Probably nobody. We're all playing for second, but Arsenal won't have that purple patch again.
That’s really difficult to say. No one is consistent for sure and if everyone keeps fecking up there’s a good chance they could repeat their “success”. However they definitely need investment, if Saka and/or Ode get injured they aren’t nearly as threatening. Consistency is their biggest challenge like everyone else.

Perfectly entitled to your opinion on next season, but to call it a purple patch 35 games into a 38 game season, deary dear.

If it was 35 games you wouldn't be about to finish second. I see a collection of some decent and some average players who are in the form of their lives and playing on confidence, or were playing on confidence. Odegaard is one top player but after almost 10 years since the early hype is it a one off or has he finally found his potential. Keeping it all going into next season is going to be incredibly difficult especially when you see those around you strengthen more than you are able to.

Anyway, Chelsea. I've always thought once Roman went they would revert to what they were before. It never felt like they established that aura of a top club and I don't see Pochettino changing that. If anything he fits the profile of a nearly man.

Is it not 35 games into a 38 game season like?
Surely as a Utd fan you should appreciate its not just about buying names, it's about coaching, tactics, mentality, team spirit, continuity and a bit of luck.

I'd rather have good players coached really well, than very good players managed poorly. That's a much more solid foundation for sustained performance.

Also, why are those around us going to strengthen more than we are able to?

Anyway, it's a discussion best for 1 of the Arsenal threads, shouldn't really derail the Chelsea thread.

I dont think Arteta is the great manager you think he is.

You wont strengthen because you don't have the money. City are City, we generate massive revenues and unfortunately may well have oil money too, and Newcastle are probably going to go stupid this summer.

I don’t think they will. Eddie Howe has basically said they can’t afford to buy the Neymar’s of the game. They’ll continue their strategy that got them Bruno, buy decent players at reasonable prices. That’s not to say they won’t spend £200 mil again but half that squad are relegation shite, they’ll be upgrading depth more than getting marquis signings.

Won the league today, that's the double done.

The end of Clearlake's first season ends with undeniable success.

I know it's a sort of pee take but I actually think Emma Hayes as a stand in instead of Lampard would've been fascinating. Wonder if they'd actually consider that next time if Poch flops although I guess the WSL running alongside the premier league makes it difficult for her to consider leaving Women's team mid season.

A female managing an actual premier league team remains a very remote possibility but if it's going to happen anywhere in next five years Chelsea seems like a place it could happen.

I don’t see why it would be a good idea for Emma Hayes to do it. She’s managing the creme de la crème of the women’s game and winning everything domestically. The men’s team is an absolute mess. The odds would be completely against her from the start and you just know people would tie her inevitably failure to get a tune out of these players to the fact that she’s a woman.

It’s not easy being the trailblazer in something, so doing it when the conditions are suboptimal in a completely lost season would be a terrible idea and simply not worth it for her.

'Chelsea have an amazing group of players, they just need a manager to come in and organize them & they will be back'. Back where? Certainly not the top of the table? Top two? Hard to see them beating out all of Arsenal, United, Newcastle, Spurs, Liverpool.

Chelsea have bought poorly for almost two years now. Stocked it with underperformers on massive contracts who will be nigh on impossible to shift.

I also wonder about future recruitment. They seem to overpay for every player and even when paying through the roof prices, they still end up with a player who looks like he was bought in the bargain bin.

The only thing I can say to doom and gloom posts like this is we will see. Hard to predict anything about Chelsea until we confirm Poch and then see how we trim the squad whilst also adding pieces in crucial positions of need.

How come Frank Lampard gets such an easy ride from the English media?

I can think of many managers who were absolutely hammered for a lot less.

It’s petty for sure but classless? Is it that serious?
It’s just unnecessary really. It’s hardly been a vintage Chelsea year.
I liked your post about Emma Hayes though. I too think she would be best placed to break into the male game, but you made an excellent point about it not being the right season, even as an interim. Probably not the right time for Emma either given her health issues this year.
Sacking Tuchel was a stupid move, and sacking Potter was even dimmer, but if you get the right manager in I think you’ll have a great season next year - your squad is too talented not to.

It’s unnecessary for sure. It’s petty but we’ve been butt of the jokes all
season so we’ll hand out the #bantz wherever the opportunity presents itself, thanks

Totally agree on Emma Hayes. And I hope you’re right about next season.

Deservedly, you guys have been too smug for too long under Roman! :smirk:

Chelsea and Leeds been intense rivals going back decades.
The main hatred goes back to the 1970 Cup Final. I think Elleray and another refereed the video of the match and said they would have sent up to 11 players off.

I was only 13 at the time and a true 'hooligan', but watching it made even me wince.

Should've given the caretaker job to Emma Hayes and I'm not joking.

To be fair, I don't think anyone would have guessed this is how bad Lampard's second tenure would have panned out. A lot of the thought process went into Potter being clueless, but there was obviously more than what we saw as outsiders. Next year will be interesting for Chelsea.

It's amazing how bad a season it's been for Chelsea. That 2-0 win vs Dortmund was probably only good moment of the whole season. Perhaps those wins vs Milan in group stage. One win against top 10 teams in PL and that was 2-0 win at Villa back in October. Nothing else. 44 points, worst points tally since 1988 I believe.

Chelsea will be back especially as they have this habit of big ups and downs but this season was just terrible.

Quick cash-grab before the PL ban come into effect
