Chido Obi | 2024/25 Performances

A few really bright moments from Obi today, obviously still really green and in normal circumstances shouldn't be anywhere near the first team, but yeah, far from normal circumstances. Keep brining him off the bench as see how it goes.

Looks more of a threat than Hojlund but clearly quite some way off the level, as you'd expect at 17.
But should at least get a regular run out as sub the rest of this season to gain experience and make sure we don't absolutely run Hojlund into even less effective displays.

Didn’t touch the ball basically in that first 90 after coming on. Looked very timid and not even working that hard but something happened in extra time as all of a sudden he looked alive. Should have finished the chance DeLigt laid on for him mind but yeah looked promising in extra time.

Just back from the game, looked nervous which was to be expected. Clearly he's still learning the game but I think he will score goals once he finds his feet.

You can tell he's never been the greatest footballer but he's an amazing goalscorer at youth level. It's about getting the best out of him for now without stunting his development. Personally I could see the first team players instructing him around the field and encouraging him.

He should have gone down when he tangled with Bassey in the area. Then he used his pace to create himself a chance which was well saved by Leno.

I'd be tempted to start him against Sociedad just because Hojlund offers nothing.

I thought Obi was anonymous the whole time he was on.

He just looks more suited to the men’s game.

I think so. Better than recently anyway ( from a low base granted)

I don’t think he did. He was largely anonymous for me.

So because my opinion differs to yours I am trolling/wum?

All hail Santeria13, self proclaimed lord and god of all things United on the internet.

Nope.

fair. For me that’s a confidence thing, but I agree he needs to keep it simple.

Anonymous? He had 3 good chances which apparently is the same as Hojlund, but in 22 games less.

Just not ready and I'm reluctant to say play him more because I know people will start getting on his back if he keeps missing chances and goes several games without scoring.

Chido Obi: 52 minutes, 18 touches, 4 passes, 3 shots.

Hojlund: 68 minutes, 9 touches, 2 passes, 1 shot.

Really think he should get more minutes this season. First and foremost since I remember arguing with @golden_blunder over whether he would get minutes for the senior team this season.

he's not quite ready, but.. still offers something we don't have

he's definitely gonna be getting more minutes this season

The way I feel now, he still doesn’t look really ready but the others offer no threat going forward so may as well chuck him some minutes

This pretty much. The lad still looks very raw. Understandably so. But Hojlund offers absolutely nothing at the minute. And Zirkzee not much more so why not.

I do understand the cries to throw him in because of the lack of options, but we should also be careful. He needs to be allowed to develop, and I'm not sure throwing him up front in a struggling team, when he's very obviously not ready, would be a good approach to take.

Found himself with 2-3 goalscoring opportunities. Which is more than Hojlund is currently doing.

Rawness is clear but I’d be keeping him on the bench for Sociedad and bringing him on after the hour mark if needed

He doesn't look ready yet, but he got himself in good positions and looks physically strong for his age. Since the season is fecked anyway It'd be great if we could give him more minutes. Certainly feels like he has a better chance scoring than Hojlund does.

I agree with this.
Expectations are so low anyway.

In an ideal world he'd be doing small cameo appearances in games we were comfortably winning

Unfortunately we have 2 woeful strikers (one more so than the other who can at least be utilised elsewhere on the pitch) so are we going to be forced to use him

He at least got himself into some decent positions and looked to be starting to grow into the game as it progressed.

The league is basically a write off so could we perhaps give him some minutes in that. Shame we don't have a Zlatan type who could work with him, but then if we did have one of those we wouldn't be in the position of him feeling like our only hope. Everyone could see we needed a striker in January, but because we kept ETH on and allowed him to waste more money in the summer, we couldn't get one, so are left relying on this guy.

I'm glad he didn't take a penalty, didn't want him to potentially miss and destroy his confidence before he's even got started

It says a lot about Rasmus that this guy is still incredibly raw, that he looked more threatening than him. He looked stronger in his body too.

