It is claimed today in the media that we have scouted him intensively. Furthermore, we need a striker with RVP and Falcao going and other options such as Benzema, Kane and Muller looking very difficult.

Like most, my initial reaction is "we need better". I have had a look at his underlying stats for last season and, whilst I agree that stats are not everything, they are surprisingly good despite playing in a very ordinary team.

That said, I would still hope for someone better.

Considering any striker we get would presumably be a 'second' striker behind (in terms of starting games) rooney, i think benteke would be excellent for that role.

I usually couldn't care a less how much money we spend on a player as it's not my money, but cant believe we'd sirens 32m on him to be a second striker, the price tag would always weig him down.

Saying that, didn't city waste 30m on bony?

Well his stats are good. He's not clumsy. He's a big strong player that can run. I always think of Yorke who's stats weren't great at Villa but when he played with better players, he became a better player. Benteke will score goals at any of the big clubs. Jose perhaps will regret going for Falcao. I don't know if his stats on wiki are legit, but Bentekes numbers look good.

Just to add, in a better team i'm sure Benteke would improve. So the question becomes how much could he improve? Well he's mid 20's so he's not in his prime yet.

I think he is a proper 9 and would improve us if not only in options up front. I'd say he's got a bit more about him than lukaku in his overall game, less than Kane though (based on last season). Would be OK with him coming in. With the rest of people coming in, he'd bring the balance LVG always talks about.

I know he isn't a snail, but I'd prefer someone with more pace. He'd definitely give us a massive aerial threat and good hold up play, but I still think he can be a bit wasteful and I imagine Benteke off his day is the type of day you do not want to be alive to watch a football match.

If cheap, then he wouldn't be a bad shout but you just know Villa will ask for £25million minimum.

Not for £30m, hes a good player but for that price I would want a better player. Berahino wouldn't be a bad shout for a backup option.

He is a good option, but with Lacazette costing around the same amount, i would probably prefer him. Benteke is still someone to keep an eye on. I d rather him than Lukaku.

Wouldn't mind him at all. Good finisher, physically a beast and wouldn't complain about being second fiddle to Rooney

On Harry Kane I said that hes not worth anywhere close to the fees being mentioned, and with Benteke that's even more the case. I haven't anything from him to suggest that his game can be anywhere near being as well rounded as is required as Manchester United. Maybe I haven't seen enough, but I'd prefer having kept RVP to be honest.

If were actually going to overpay excessively for a striker that isn't really top notch, I'd rather go for Harry Kane. Because unlike Benteke he has looked intelligent to me in his build up play, like the game against Chelsea, for example, which was a great all round performance.

Think the more likely target is Lukaku if I'm honest. Would be cheaper and he's been spouting off a lot recently

Lots of rumous on Villa-sites that both him and Delph could be sold this weekend - but as Delph did an U-turn and stayed - maybe there were nothing in the Benteke-rumours. I would be happy if we signed him.

Wouldn't mind signing him. Gives us something different up front. And more realistic than some of these strikers being thrown around in here.

Are we starting a new thread for every bullshit Sunday rumour now?

Also "the media" doesn't constitute a source, OP should contain source references.

I don't rate him that much. Would prefer keeping Hernandez as second striker rather than spending 30m on Benteke. If we are going to spend that much money on a striker then Lacazette should be the answer. Or add an extra 10m and go for Kane.

Wouldn't be against this signing. Liverpool will probably snap him up

Who runs the red cafe Twitter btw?

This. Except the lacazette bit. Haven't seen him but hear he's very good.

With the arrival of Bastian, hopefully Schneirderlin and a top quality CB and who knows maybe decent money spent on a keeper, I would be looking more to a back up striker for Rooney rather than a world class player who would demand first team football. So in that regard, I would take Benteke, no doubt. However, for 30+m, no thanks. Drop it to 20 and I think it's great business.

I expect him to join Liverpool or even Arsenal before us though.

Benteke doesn't have good link up/hold up play as evidenced by the Fa cup final. I don't doubt he's a goal scorer but I doubt that he could fit into our side. Have been proven wrong before though!

Said it before on here this summer, this wouldn't surprise me. Van Gaal said more than once last season he thought we weren't strong enough physically. Benteke would help that. He's also at an age where he can improve.

A striker's main job is to find the net of course but Benteke would also help defensively at set pieces where van Persie used to do a very good job defending the near post.

I'm not against it myself.

Kane>Lacazette>Benteke

First is not for sale, we are not in for the second (apparently but who knows), the third would be too expensive I guess but proven goalscorer. He would bring the balance and would score a lot of goals from Memphis/Youngs/diMarias crosses, we wouldn't need Fellaini anymore. He's interesting player. Don't think he's slower than Rooney, balance and strong hold up play, our game would look different.

Let's see how this turns out, we may wait on Kane and for next year and stick with Wilson/Depay/Januzaj/Fellaini... quite risky but not unplayable..

Benteke could be acquired in January if anything..

I would be happy with this transfer. He is pretty young and will improve on his current level which is already good. He is not going to make us a force but would be a good addition if we are looking for competition for Rooney.

He'll be a perfect fit for our system but I am not sure about his linkup play and overall quality. His goal scoring record is pretty good though.

A journalist who has nothing to say links us with Benteke because we scouted him?

Agree with this.

Also imagine bringing him and Fellaini on as super subs and the chaos they could cause.

He's also been linked with us in today's Sun and also by a Times journalist.

Is it you? Sorry, I assumed the robot would have dealt with that!

It's half me and half Damo. He does the good work though. All the unfunny and random comments are by me.

No way. Benteke is not a starting quality striker for a top European team. His build up play is decent and he's a well rounded player, but for £30 million or thereabouts (which is what Villa will demand), we should be targeting a young striker who can become one of the best around when Rooney eventually drops off, and lead the clubs on both the domestic and European front. A developing version Benzema or Lewandowski, a player of that sort. And Benteke is far removed from that level. Every other season we see players who are labelled 'beasts' and can score 15 goals or thereabouts for some of the smaller Premier League clubs, and guesstimate their level in a side with better team-mates, but it almost never works out. Not an exact science but the likes of Darren Dent, Andy Johnson, Demba Ba, Wilfried Bony among several others are all testament to that and kind of flopped after their big moves. Benteke's record through the past 2 seasons, and general skill-level is almost identical to those players before their moves to bigger clubs, and that's not what we should be targeting going forward.

Rather give more minutes to Wilson who has all the potential in the world. Might backfire a bit, but you have to trust academy players and give them the chance to shine. Signing an above average squad option like Benteke will just take away developmental time from Wilson, and hamper his growth. Even if he sinks and doesn't develop well enough, the squad can be supplmented by better options. Then there are the likes of Kane who in his first full season at Tottenham showed more quality that Benteke did over the same period, not necessarily goalscoring either but his technique, movement inside the box, and general link-up play; plus he is 3 years younger, and provided he stays focussed on the game, has the potential to be one of the best #9s around. That's aside from even the likes of Lacazette, Paco, Berardi or Milik who have more potential for the future.
