In all fairness Simon Jordan has been banging the drum on TalkSPORT for years that teams with their own TV platforms should look at streaming PPV their own matches. Something I can see happening in the not too far distance, image how much revenue United would generate globally.

It’s just one sub. You pay for what you want. It’s an excellent idea.

I agree. Honestly I'd like to pay a subscription for MUTV and we watch all our games there with Man united negotiating the away games on our behalf. I can't care less about watching crystal Palace vs West ham

That's all well and good until you end up with noone to play against.

The only downside is that the less popular clubs will be in a vicious cycle of not being able to compete.
Clubs like united arsenal and Liverpool have been the reverse RM and Barca where we are subsidising the other clubs instead of getting paid more than others. (Its the popularity of these clubs that pulling the other clubs along.)

No one will watch the smaller clubs.

It’s one of the major obstacles. 16 out of 20 clubs have to vote for it. Until you get a sharing formula that the smaller clubs are happy with, it’s not going to happen.

They will still money from the away games. I fail to understand why so much money is spent on smaller clubs. Some can't even be bothered to play attractive football

Maybe the threat of a European super league will make them more reasonable

That threat is effectively dead.

Not in Europe. If the new owners make way more money playing European clubs then English ones then they might flip especially clubs like our with their huge debt. Let's see the EPL making money with a Palace vs West ham game then

There has to be some hybrid model that can be developed -- like under a collective agreement under the PL umbrella within the UK since it will serve and subsidise the local smaller markets/communities. But direct to consumers/fans outside the UK.

Otherwise, it's a bit unfair to the bigger clubs who have a much heavy cost base to bear.

I'd rather play the likes of Southampton than Real every week. Those Euro matches are just a cherry on top. But there's something special about domestic rivalries.

That’s only because the likes of Barca and Juventus are desperate for cash. Barca in particular. Serie A also has its own issues.

The concept is dead to English clubs though for now.

If Real, Barca, juve, inter and Milan switch then clubs will have to make their homework especially if the money involved dwarfs that made by the EPL. Then you might have an argument between the big guns and the EPL some of the former literally owned by sovreign nations while others by huge US investors eith probable ties with the white house. Would saudi, Qatar and the UAE be happy with the UK saying no?

I can see a similar scenario to what we had in the European cup/WC with British clubs entering late in the competition. Alternatively the EPL tv deal will need to be renegotiated to put more money in the pockets of those who feed every one
Hopefully we don't see another farce Cup being created like the carling cup

No one would watch a ESL without the Prem clubs. Since the PL is already a super league it won't happen. Let's hope we stay away.

The EPL is popular but so are clubs like Real and Barca. Ultimately money talks. It always did

This is the same fantastic logic Madrid and barca used to keep all tv money for themselves for so many years, has worked out brilliantly for la Liga hasn't it.

Probably because you’d end up with leagues like Germany, France and Spain, uncompetitiv!!

The conversation on the last couple of pages is depressing. The reason the PL is what it is the equal distribution of money.

Change that and the league becomes shite, which is a fast track to a Super League. The money clubs like United earn has to be shared or it'll become another farmer's league and then what's the point.

Exactly this.

Coming from a former British colony and having travelled to many others, I think some underestimate the interest in the English game for cultural reasons.
I have no doubt in my mind the premier league would still be a juggernaut even if the rest of Europe created a Super League. And I am convinced the rest of Europe know this. I can’t see a Super League without the English clubs.

The same people who want this were against the European super league.
Make up your mind because if all the "smaller" clubs get a lot less money and all the bigger clubs get lots more, then the domestic league is finished and we might as well go super league right now.

The win at all costs mentality sickens me

Think they should just get rid of the 3.00 oclock blackout, so one game can be shown live at that time. Three games on a Saturday, make it three on a Sunday and if not a European week, or teams that aren't in Europe can be shown on a Monday. Hell have a Friday night game as well, most leagues do. That will be eight games over a weekend.

Impressive how quiet it's been. Biggest 'news' in weeks was a reporter announcing Ratcliffe hired someone who he has worked with throughout the entire process and attended the Old Trafford visit.

Yeah keep thinking calm before the storm

Its a natural progression of an antiquated business model -- moving towards a sharing economy where you cut out the middleman. The technology has been there for nearly a decade.

This will either force the traditional broadcasters to pay up more (to the PL) without raising the monthly subs and use Football as a loss leader for their other programmes or they will have to be some outsource partner to the PL where they provide their TV production or bandwidth/infra expertise.

Imagine only just 10 million United fans around the world (out of supposedly 400 million global fans) paying $10/mo (or more) to watch all of United's matches. Do the math.

This will be the longtail pitch the Glazers will offer Jassion/INEOS. No need for the Super League.

Is there a chance the PL put a cap on money distributed to the clubs in case this goes through?

I was overwhelmed with messages so I apologise for not answering one by one. Here are my thoughts

- the super league was meant to give more money to the big guns. That is achieved by cutting middle men (ex uefa) and creating a super competitive league against clubs with huge fan bases

- in Europe the project was postponed rather then killed off

- the EPL is the biggest league in the world but it relies heavy on the big guns which are often on the losing side of every decision making.

- the top EPL clubs are a financial/fan magnet but so are Barca, Real and to a lesser extent the likes of juve and inter. They can organise such tournament without the EPL clubs

- if the super league promises way more money to the likes of United then the EPL does then they will have a decision to make. Usually money talks.

- the EPL might find themselves fighting against owners (ex saudi, Qatar, rich US investors with links to the white house etc) that have more political clout in the UK then them

Quite frankly I think that top epl clubs will use that situation to wrestle more money and control over the EPL. Considering that the EPL relies on just 4-5 big clubs then its silly that everyone has an equal say as decisions are usually taken against the bread winners interest. However it all depends on how much money the super league will generate. As said money talks

Well, nothing wrong with winning at all costs as long as winning means something. If we'll be winners in the equivalent of an Audi Cup league, who cares and then I'd move on to other sports.

I do agree the subs madness needs to stop and also I hate the fact streaming is becoming the prevalent mode of delivery nowadays. It's awkward, often subpar and also always delayed.

Where I currently live, all PL games are on this streaming platform and even though you can watch all games if you sub, it's bloody 720p, let alone 1080p or 4K. There's no app for the smart TV which means that you need to cast it and it also means watching multiple games is an absolute chore.