As said in an ideal world, we wouldn't be forced to rely on him but I think we are going to have to. Maybe alternate his games, so for each one he gets some first team action, he then has a game in the under 21s to work on any feedback/build his confidence. It's also down to our coaches to properly manage him, we should be showing him videos after the performances and explaining to him what he needs to do differently next time, so it's a learning experience for him. Having seen how our players stagnate or even go backwards im not entirely convinced we do this

How would it ruin him

He's capable of getting some minutes ahead of Hojlund.
He's not ready to start, 15-20 min cameos is what he should be getting, Hojund only starts because there's no one else

We’d be as well as letting him start in the league. Our league seasons basically over. I couldn’t care less if we finished 10th or 16th.

He looked far better than Hojlund.

Nervous understandably but certainly grew into the game...
Yeah thought he looked more comfy the more the game went on.
But does look like we're getting strikers who are learning the role (understandable with him) whilst playing up top for us which is insane

Well there's Chido who looks like he may offer more. If he's better than Hojlund he's ready to start.

He just killed the fallacious narrative about Hojlund and the lack of service. He is a real 9 it’s so obvious when you look at his movement. Even bullied Bassey at one point.

Hojlund must be sold asap.

That bit where he nudged Bassey off the ball and got a shot away, I mean how refreshing it is to see our centre forward do that? Took him a while but once he got the taste, he was a presence. Promising.

Yeah, he is not ready. Needs more time to develop out of the spotlight.

Just because he is better than Hojlund, doesn't mean he should play now because we have to think long term with him.

Even a 25 year old from Eredivise or Serie A need time to adjust to the tempo of the PL. Chido is new to senior football. Yes, it might take a bit of time.

But my point with Obi was always that we likely gave him a promise of a route into the senior team. And if he do well this spring, I would not be surprised if he is our second choice striker next season.

If he scored that chance he had then most people would be wanting him starting the next games…

There's some fundamentals in his game which he doesn't have. However as a pure striker, there's real potential. He's going to be a complete bully as he gets older, and he's already got very good movement.

He didn't take his chances today, but judging by his record that's one of his biggest strengths.

Chido Obi: 52 minutes, 18 touches, 4 passes, 3 shots.

Hojlund: 68 minutes, 9 touches, 2 passes, 1 shot.
That’s crazy. I think we’ll carry on seeing him from the bench for a bit, I doubt Amorim will chuck him in against Sociedad or Arsenal, but then again, we know what happened to Rashford in the Europa and against Arsenal.

Physically I’d be a worried about him starting regularly, it’s such a young age to jump to mens football, but Amorim doesn’t seem like he’s willing to flog players like Ten Hag did At times.

No, he will look after him and the other young lads. He was excellent at developing the youngsters at Sporting, where he gave debuts and brought along some fine talent.

Hojlund: 68 minutes, 9 touches, 2 passes, 1 shot.
Those stats are grim reading on both counts… I think you’re making the point that he was more involved than Hojlund, but having hold of the ball 18 times and completing 4 passes (4 passes from 15 accounting for shots) is poor. He’s in the first team vying for a place as the starting striker. He’s should be judged accordingly.

Then you come to those Hojlund stats. Holy moly.

Surely there must be a free agent we can sign up top

He did well, but the game inevitably opens up in the later stages and Hojlund coming on as sub in the 2nd half would probably result in better stats too.

Of course, there's no senior option available to allow him to do that.

Rather him miss chances than whatever the other two are up to. Also, fouled in the box twice—once he didn’t go down, the other his standing leg was kicked out from underneath him on the turn. Even though neither came to anything, no one is fouling Rasmus in the box. No need

I was worried for his first 10-15 mins where he basically didn’t touch the ball, but he really grew into the game. At a minimum he has the natural instincts of a no.9 unlike Hojlund and Zirkzee.

I don’t think starting him is the answer, but he should certainly be getting 10-20 minutes regularly for the remainder of the season.
