liverpool have made a few good signings now themselves, firminho and now benteke, while also managing to get city to pay nearly 50 mil gbp for sterling.

Liverpool's signings will cement them in 5th place. They've made progress of a sort, but not enough to laud their dealings in the transfer window.

They got 44 million upfront. 20 percent of which goes to qpr which leaves them with 35 million. 32. 5 of which goes to benteke. Not that good when you look on it like that in my opnion.

I'm not so sure. They've made decent signings but aside from Coutinho, they don't, for me anyway, have any stand out players. They probably should take 5th, but I wouldn't be surprised to see Spurs or Southampton or even both finish ahead of them.

you're right. that's why I was careful with my words and didn't say Liverpool got nearly 50 mil from city which isn't true because of what you said.

After ripping off Man City for Sterling, they just got ripped off in turn for the signing of Benteke. Some stupidly high transfer fees for so average players :wenger:

Reckon he'll do a good job for them. Decent signing.

32 million is on the steep side, but then we paid similar money to bring Fellaini to OT.

They paid 35 for Caroll not so long ago don't forget.. Sometimes you just have to pay it as he's still the best that would join Pool at this stage.

I'm not convinced by him really, seemed to need to entire team set up to feed him at Villa. I think he'll do alright for them but definitely don't see him being a Suarez/Torres for them.

So far I think Milner is probably their best acquisition but it;s not like there were a host of CL clubs trying to get him. Their biggest problem is that if they don't hit the ground running BRod is going to be under immense pressure.

£32.5m? The dippers are off the wall when it comes to the fees they pay. This is going to be another great laugh.

Soton are still to replace the players they sold and Spurs are Spurs, they will always feck it in the end.

As of now I think with their transfer business they are better than last year.

What I like most about this transfer is that with Benteke joining Delph and Vlaar through the exit, Villa have basically lost the entire spine of their team.

Can't stand that club, or Sherwood, so hopefully they go down this year.

This is why I dont agree with the PL will dominate claims. Teams will get richer but they'll just keep overpaying for 'PL proven players'. Have Borini, Balotelli and Lambert left already by the way?

Other than that Benteke is a good striker and excellent when he's in form, dont think he fits at Liverpool though as they dont really play with crosses and dont really lump balls into the box.

I think he'll be a good signing for them - he's proven over 3 seasons in the Premier League. I don't mind though as long as we sign an even better striker.

I suppose part of the reason they brought in Benteke was for that very reason - bringing in a "proven Premier League goalscorer" so that he can hit the ground running. Likewise with Milner and Clyne. Not convinced that's a particularly good strategy though. In previous transfer windows under Rodgers they've bought Allen, Sturridge, Mignolet, Toure, Moses, Lambert, Lallana and Lovren. The only one that's really hit the ground running and had an instant impact is Sturridge, and the rest have been fairly mediocre throughout their time. I'm not convinced Benteke's any different to Lallana. Decent players who can play their part in the squad but are unlikely to establish themselves as fixtures in the team going forward. That's an awful lot of money to spend on long-term squad players in their mid-20s.

Benteke is class in the right system, but I am not sure hes adaptable enough to play as anything else. So either Brentan will change the way they play, or this is another bibotelli situation where they have a player that can never be at his best for them because of the system (although bibo has other issues as well obviously).

Massive price for him, but if it works out they won't care.

I think they have made some pretty good signings. Milner is underrated, Clyne is good enough for most teams, Benteke can be brilliant.

Still think their team is just short of the top bracket of teams though. They might finish 4th at a stretch.

I think he's got the ability to score 20 goals a season but he's nothing special. We could have gone for the safe option with him but I'd rather we sign someone who can reach the heights of some of our best strikers in the last 20 years.

It's a bit amusing how they talk about United's tactics being about route one football, hitting long balls to Fellaini. To get the best out of Benteke that's basically how they'll need to use him.

Buy a goalkeeper who's shit with the ball at his feet, despite the manager wanting to play out from the back: The Liverpool way
Buy Benteke and put him in a side that doesn't make crosses: The Liverpool way
Call Sterling the best young and player in Europe and then offer him less than Ashley Young: The Liverpool way
Buy Mario Balotelli on the basis that you'll 'change him': The Liverpool way

how does that first line make sense?

surely you have to be better than nothing special to get 20 goals at the top level?!

they are in severe difficulty.

their comments when Delph originally said he was staying were really strong. You worry how they'll recover from such a body blow.
They should have worked swiftly on sorting a contract that wiped that £8m clause out, that would have really put him under pressure with all the big talk of loyalty.
Instead they left it open and got their pants pulled down straight after.

Oh well, they've got Micah Richards. He'll be popular from the off with his rumoured part in the Delph situation

20 goals a season is around 1 goal every 2 games, nowadays you see the top strikers having close to 1 goal per game ratio. Aguero with 32 in 40, Suarez with 31 in 33 during his last season, van Nistelrooy with 44 goals in 52 games for us and van Persie during his best 2 seasons scoring 37 goals and 30 in the following season. Now that's special. We need this type of striker.

Diego Costa managed 20 goals in just 26 appearances for Chelsea in the league while struggling with fitness.

These players are not easily available.

Fair enough purchase, I'd say. We'll see how he turns out for them. I partly agree that he doesn't seem like an absolutely ideal fit given how they'll presumably line up - but then again I think people underestimate his quality to an extent. He's more versatile than some make it out.

Price is what it is - could hardly expect them to get a player like that from an English club at some kind of bargain rate. And who should they rather have gone for? What obtainable target would have been significantly better/safer?

Unlike Brenda's latest striker purchases, this one will not be a disaster - that much is clear. He'll do well enough in all likelihood.

The Belgian James Beattie - thank God LVG knows what he's doing and didn't entertain the idea of signing him. An idiot like Moyes would have paid the release.

Isn't he EPl proven and did well for Villa?

He will get goals. It's a lot of money but it's hard to see what other proven Premier League strikers you'd get for it.

Sometimes you get the feeling that a signing is the right one. This one seems like it for Liverpool. He'll be more useful to them than Sterling would have been I feel, so I'd say they've done well. 32.5mil is a bit steep, but if he gets them 20 odd goals, it'll all be forgotten quickly.

If Fellaini played up front for Villa all season he'd probably return as many if not more goals than Benteke.

The most important player benteke is going to depend on is origi. If he is back & can supply crosses; benteke will be successful.

The thus far horrible markovic can become better if they have a target man too.
Origi? The kid striker they signed is going to be the most important factor in the success of a 32 million pound striker?
