Chess discussions

As much as Hikaru likes to the play this "professional streamer" card when it suits him to do so in classical chess, it kind of backfires when he loses the SCC to Magnus because that's what Hikaru has done day in day out for years. Professional streaming = playing online blitz/bullet all day. I think that is essentially why he has managed to close the gap on Magnus. Plus he does seem to mentally handle the matches better. So credit to him for that.

But really it just starts to say an awful lot about Magnus when he can turn up to events like this and still win, when really online blitz chess is just a casual pursuit for him and not played at anywhere near the frequency of Hikaru. It goes to show to me that whatever format Magnus wants to focus attention towards then he'll likely stretch his domination further, with the possible exception of 1+0.

What are you talking about? Not only it was a close final, very even but Carlsen has higher rankings in Blitz and Rapid, it's not a casual pursuit for him, he loves these format and he wants them at the World Chess Championship.

What are you talking about? Magnus doesn't really play much blitz and bullet online compared to Hikaru. Completely different volume of games played.

I'm talking about Carlsen playing most online rated tournament, the fact that he is and has been ranked very close to Nakamura and Firouzja in blitz and bullet. You actually don't have a clue about the volume of games that they each play online, the reality of the matter is that chess players use alternate accounts, especially the ones that do not stream. And finally it's not a secret that those are his favorite formats these days and that not only he treats them seriously but he want FIDE to integrate them to the top of Chess.

But beyond that, you built a strange narrative around a 13.5-12.5 defeat, as if it wasn't a close game between two great players.

Nakamura and Carlsen organized a match that starts on November 28 2023, 12 games Fisher Random and standard Chess.

they did exactly what 1000 others are the tournament are doing with berlin draws, but decided to have some fun doing it
it's bad but it's hardly that far out from normal behaviour

I didn't really care. I don't see why there was an outrage given other games in these tournaments and others. I suppose they were just too brazen with the prearranging.

Magnus clearing up again, no signs of slowing down either.

It's just disrespectful to the competition to do it this way. Maybe it also creates a legal risk, since this must be as close as it gets to make collusion provable in court.

So I think it's correct to sanction this.

And Dubov loses the title because of his stupidity. Deserved. Should have done the draw in a less obvious manner.

They should have been more professional about it.

The system sucks. For basically anyone bar Magnus the prize money is a way too big incentive to play defensively once in the top 5 positions. Way too many draws. Fedoseev had the chance to go for first in the rapid but prefered to defend his second place. Dubov today and yesterday was making easy draws for whatever reason.
They should implement a 3-1-0 system just like in football to incentive people to actually go for the kill.

Magnus was clearly the best but overall this was a very boring Rapid and Blitz WC.

Chess drives me crazy. When I play bots - I can beat bots 1400-1600 consistently (can’t beat anyone higher than that and obviously I beat 1400 far more than I can beat 1600s) however, people on 10 minute I am yet to beat anyone over 1200.

Vachier Lagrave's victory over Carlsen at the Blitz Championships was quite delightful. Interesting rook sacrifice. Shame Carlsen went on to predictably beat everyone else

How many times is Kramnik going to rage quit after being dominated in Titled(Cheating) Tuesday?

It's kinda reverse for me. I'm around 1600 on 10 minutes controls, but struggle against bots higher than 1400.

Here's a tip to increase your rating, don't resign. Play every game till the end, that's worth at least 100 points.

Another tip is, everybody blunders, it may seem 1600s are perfect, but they also blunder, make obvious mistakes, it's just a matter how much pressure you need to apply (ie how many moves and how strong they are).

If you are talking about the bots on chess.com, they are not rated correctly at all.

Just see a recap of his game with Magnus on Levy's channel that Magnus opening, pawn pushes to h6 e6 a6 brilliant

Pure trolling. The funny thing about it is that is the kind of things that Nakamura does when he does his "adoption" streams which has been the target of Kramnik cheating claims.

yeah. Chess.com. So yeah, that makes sense. People destroy me when I make smallest of a mistake, but with bots I can hang and sometimes they forgive obvious blunder.

You could always try the bots on lichess. They are rated correctly as they are subject to the same rating system when playing humans. Remember that the ratings on lichess are on a different scale.

I'm up to 1700 with the chess.com bots but I only play daily games against real people. I need to start playing more rapid games.

What way are the ratings different on lichess?

Lichess starts with 1500 while chess.com is 1000, so lichess ratings will be higher. The pool of players are also different. I'd say 1900 on lichess is 1600 on chess.com

if you're talking about chess.com, i beat exactly those same bots, but my rapid rating is a bit higher (~1300). in bullet i struggle much more (~1100), keep losing because of time pressure.

I don’t even dare to play bullet. 10 minute time constraint is too short for me most of the time for me.

Gotta play more and ensure to be totally undistracted.

my lower limit is 2+1. i don't think i have the patience for regularly playing 10+5 or probably even 10+0

3+2 is the most fun time control for me! The increment means you don't flag so easily but I still like the nature of quick games.

Anyone been watching the tata steel tournament ? ju wenjun a lady gm just beat firouzja great performance cant wait to see a recap no doubt agadmator will cover this match.

She has been very competitive against everyone.

I’ve become a bit obsessed with chess in the past couple months. Always knew the rules but never played properly. Kept getting hammered initially and was down at around 400 ELO but I’m up to 730 which is still shit, but I’m slowly getting there  learnt some basic theory watching Gotham and other chess YouTubers but not enough to get much further past my rating just yet. Need to study defensive openings as feel like that’s my main weakness. I’m poor with end games too, manage to feck them up sometimes even if I’m 5/6 points in front.

Discovered checks

Nakamura is in form now..
Nakamura, Fabi and Nepo all looking good..

Gukesh really solid as well..

Gukesh has looked best IMO. Without the time pressure blunder against Firouzja, he is one point clear right now. That will be the difference when one of Nepo or Naka win it. Fabi is done imo
