Chelsea vs. Manchester United

Today has made me more confident.I like the Carrick/Fletcher combination but I wonder if Jones will start or even join those two.Still, I don't expect we'll get a result, I hope i'm wrong, I just want to see us go there and play well and not get rolled over as many fear could happen. That said, if Rooney starts and Adnan and Shinji can play as they did today and Danny also, assuming they're picked then anything is possible! ...actually, feck it, 3-1 United!!!!!!

I just hope we go there and attack them, not sit back at the edge of our box and hope to grind out a draw because we are awful at grinding out results.

If RVP and Rooney are back I would leave them on the bench and start with the same front four again, Chelsea away seems to big a game to bring in players who are recovering from injuries.

----------Welbeck
Adnan - Kagawa - Valencia

Not sure Jose will play as conservative as he did at OT. Remember in the Liverpool and City home games we played quite attacking, especially in the first half. Expect more of the same given our teams relative strengths and weaknesses. I expect he'll have someone to do a job on Jazuzaj or Rooney like we did on Suarez and Aguero. Hope we can get the win, but United will have some confidence now.

How can there be any certainty that Rooney is ready for a game like this? If we are to stand any chance of competing with Chelsea then our approach is going to have to be quite intensive, Rooney's recent injury and lack of a cameo appearance today must cast doubt over his ability to start next Sunday.

And for all our good attacking football in the second half against Swansea i think we ought to be hoping for three in midfield from a defensive standpoint.

I'd still feel confident from a Chelsea perspective. Our win against Swansea changes nothing and despite lagging behind the top four places, I'd be happy with a draw.

The second half today was an improvement but lets not get ahead of ourselves, Swansea are toothless, Chelsea at Stamford Bridge is a completely different level.

I think Moyes may be more cautious than some would like. If Jones is fit I think we'll play a 3 in midfield with him joining Carrick and Fletcher. If Rooney is fit to play I think Januzaj and Kagawa will be on the bench with the idea of hard working containment over creativity, at least for the first hour.

De Gea

Rafael
Smalling
Vidic
Evra

Valencia
Carrick
Jones
Fletcher
Welbeck

Rooney

de Gea, Rafael, Vidic, Jones, Carrick, Fletcher, Januzaj and Welbeck all have to start in my opinion. The others? I have no idea. Depends on injuries. All being well, think I'd go:

de Gea

Rafael
Evans
Vidic
Evra/Coentrao (God knows what will happen if the former is out and the latter doesn't sign)

Jones
Carrick
Fletcher

Welbeck
Rooney
Januzaj

Think our underdog status going into this game could do us a favour or two. Players will have a point to prove.

How likely is that anyway?

Quite likely, according to most of the Sunday papers and journos on Twitter. At the very least, no smoke without fire.

RVP is out for 6 weeks.

I expect Rooney and Welbeck up front.

And no, van Persie is not out for six weeks. Moyes denied that in his post-match presser today, the number was made up by one newspaper and then taken as gospel by virtually everyone else.

*Rooney usually takes a while to regain form/fitness so I'll bring him on instead

Welbeck

If Rooney is fit enough to start, drop out Kagawa then put in Rooney. We should play on the counter and that's the reason I've added Valencia.

Like you lot I was thinking of Jones in to basically deal with Hazard but then I don't think we'd be much of an attacking threat and Chelsea would still score IMO.

Swansea not withstanding, we're struggling to score goals and keep clean-sheets, so let's go ultra-Mourinho:
De Gea
Smalling---Vidic---Evans---Evra
Carrick---Jones---Fletcher
Rafael---Welbeck---Buttner

That assumes Evra, Evans and Jones are fit to start. If not then sign more defenders.

I'm sure together, we and Jose Mourinho's Chelsea can create the worst match in Premier League history - surpassing even the Dong-classic at Stamford Bridge in 2006/7.

Anybody know if this is on Sky?

Yes, Sunday next weekend at 4pm.

How often does Rooney play well on his first game back from injury? I'd be tempted to stick with Welbeck as the lone striker to be honest. Dilemma could be sticking with the same front 6 as today or introducing Cleverley for Kagawa to make a proper 3 man midfield.

Logically, we should get smashed here, or even if we play well, I could see us falling behind at some point and lacking the proper invention to get back into it or missing the chances we do create. I have a sneaky feeling though that this could go well for us, for some reason. I can't see it being a draw.

It is a must win game for me no matter the uphill task at hand. We have dropped far too many points and that is the consequence. Draw/lose this and it will be very hard to get 4th.

If Rooney's still out, then Welbeck up front with Valencia on the right.

Don't agree that we should be playing Jones, Carrick and Fletcher in a midfield three at all. Two of them sitting with Kagawa or Rooney just in front is solid enough imo. Rooney and Kagawa both drop deep enough to effectively create a midfield three anyway (the Rooney of the last couple of months has anyway) and that way you aren't sacrificing any attacking impetus for defensive solidity.

Fletcher likes Chelsea doesn't he, if we have one of our main strikers fit we will always have a chance, they have looked as god awful as we have at times. Fletcher has the ability to shut Hazard down which has been their main attacking threat, Rafael and Valencia can do a job on Oscar too, quite looking forward to this.

A must win, or at the very least a good performance.

A league game at Stamford Bridge should not be a must win, especially under Mourinho. I'd argue for every team in the league anything that they get here is a bonus.

Probably that cnut Atkinson again...

We should play the same team as we did against Swansea regardless of whether Rooney is fit.

Think we'll go 1 up but the referee will play a part and we'll draw or lose 2-1

I hope the players are up for this - Chelsea aren't all that

All we have to do is get Phil Jones to break Hazard. Easy peasy...

It was great to see Fletch and Carrick have a game together yesterday. Chelsea can play wide if need be, but usually cut in centrally. So our 2 boyos will need to protect us well. Chelsea will be happy with the draw, we prob need the win to claw back a few more points. This is the game where we shall see Moyes' mentality, and how he approaches these type of games. It's a game where a draw isnt a bad result, but with our current run it isnt that good either in a way.

Hopefully.

I think it's time Moyes played a three-man midfield. We really want a win here, but we have to be honest and say that getting a draw would be a very good result. I don't think Chelsea have lost a league game at Stamford Bridge under Jose, or if they have it has been a lot of games since, so if we did win here it would be something. I'd hope that Evans, Jones, and Rooney are back and ready to play.

de Gea
Rafael Vidic Evans Evra
Carrick Jones Fletcher
Rooney Januzaj
Welbeck

Been asking for this for ages, but I think due to Valencia's goal and a lot of good past performances against Ashley Cole, that he is going to start. That will mean two central midfield players, unless Rooney doesn't make it. If Moyes has to go for a more standard 'United' formation, it's going to be this, again, injuries permitted:

de Gea
Rafael Vidic Evans Evra
Carrick Jones
Valencia Rooney Januzaj
Welbeck

Smalling, Fletcher/Cleverley and Kagawa will replace the doubts if they don't make it.

I would be tempted to go with Fletcher, Carrick and Jones (if fit) in this one to really get amongst them. Januzaj has to play and probably Welbeck starting with Rooney returning from the bench if we're chasing the game. I think this is Valencia's kind of match aswell so I would go with him on the right.

Retaining Kagawa in the middle and let the Kagawa/Evra combo continue!

Whilst Valencia's physicality lends itself to the encounter his chance creation from the right wing has been relatively wasteful, so do the benefits of starting him really outweigh the costs considering that forays into Chelsea's half are likely to be few in number?

If we play three in the middle that should allow us to unleash the more than threatening attacking ability of Rafael on the one hand and Evra on the other.
