had the Ronaldo link at United (if that was so important), they would have known they always had a very good chance of taking him to Saudi if they were willing to throw that sort of money at him.

Yeah. That’s exactly what it means. That’s exactly what we’re saying. You haven’t extrapolated something to an extreme there at all.
No, I didn't think so. It ties in with the theory that they pulled out of the sponsorship, due to CR7 signing for a Saudi club.

Maybe they’ve reevaluate the value of it now they’ve sealed the Ronaldo deal? Why would the club start negotiating and be set to sign a sponsorship deal this week with Saudi Arabia if Qatar/Dubai are about to buy us? The tweet says they pulled out not us. If we were about to be bought by a Saudi rival we’d be pulling out surely?

Tbf we have no idea when we first intiated the chance of them sponsoring us, it did say the deal was supposed be signed this week, but that doesn't really tell us much about the timeline before.

We also don't know when they pulled out, and obviously if that was purely to do with Ronaldo (which does seem fair fetched), or if was something else that mainly stopped it happening, the most simple of which is us been for sale, and it doesn't have to be Qatar/Dubai, I'd very much doubt Ratcliffe would want them as sponsors either, or plently of other would be buyers.

It’s all conjecture. But we know it was before the World Cup. We know it was whilst Ronaldo played for us as his image is on the presentation. And we know team viewer have been having doubts for a few months. So I don’t think it takes miss marple to figure out the meeting likely occurred October/November.

And again - the tweet is saying THEY pulled out. Not Manchester United. So I fail to see how it has anything to do with our new owners not wanting them sponsoring us. If we take those tweets as the truth I’m struggling to see who our new owners could be that would be fine with the Saudis as sponsors but at the same time their very ownership would make the Saudis pull out. The far more likely explanation is they pulled out because they no longer saw value in it for some reason - and it has nothing to do with new owners. That reason is just guesswork - but again - someone Saudi side has leaked this saying a contract due to be signed this week is now no longer happening (why would we leak that to a Saudi news sauce?) on the same day they’ve signed Ronaldo and I doubt the two have no connection considering the very reason he’s being paid 200m a year will be to promote Saudi Arabia - the same reason they’d want to sponsor us. It’s now official - he’s signed:

What if the Saudis told Ronnie they’re buying United and if all goes well he can come back next year where we’re hopefully playing in the CL????

If that is true it's a shame we didn't sack him after the WC. Well...after we signed the Air Saudia deal.

Everybody seems confident if a q1 sale. There must be some solid interest.

We really do argue a lot over micro analysis of a Tweet don’t we

Ronaldo intentionally force the timelines with the release of the interview. He knew the owners has to react -- anyone would. It was way to toxic to wait that long.

Only a case of waiting after the WC rather than before. But heh all hindsight and conjecture.

The last thing Qatari owners would want is Saudi Arabia plastered front and centre on the shirt.

Done deal, Qataris in by Monday.

So you reckon this is the first sign we could be owned by someone who doesn't like anything related to Saudi Arabia

I have no clue how a takeover works....

That being said.... if the owners to be, wanted to buy the club for billions in the near future, could they not just instruct the Glazers to sign certain players and add it to the bill/assets as part of the deal to buy the club?

Thinking about an Enzo Fernandez type deal. Or would they just have zero say so or input until a deal was closed.

Just to get up to speed with this all as I’ve not been following this closely but judging by the last few pages - I take it’s between either the Saudi’s or the Qatari’s with David Beckham involved as to who purchases this club from the glazers?

You would lose leverage in your negotiation.

That would be risky. What if the deal fell through at the last minute? Then the club would be saddled with an expensive player who may not have been their preferred choice otherwise.

The owners won’t just buy a player unless it’s who the manager wants aswell.

There are some who still believe the Glazers are selling due to that interview with Piers!

I will defend most United players (United = religion, near blind faith) until they slag off the club. Ronaldo has disrespected the club way too many times now. Doesn't deserve much in return

What I would have done if I was in charge of United and knowing I'm in line to make major money in a couple of months to a half a year is the following:

  1. Assume they haven't got any of their own money
  2. Given the stock price has risen so much to be more in line with their sale valuation, selling stock before the actual sale is not that big of deal.
  3. With that said, I'd sell a million or two shares and instead of buying another boat and mansion, I'd leave the money with the club.
  4. This would have been enough to buy us Gakpo and maybe a RB which for me is what we need in Jan to ensure we don't miss on CL next season as well and get our Adidas deal cut

Wholeheartedly agree. He never "loved" United. He never come back to watch us play after he left for Real! And let's not forget how many times he used us for an improved contract.

You could use some of the money collected in player fines to put towards the kitty?

Always find it hilarious when people say that as it's something completely from a fantasy world. $50m is not some spare change in your pocket, I don't know why people tend to think that if someone is a billionaire, they can just "leave" millions wherever they feel like. That's not how those people made billions. You would need to be completely stupid to invest money into something you will sell in a couple of months, I don't get the logic for that at all.
