Chelsea 2020/21 - General discussion

I thought this was really good to see from Hudson-Odoi

Leeds style of play has left them open to pacy forwards getting behind their line. The best way to attack them would be a 4-3-3 with Pulisic-Werner-Ziyech.
Fully agree, it will be harsh to drop Oli after this to say the least but with him on the pitch Leeds will feel more comfortable to push us high than they would with Werner and Puli on.

There's many games coming up in the winter that suit his skillset, but this one's not of them.

I agree with you both actually, fair points well made. Leeds pose almost the polar opposite challenge to the one we faced against Spurs.

I have been waiting to play Leeds since the day they were promoted. It's a crying shame there won't be full capacity for this as I would have loved to be there. The fierce and intense rivalry between the clubs obviously dates back many decades but it has been lying dormant for years but I don't think it has ever gone away.

More recently, of course, Lampard was embroiled in a controversy with Leeds and Bielsa and it appears Leeds fans are still hung up on that, though I suspect Lampard and Bielsa have both long since moved on from the shenanigans from a couple of years ago.

If you have a spare 35 minutes, and you're interested in learning a bit about the heated Chelsea-Leeds rivalry, this video was put together superbly.

Looks like a typical sshit a Leeds United fan will ooze out from multiple openings.

Also....feck Leeds!

Some of their players in the years they were down took the rivalry with them to the PL when they got a transfer, for example Jermaine Beckford milked every single goal he put past us, even when he did it for Leicester in a game we were comfortably winning.

Leeds Chelsea was one of the biggest rivalries right through the 70's. The 2 finals we played in early 70s would have resulted in about 8 red cards in the modern game. Absolute carnage. Wasnt long after the final, 5 yrs or so; when Peter Houseman passed either.

Although one of the best Chelsea goals I saw was against them from Gudjohnsen's bicycle kick. And we all know who Hasselbaink wants to win ;)

Mason Mount MOTM today? I thought he was excellent again today. One assist, should have at least one more.

I voted Mount MOTM. He was everywhere today doing everything. That defensive take away, sprint forward, and ball across the field perfectly to Werner was insane. He always does the dirty work.

I think it's disappointing to see them not lose some pts yet. After Dec/Jan, I hope the amount of games will make them implode a bit more. Injuries have hit them too, let's see how long Ziyesh is out for example. Overall, I am still thinking they won't keep the form that long.

We've had injuries all season. It's just that our depth is very good and nobody has really noticed. Ziyech being out now just as Pulisic coming back for example.

Gilmour is also back from injury so that gives us some depth/option in central mid.

Our next game is a meaningless final Champions League fixture at home to Krasnodar so I would expect a huge amount of rotation.

Still hoping for you guys to struggle and lose pts against Wolves, West Ham and City.
Not sure for Everton, and I hope Arsenal decides to turn up against you guys and run to the ground for that single game  .

Fair play you guys have a chance this season, you’ve collated a sick squad, and I hate you for it.

Prior league home game in 2003 was pretty interesting as well.

Leeds fans got kettled and escorted to train station. Was so happy they went down .

Performance yesterday was really impressive. Made coming from a goal down, mistake, look easy.

Only criticism can be that we should convert a few more chances.

What do Chelsea fans think of Gullit? I saw his interview about how he came to Chelsea and how he enjoyed his time there and how he wanted to play as sweeper and how Hoddle didn't want him there because his other players were not used to that kind of defenders.

I'm a bit happy for Zouma. Such a nice player who's struggled badly in his career with injuries

I agree, I was gutted when suffered that big injury against you lot. When he went out on loan 2 sesons back to back I thought his Chelsea career was done. Really, really glad the club didn't pull the trigger on him when Everton were pushing for him.

Bit before my time so I can't answer any questions about how great he was but I've seen games from that era, read his book so I have a general idea - I will say that I haven't met a single Chelsea fan who was around back then who doesn't absolutely love the geezer.

I went to every home game that first season. He was so much better than pretty much everyone else in the side that season that it was almost a joke.

As for his move to midfield, that was more to get him involved more as I recall it.

Even though he was old and not the player he used to be, he was still awesome.

