Chelsea vs. Manchester United

Not really, I'm quite optimistic if we use same team as against Swansea. Just needs Kagawa to start centrally, with januzaj wide and then have him play as an a/m rather than alongside Welbeck/just off him. Like I said Carrick +Fletch/Jones against Lampard and Ramires/Matic, isn't for me the worry, it's about how oscar will play compared to our 3rd man. If kagawa/Rooney drops like he will so it's even there, then whilst Chelsea still have the edge being at home and having atm overall better/more in form players in key areas, we'd still be able to give them a game and have attacking ability.

If our 3rd man though plays too high or we bring in a clev/giggs who won't give us the right balance there imo then we could struggle more.

Rooney is either out or likely shouldn't be starting anyway so that's a lot of pressure on Kagawa, indeed both our defensive solidity and attacking fluidity would hinge on the inconsistent performances of one player.

Moyes will have been watching him and Hernandez in training this week, we'll see either one or the other i should imagine.

Think Hernandez would be a definite mistake, he and welbeck aren't a naural combo up top and I don't think welbeck is good in a deeper position, he needs to be up top, the real game was an exception as they had someone he could mark, we don't need to mark lampard like that. Then I suppose jet makers could play up top with welbeck wide but that wouldn't make sense to me either given welbecks form.

I think if rooneys out an presumably jones won't come straight in, it's between kagawa, clev and giggs and I think kagawa would give us the most. I agree he's been inconsistent and its not ideal to have to rely on him but I think whoever plays there for us will be key. Tbh though the line up against Swansea second half was almost as idea as it could be for him with tje exception of Valencia. Carrick and fletch can supply him with good balls to feet and januzaj will offer an option inside and outside as will welbeck. So I guess go to hope he shows his quality.

Rooney being out does solve the problem of almost forcing us to play 442 (of a sort). That said I think we're still going to struggle.

In fairness Rooney had been playing a lot deeper in his last few games, pretty much a third midfielder, and we looked better for it, in contrast to when he was playing really high up at the start of the season.
I think I'd rather not play him rusty/not fully fit though. Kagawa to get the nod?

If Hernandez were to start then then i think the best way to make it work would be to have Januzaj on the right and Danny on the left, hoping that enough of Welbeck's improved performances continue despite the the positional change.

On the other hand if Valencia begins the match, we probably do have to trust that Sunday will be Kagawa's moment to shine, for a three man midfield with Jones as well as Valencia would be overkill on the defensive aspect.

And it goes without saying that whichever approach Moyes chooses to take the players have got to be about their football with a decent tempo.

We simply have to play Kagawa in the middle if Rooney is out. I know Chico has a good record vs Chelsea but I think we all know what the team needs to be.

Had a gander on The Shed End last night. feck me they are cock sure that they are going to hammer us. 3-0's getting thrown around like confetti. I know we're in a bad place at the minute but I don't think we ever had people here prediction 3 nil wins en masse against a top side.

You guys have :p. We cant win though I say it'll be tough and could be a draw and I got moaned at for being humble. I dont think its anywhere near a dead cert, for all the raging about Uniteds recent results you have actually won 5 out of the last 6 league games, and thats pretty good form.

What was the one they lost? The only one when a team had enough quality to turn them over. Winning five league games in a row isn't significant when they're virtually the bottom five.

Nah, I've never seen us almost to a man cock sure that we'd hammer a top 4 team.

Im sure a lot were sure you would hammer us last season in the OT FA cup tie after the Real Madrid farce.
Yeah I'll admit I thought we would hammer you guys and we started off great but tired about 30 minutes in. The only other time I thought we would hammer a top 4 team, like over a 4-0 scoreline was the 8-2 game against Arsenal, they were so poor then.

Why Cleverley?

I don't actually know. I think he has the potential to work better in that role in big games, has familiarity playing on the wings, good cross on him and can do the intricate stuff as well. Lacks a bit of pace that Valencia can give but I think you can sacrifice that to an extent.

