a team that went to both domestic finals last season and arguably were better team in both of them, were around 10 mins from reaching the CL semis and finished 3rd to this empty shell of a team in 12th place?
For some reason this reminded me of how much my kids love to destroy sandcastles that took me ages to build.

Destruction is easy

...and stoop and build them up with worn out Kantes

Any info on Dujon Sterling? Seen he was linked to a move to Rangers. How is he viewed by you guys, any good?!
I always seen him as the most likely to come in and challenge Reece James. The difficulty was always his injuries as noted above but also his attacking ability was nowhere near what was required in a wing back as our managers at the time played 352/343.

He is definitely more of a full back than a wing back. Really solid defensively and has played at left back and centre back too but his main position is right back.

I’d imagine there have been decisions made as he will not be moving to Scotland to play back up to Tavernier. So I’d imagine centre back or left back would have been discussed with him beforehand. He’s far better defensively than Tavernier but I reckon if you check his attacking output from loan spells his goals and assists wouldn’t be great and I can’t see Tavernier being dropped.

I’d be surprised if he’s signed to replace Tavernier but I’d also be surprised if he’s signed to play left back. He can play right centre back in a back 3 but I’m not sure yous have ever played a back 3 before under Beale?

Yeah, from the little I've seen of him he looks a really interesting prospect. I agree though, will be interesting to see what position is being earmarked for him if he does join. Normally you would say Goldson and Tav's positions are nailed down, so it would be centre back and left back up for grabs. Wonder if he could have a Calvin Bassey type impact as Goldsons partner in defence?

Seems some of Beales strategy is to target former highly rated youngsters from down south who maybe have lost their way a wee bit. Cantwell, Sterling, Dowell, Maja all sort of fall into that.

Edit: Sorry I just seen the Scottish Football thread and you have discussed this in there.

I forgot I had or I’d have copy and pasted.

Seems it’s a done deal also. Looks like all terms have been agreed. If he stays fit that is a magnificent coup for Rangers.

It's really odd because at youth level it was the other way round.

He actually started as a winger before being moved to wingback when the academy side changed in line with Conte implementing it in the first team.

Absolutely and it’s why I made the Wan Bissaka comparison as he also started off as a winger however is far better defensively.

No worries mate, thanks for the info. I just didn't want people to be annoyed with me taking over the Chelsea thread with Rangers chat. ;)

I thought Lampard hated Kepa last time out, how come he hasn't put Mendy back into the team yet? People say he's injured yet he seems to be an unused sub most weeks.

That's another problem for Chelsea, no point signing a new keeper if both are still at the club otherwise it's a real drain on resources.

Hope you’re enjoying it today mate.

I hope yous score another two.

There was no 'hate'. Kepa was just performing very poorly at the time and got rightfully dropped. This season Kepa has been much better than Mendy and has rightfully been the first choice keeper. It's really that simple.

If there's a new goalie arriving in the summer it will definitely mean one of Kepa/Mendy will leave, perhaps even both? Mendy is probably the easier one to shift given he's on a reasonable salary (£55K/wk) and his remaining book value is lower too. Surely there's a club somewhere who would happily take a UCL winning goalkeeper for £15M+?

Lampard destroyed his confidence and left him a shell of a player for 2 years. Mendy was dreadful at the start of this season, howler after howler. Fans turning on Kepa again after the 6 straight defeats before the last game? Who knows what is going on in training.

Numbers speak for themselves, our defence is one of the best in the league and our attack one of the worst. Courtois, Allison, Lloris, De Gea etc can get away with howlers more often because their teams actually average more than 1 goal a game. If you score 5 and win, everyone forgets the GK mistake.

One of them will probably leave I think, Mendy most likely if we can get a good offer. The same goes for quite a few players in the squad, we'll sell players we get decent offers for because no other choice financially. What actually matters, is our attack improving to near 2 goals a game. I don't see it personally, I reckon we'll be mid table at best.

He was utter shite for ages, Lampard should've dropped him long before he did.

Pretty sure Lampard was briefing all his press mates after first sacking that Kepa was one of the main reasons he lost his job, were loads of negative articles about him at the time anyway.

I'm just surprised Mendy hasn't been put in given it's now a dead season.

Because he was objectively terrible, not because Lampard was "briefing his mates".

He's been very good this season but lets not re-write history here that Kepa's bad press was down to Lampard whispering to his buddies, he was shockingly bad.

Kepa was having a historically bad season in 2020. He was near the bottom of nearly every metric of all the keepers in Europe.

He put up literally the worst season in the history of the PL in terms of PSxG+/-. We wound up with 22 more goals conceded than Liverpool that year but were more or less level by most xG models.

Is it likely that Chelsea will struggle for many years with their new owners?

Nah, we have signed a lot of young players and need a good manager to utilise them.

Lampard is abysmal at management.

They’ve made a lot of mistakes but is that likely to continue through the coming years? Doubt it. Football can change very quickly with the right management. Look at Wolves and Villa. We might have too many people at the top, that’s my biggest worry. Yet if they come up with a good solid strategy then long term we will be absolutely fine. Possibly stronger than under RA who never implemented a real long term strategy.

Presumably starting after this season? We won't have to suffer Poch ball and another new manager bounce, will we?
We will have Lampard and we will lose our last 3 games of the season. Newcastle, United and City. You don’t have to worry about us.

What's happening with Thiago Silva then? Saw he's asked for a move away?

He's mulling it over. All credible Chelsea sources are suggesting he's waiting to see who the next manager is, exactly why and how next year will be different compared to this one, etc. If he's unconvinced though Chelsea won't prevent him from moving back to Brazil.

I think Pock will flop big time there. Wrong manager for such set of spoiled players imo. He won't be able to contain them.

I see it the opposite. The right manager for this set of very talented but young and inexperienced players.

I remember this type of stuff getting said when Arteta signed an extension.

Arsenal have a lot to prove next season. They won't be able to sneak up on teams and just play the same way from the off, knowing they have CL midweek games and injuries and form will catch up to them more frequently with match accumulation. Arsenal have to improve just like everyone else in order to sustain their table position, if not go higher.

It wasn't really a post about Arsenal. It was about how dangerous it is to be dismissive of other clubs / managers a bit too early.

What, in all that’s holy, has shown you that this Chelsea has any focus on the long term?

Everyone has a lot to prove next season.

We've improved from a middling club with an unproven manager to a top 4 contender with young, credible talent. It's not that hard to digest.

We didn't expect a top 4 finish this season, and we will next season, with Europe, that's the basic standard for this club. We're going in the the direction, and with a good philosophy to boot. Not sure it applies to most other clubs in that' space.
