Chelsea banned from signing players

They will appeal and win. No way will they make this stick.

The relevant rule:

4. In addition to the obligation to pay compensation, sporting sanctions
shall be imposed on any club found to be in breach of contract or found
to be inducing a breach of contract during the protected period. It shall
be presumed, unless established to the contrary, that any club signing a
professional who has terminated his contract without just cause has induced
that professional to commit a breach. The club shall be banned from registering
any new players, either nationally or internationally, for two registration
periods.

Two transfer windows for enticing a young player to breach his contract. Seems a harsh punishment and one that might be reduced on appeal. I also have to ask the question - would Real Madrid, AC Milan, Barcelona etc have been punished in the same way?

That is a good question.

I doubt that decision will be upheld though

Depends on the inducement I guess. I suspect this is far more than tapping up.

 Feckin brilliant that.

Apparently they persuaded the player in question to breach his contract with Lens so that he would be released.

That is much worse than standard tapping up. The ban is thoroughly deserved.

 Just after having a summer with very little activity, and all. They were probbly holding their cash back with the view to spend big next summer.

But yes, I agree with some of the above posts. They will appeal and have the length of time massively reduced.

If they don't i'll be hugely surprised but i think they're still going to be banned from the January window. Which could still cause them a problem with the African Nations cup.

No doubt Chelsea will be gutted they didn't bring more players in this summer now..

They have a suspended sentence hanging over them from the Ashley Cole affair, so that might go some way to explain why the punishment is so harsh.

This should hit them bad considering they've already an aging squad. In Jan 2011 Carvalho will be 32, Cashley 30, Lampard 32, Drogba 32, Anelka 31, Terry 30, Ballack 34, Joe Cole 29, Deco 33, Malouda 30, Ferreira 32 and Belletti 34. And many of them another year older before the summer window opens. It'll be a busy January for them.

If the ban sticks they are fecked in january with the African nations cup.
That too. Will Essien, Drogba, Kalou and Mikel all go there?

If you are going to lay it all on the line to get a player, you damn well better make sure it's a superstar like.........Kakuta.

Kakuta is very highly rated. Might end up worth the brief hassle.

I am stunned, absolutely stunned- we collude in getting a youth player under the table and then get banned from signing any professional player in 2010? I somewhat doubt Chelsea is the only side who has done this.

If any squad could cope with this it is us despite the aging nature of it, and the positive side of it is it will force Chelsea to focus on bringing our current generation of youth players through.

Either way, I'm sure Chelsea are speaking to the best lawyers on Earth right now, Bruck Buck himself is a leading partner in a big American firm in London so it isn't as if we are not well connected. If I were Chelsea right now, I would get the very best private investigators in the World and go after Platini and the FIFA executive directly because if they are free of any immoral dealings I would be absolutely amazed.

AC Milan 2.

the darlings of FIFA can never do any wrong in the eyes of their governing body

ffs, Milan got away with out-right cheating back in 06/07. Instead of getting regulated to Serie B like Juventus, they had points deducted from them...

I somehow doubt that hiring detectives to go after Platini is top of Chelsea's priorities right now.

Well if we cannot spend money on players we may as well spend it on investigators to drag Platini down- who believes he is totally clean?

You have to feel for the player a little, BBC are saying the lads been banned for 4 months as well! Still its quite funny because isnt there the ACoN this year? They'll lose 4 players and 2 of which are first teamers, so much for getting replacements in Jan

Still it does seem UEFA and FIFA are going about making examples of British clubs, i mean the diving case and now this... Whos next?!

All things considered, it seems a huge risk to take on a youngster who may or may not turn out to be special.

But if he turns out to be a superstar then you've really hit the jackpot. You take a risk and sometimes it really works out.

Chelsea are fecked now - way too many old players and no way of signing players for the next two windows. PLUS the African Cup of Nations.

I'd be very concerned if I was a chav right now...

Get your money on United winning the title in 2010/11.

While we're at it, we might as well open up the entire can of worms that is football transfers, rather than just a crack. Then we can really see who the offenders are.