He can't be any worse than Valencia has been the last couple weeks.

Why Cleverley?

He's not exactly the most sprightly footballer is he, and ideally i think we'll want our attacking players to be those are comfortable in taking on defences rather than looking for the least risky option.

-------Welbeck-------
Young-Kagawa-Januzaj

^ This however could be a very pacey attacking line with the capacity for plenty of interchanging. Januzaj and Young don't mind having a shot from distance either which wouldn't be an outlet were Clev or Valencia on the flank.

Probably says a bit of the state of the current United team with injuries and everything that putting Cleverley on the wing against Chelsea is seen as a decent option
Even sadder that the only other option is Valencia :(
I really hope we do well in this game, but I think it'll require a masterclass from our defenders and De Gea to keep us from losing this to be honest. Januzaj, despite how good he's been this season, is an 18 year old with little experience, he can't carry Manchester United just yet in big games like he's been in the others. Thankfully we've got almost a first choice starting defence but attack is quite poor for our standards. Not sure if I've ever been so pessimistic about a United league game before. Hope we can upset the odds.

Young's still injured. Our only options for the wings are Januzaj, Valencia, Kagawa and Welbeck, but Welbeck has to play up front since both RVP and Rooney are most likely injured and Kagawa will probably play in the hole since Rooney is out which pretty much leaves no other option but Valencia on the right, unless we mess around with the lineup and start putting players out of position.

Again? I thought he returned to the bench a week or two back. Damnit!

I'm really not at all keen on Valencia starting though [which means no doubt that he'll put in a blinder lol], we can't afford to have valuable counter attacks blasted into the LB or CB on that side.

If Zaha had been used more often...oh never mind.

Danny may indeed have to be used on the left which i know some don't agree with, yet it could be that needs must.

It certainly isn't ideal but he has played off of both wings and through the middle and I reckon will be able to cause some problems. I know he hasn't shown much this season but I do see a good player in him and i reckon this role might suit him and us in this particular game.

Agreed, it could work but I'm not sure given his confidence and his current form. But then again, the same could be said about Valencia. If we want semi confident/any type of form players all playing, then I think the best we could do to get them all on the pitch would be:
Hernandez
Welbeck Kagawa Januzaj
I hate seeing Welbeck on the wing though, and I'm not sure if its any improvement on Valencia when he plays there. I miss the days when we considered our set of wingers as the best around, or some of the best, even after Ronaldo was gone. Now all that's changed is we've improved the depth by adding Young and Kagawa and a few years have gone by and it's one of the weakest positions in our team

Welbeck
Kagawa Januzaj Valencia
Fletch Carrick
Evra Vidic Evans Rafael
DDG.

Beside a Rooney recovery, in which case he'd come in for Valencia, that's the most likely lineup regardless of what I want to see.

Chelsea must be pinching themselves. Worst United team to show up at the bridge since we played the kids after we'd already won the league. So depressing how far the strength of our squad has fallen.

want to see hernandez starting as he has a habit of scoring against chelsea but not sure about his form now. if moyes went for hernandez upfront then welbeck might be shunted to the wings as i don't think playing 4-4-2 here is going to be the best of idea.

if jones is fit i can see him in a midfield 3 with fletcher and carrick.

this is hard to say but a draw would be a great result for us to be honest. stamford brigde, jose team...

While I agree with your general point we really shouldn't have lost to Spurs, they had like two shots on target the entire game and we were quite unlucky. We were shit in various 'bigger' games this season, but Spurs at home wasn't one of them. Regardless, I can't see anything but defeat at the bridge on Sunday.

I have a good feeling, I reckon Chelsea might fall into the same trap we did after a relatively easy run of games and I reckon we will take a lot from how well we performed last weekend. 2-0 or 2-1 to us I think.

Sorry to keep repeating myself but Im stunned about the defeatism on here. Not in a "get behind your team, we are United," bravado kind of a way. But just in a "football is a funny old game, stranger things have happened / they may well underestimate us and we have everything to prove" way.
