Chelsea 2024/25

Abysmal for the second goal. As soon as Haaland turns he needs to sprint back towards his goal. Instead he just dosen't move and it's a relatively simple lob.

Is Jorgensen deemed not ready or something? He was a regular for Villareal last season so he's coming from a very good league to adapt. Petkovic also wasn't that bad in the run in last season, if anything it should've been Sanchez loaned to Strasbourg.

I'm sure he'll get the freezing out treatment in the summer.
Turned a 0.03 xG chance into a 0.45 xG chance. Beyond idiotic. Also gave the ball away 19 times which is staggering.

Petrovic was worse at shot stopping but didn't have as many calamitous moments (apart from one disaster against Burnley). Jorgensen has also looked far more consistent than Sanchez; he absolutely has to play.

When you look at the past Chelsea had Cech and then Courtois as their GKs and then since Courtois left they've had trouble finding proper replacement for 7 years now. Kepa, Mendy, Petrović, Sanchez... Sanchez probably worst of those 4 and none was good enough anyway. Will surely get a new GK finally this summer and will be interesting to see who they go for. Think it's Chelsea and United from the 'top 6' clubs that need a new GK, others are fine.

They might go for a more exotic name but Kelleher would be the sensible choice for me.

Don't forget about the £20m they spent on Filip Jorgensen in the summer too.

Add another £17M for Mike Penders as well. He's a teenage goalkeeper signed from Genk and stayed there on loan for the season.

I'm so tired of banging on the same drum over and over again. Since Clearlake took over we've spent roughly £80M on goalkeepers alone and the best we've got is Bob fecking Sanchez. Even though that money should have been enough to sign just about any keeper on the market not one of the goalies we've bought are anywhere near good enough to start for a serious club. Just an utter waste of money over and over again.

On paper I can see what the club have been trying to do here. Buy enough lottery tickets and the likelihood of one of them paying off increases, and then just sell the rest to recoup most of the money. But if all of them are shit it just ends up costing valuable points on the table and tons of money as a result.

Though I'll reserve judgement on Penders as he's still really young for a goalkeeper and has the most chance of coming good eventually. But the fact is we need a quality keeper right this instant and not five years from now. The right way would have been to spend the bulk of that money signing a top quality keeper for the squad's immediate needs and then maybe getting a young talent like Penders to develop on the side and maybe eventually taking over if they prove good enough.

The scattergun approach will inevitably have some success. Cole Palmer for roughly £42 million is obviously the standout.

I'm really surprised that you didn't go for the Valencia goalkeeper, Mamardashvili. He was available for around £25 million and would have been miles better than any of your current options.

Maybe for outfield players a 'lots of unknown quantity over proven quality' approach makes a bit more sense if a club has the resources to operate like that. For example it's much easier to buy a few wingers, throw them into the deep end and see which ones stay afloat because at least you can rotate the starters game by game and use substitutions within matches. After a while you'll get a pretty good understanding on which ones are worth keeping and which ones should either be sold or reduced to a backup role.

But goalkeeping by it's nature is very different. You can only play one and the hierarchy between the keepers is usually set in stone before a ball's even been kicked into a new season. It takes lots of costly howlers and general undeperformance for that hierarchy to change, and even then the backup keeper is rarely a major improvement because there's usually a reason they were deemed the backup to begin with.

With Sanchez we're now close to the point of no return. He was shite last season and most fans found it baffling he was made the 1st choice keeper for the season when he already lost his place to Petrovic last year. Right now there's no excuses for not giving Jörgensen the nod. At least then we can see what he's made of and can then decide to go for a new starting goalie in the summer if/when needed.

I kinda get handing out your Boots, shirt AND shorts but only the shorts is an interesting choice.

Football journo Oliver Holt proudly boasts he has a pair of framed Norman Whiteside shorts hanging on his bedroom wall.

Whatever turns you on I suppose.

He probably bought them already framed at a charity auction. I can't imagine Norman whipped them off post match and Oli immediately gave them a sniff.

As you say though, whatever floats your boat!

Didn’t know you were at the match tonight @duffer. Did they smell nice?

He didn't need to smell them to know they need a wash. Or maybe he was thinking of framing them without cleaning them to keep the "match" in them? which is weird too, given those aren't Maradona's shorts neither and nothing was won there.

Back to starting Kepa next season?!

Bournemouth lording it above us and 6 fewer conceded. Everywhere our discarded players seem to be doing well.

Billion+ spent and that's where we are... On the owners and their yes man coach.

I thought Maresca had you playing some good stuff in October/November but since then Lavia constantly injured once more and Jackson also been a huge miss as him with Neto is a great way to open teams up on the break.

At the back the transfer strategy of not wanting to sign anyone over 25 hinders the backline for games like today and last week.

As for the keepers well you have to hope the Genk guy coming in will prove to be as good as Courtois all those years back otherwise you've got a real backlog in that position.

Can't believe I'm saying this but bring back Kepa. I'm sick of these 2 clowns in goal.

Chelsea's results in league over last 2 months: 10 games - 2 wins, 3 draws and 5 defeats. 9 points won out of 30 available. Also lost to Brighton in the Fa Cup. Top 4/5 is obviously still on but form will have to improve. Top 4/5 and winning Conference League, would that be good enough for Chelsea fans to keep Maresca?

Champions league would definitely be enough.

I don't really give a feck about the conference league.

I don't particularly care about the Conference League but it would be a disgrace if we didn't win it. If we get knocked out before the final and top 5 becomes unfeasible then I wouldn't mind him being sacked.

Chelsea is probably the only team in the world that can rely on it's academy completely for a top 4 team. You don't but the amount of talent your academy churns out is ridiculous.

Out of the all the teams in the race for the CL, we’re in the ones in free fall. We went from 2nd being 4 points clear of Arsenal to 6th and suddenly in a 7 way race for the CL and we’re the team in the worst form. We’ve lost or drawn to all the teams around us in the last 6-7 weeks.

Winning the conference league is neither here nor there. We have to win it, but winning it doesn’t save the season in any way if CL isn’t achieved.

What's the opinion on Maresca now?

It feels like he's now doing what everyone expected at the start of the season. Was that good start a false dawn and mainly down to Palmer being in excellent form (who also seems to have nosedived)?

Academy players get a way shorter leash than players signed for big money. They also have to work much harder to earn their opportunities in the team than other players. Sticking Nkunku on the LW when he almost never has a good game there is a prime example. Tyrique George is a much better LW but it feels like he has to do something extraordinary in little cameos to earn a start.

Just browsed the sides left in the ECL. Yeah, Chelsea should be getting to the final at the very least.