I have enjoyed Chelsea so far this season however I’d like a bit more ambition in the bigger games. We have really sat back and settled against Liverpool, Man Utd and Spurs when we could have applied more pressure in the final third. If you dare mention this on the Chelsea forum you get banned for having the audacity to provide any minor criticism of Lampard. The armchair fans on there are embarrassing

Overall though it has been a positive start to the season and we have finally rectified the defensive problems. Kepa is such a hinderance to our progression. Thiago Silva has been a revelation though. An absolute elite defender.

The Liverpool game is hardly relevant; that defense was a shambles compared to our current setup and Christensen & Kepa's brainfarts ruined the game. The United game was hardly a bad point away, though I'm glad we're not persisting with the 3-4-3.

The Spurs game I completely disagree with you - their recent results have shown that pushing men forward is the height of folly. We totally dominated the second half and were unlucky to not win overall; far better to play sensibly to not allow them acres of space on the break.

Always had a soft spot for Ruud, he just oozed class on and off the pitch. That was a happy time to be a blue.

It would have been naive to approach the games any other way than we did. Our first defensive game was against Sevilla, after defensive horror shows against Liverpool and Westbrom Lampard needed to steady the ship fast. United game last season ended 4-0 against us, after we played so well. No thanks I'll take the point. As for the Spurs im sure both City and Arsenal would love to have the point we got from the game after all their domination. I don't mind our approach in the big games so much as long as we get something from the game. Its the smaller teams that matter most, thats where the points are.

I was going to give the game a miss to watch the United game but I guess I'll watch it on my phone now.

I will watch the Chelsea game on replay to see how the kids perform. I will watch the Man Utd game live as it has a real consequence.

It will be exciting to see our youth players playing in the Champions League. It’s testament to the hard work Lampard has done already at Chelsea.

Whilst I appear to be the only Chelsea fan who isn’t afraid to criticise his game management, his work with younger players has been phenomenal.

Kepa starting is a worry for me. This guy is brutal.

I take it you don't have Twitter. He gets shit every single game for every single decision.

Someone was posting pictures of him dressed up as a KKK member because he was not bringing on CHO earlier in the season.

The chances of you being the only person who "isn't afraid" to do something, literally anything you can think of, is slim to none

Baldpard was trending one evening at the start of season.

With Hudson-Odoi and Ziyech definitely out and Pulisic an injury doubt for Everton, would it be worth it to chuck Anjorin in there again or maybe someone like Peart-Harris to fill in out wide?

Both would be shock decisions, and the easiest thing to do is probably to chuck Havertz out wide again but I kind of really want Havertz to get a run of uninterrupted games as an 8 to get him properly going.

If Pulisic is fit enough to start, then all of the above is moot and Anjorin sits on the bench.

It sounds like it'll be Pulisic - Lampard said if the match in midweek had mattered he'd have played; my interpretation is that they're still managing his hamstring so I suspect he'll get an hour or so but not much more regardless of game state.

I didn't watch our match on Tuesday closely, but from what I saw Anjorin looked decent if a bit unsure playing in a wide position. I'm not sure he's ready frankly - as much as I agree that getting Havertz bedded in as an 8 would be ideal, for me he's the better option in what is a pretty tricky fixture.

Anjorin was playing out position himself, to be completely fair to him. It is more of a preference of mine rather than an expectation. Lampard won't bench Kovacic in order play Anjorin out of position on the wing, but yes, if Pulisic starts, then it is all moot. Havertz plays 8, the rest of the team picks itself.

Anjorin had a really good game on Tuesday. Probably his best with the seniors but I don't think he's ready for consistent play in matches that aren't dead rubber. Think we'll have to risk Pullisic on Saturday for some 70mins or so depending on results so far, then bring on one of Jorgi or Gilmour and push Mount out wide with Giroud and Werner.
Must say I've not been too keen on Peart-Harris. I know he plays mostly as a wing back but I'd rather have Livramento on the team as extra cover on the wings.

I would too, if I'm perfectly honest. He's an absolute gem this kid but yes, thought it might not be fair on him to end up having chuck him in the deep end out of position in a game that matters. But as you say, we have senior players like Mount and Havertz who can be moved across if Pulisic can't start or finish the game.

Lampard has confirmed that Pulisic is available for the Everton game, if he was not fit, I have no doubt Havertz would play RW.

James, Delph, and Coleman out for Everton...it is an early Christmas.

I probably sound like a broken record but Pulisic’s injuries are concerning. He can’t stay fit for more than 2 or 3 weeks. Always something niggling with him.
