Chess discussions

On a side note, I totally agree with Carlsen and the format of the World Championship should be modernized with the inclusion of other time controls.

I wonder if any of you have an idea about you would like it to be?
We already have blitz and rapid world championship, so it's a question whether they should be rolled in one tournament. Perhaps they should rename the tournament to World Classical Champion and keep it classical.

I don't mind the current format it's still entertaining.

I missed the game, but
that blunder was just a pure blunder, right? Not forced from time pressure or the position, right? There's a million good moves, and no need to trade, and he had 10 minutes left?

I know that there is already world championships, there is a also World Cup in classical which is pretty much the equivalent to the other time formats. The point is to have a world championship match that represents all of Chess; at least that's how I understood Carlsen's wish.

Of course there is a case to have both but to me it makes little sense when all the time formats have a competition that crowns a world champion and Classical has two competitions.

Bit of everything i think, i think he also got a bit complacent and frustrated as he was really trying to force the draw but Gukesh just kept the game going. Ding has been pretty inconsistent throughout the match, some games he made all the right moves but he's also had moments where he made some serious blunders and at this level it's really costly. I think he's done now, clearly not the player he once was.

Looking at things in context though, if you look at his awful form before the match he's played a lot better than expected, most were predicting a Gukesh walk over.

I wouldn't be against keeping the classical then doing a separate all format championship instead of the world cup.

I think because of the history and prestige behind the current format they wouldn't want to change it too much.

No, the World Cup is a brilliant competition, it would be terrible to get rid of it and it also makes no sense because it makes a lot more sense to have a world cup for all time formats. The oddity is the World Championship, now you can keep it and create an all format World Cup match but it shouldn't be at the expense of a competition that actually makes sense and is brilliant, in my opinion it has the best format.

The only reason I hate the FIDE world cup is that it gives 3 spots to the candidates tournaments. Should be two tops.

Magnus Carlsen just got DQ'd from World Champs for wearing jeans.

Honestly feck FIDE.

he was given a warning, told to change (he had a 50 minute gap to do this, with his hotel 5 minutes away), refused, then they forfeited his game, then he left the tournament.
i hate dress codes but he was quite clearly deliberately being a baby.

Apparently other players in jeans were not asked to change.

But it sounds like the straw the broke the camel's back.

People get married in jeans these days. I guess chess is supposed to be a classy gentleman's game but times are changing. More people are interested in it and more people are playing chess. It's not only for the stuck up people anymore. I think the whole culture that surrounds chess is what makes it seem intimidating.

Weird because I always see homeless looking people on YouTube playing it in American parks and stuff. Very classy

There's a lot more to it than just jeans, Carlsen was just looking for an excuse to rebel, it's been brewing for a while. In isolation Magnus acted like a baby though.

Not true, Ian Nepomniachtchi was asked to change and did it.

It's frustrating playing someone significantly better, but if you're lucky enough to play them often, you learn their tricks.

And the "self analysis" tool on the chess.com app has helped me hugely, every time I make a mistake I see what it was, what I should have done, and you can play it out vs the computer as well. "Game review" isn't free but once a day, self analysis is free every game.

Just close the results window and look for the magnifying glass image. Surprised more people don't know about it.

I remember when I was 13 years old and made the school chess team for the first time, on board 5. Was super proud and chuffed and happy I made it.

We played away to Manchester grammar school and the kid I played sat down opposite me in a full suit and tie, drops down a pen and paper to write down all the moves of our game, looks at me and asks “what’s your ECF rating?”

I knew at that point I was fecked.

Got battered, overheard him complain to his coach that he was having to play unranked people who didn’t take it seriously and that was the last time I indulged in competitive chess.

Do you like Fischer random?

Last time I tried to find a place to play it I couldn’t, but I didn’t know the terms freestyle chess or chess 360

I was thinking of doing a thread about Stratego, believe or not Stratego has a much higher number of possible outcomes than chess!
