Cheering on Liverpool - 2017/18 edition

Massive overreaction, as standard. Most united fans accept Liverpool as the biggest rival and most detestable club. But us finishing ahead of them isn't going to be dependent on today's result. In the bigger picture Man City's unbeaten run was becoming irritating especially when many felt they are certainly not the invincible force that we are being forced to believe. Getting satisfaction in Liverpool beating them isn't a mortal sin. Different question if there was something on the line for us, e.g.- I'd rather finish fifth and see city lose than finish fourth and see them unbeaten.

Today was win win or lose lose for us today depending on your perspective, but ultimately satisfying to see smug city lose and liverpools pathetic frailties exposed despite their good win

Agreed. I was a lot happier when Liverpool pressed the self-destruct button and almost threw the game. This shows their distinct weakness at the back is as prevalent as ever.
I understand the view that says that Utd is better but I mean "far better" is a stretch. All it's based on it's speculation turned in a positive light about how their season and ours might unfold till the end. I'm just talking about simple facts, there isn't much between the teams in terms of points, they drew, almost identitical goal difference.
That just cannot equal being far better than them I'm sorry.

We're not far better, but I'm confident we have enough ability within the the team to see off any challenge from Liverpool.

Hate that this fight will be over second place, though.

I find it absurd, that just because you have a passionate hate for Liverpool, you all would want a team (who we could still catch given the right circumstances) that are above us in points to gain more points from any football match.

Rivalry is one thing, but stupidity is another.

I just didn’t want City to go the season unbeaten. Now that’s over, it’s back to ensuring Liverpool produce more of that comical defending we saw yet again.

They were fortunate that equally comical defending and goalkeeping happened at the other end.

Fair enough if that's your point of view. I can see where you are coming from but I think our 3 draws in the Christmas period notwithstanding we have had a better season than Liverpool so far. The City defeat knocked the stuffing out of our players, it was evident in the wins against WBA and Bournemouth and it became quite clear in the 3 games we drew afterwards. But before those games I don't think anyone here would be disputing the fact that Utd are a better team than Liverpool.

It now looks as though we are getting over the City defeat (hopefully the Dubai trip will help in refocusing the players), and we should see the team playing to its full potential, which to me atleast, is higher than that of Liverpool.
I won't deny it. If Sanchez, it'll be even better

Lukaku in our team and we'd have lost the game for sure.

I was glad Liverpool won for the simple reason that it takes away City's chance of an unbeaten league campaign.
In my view this will hit City quite hard, they probably already think they've won the league and they now don't have the unbeaten season to fight for chances are they'll start dropping a few more points here & there.
I mean I'm 99% sure they'll win the league but Football can be fecking weird so who knows.

Is it not more absurd to support the team who level on points with us over the team that are 15 ahead?

You realise there is literally no way we can catch City? Even if they lose 5 of their last 15 (which is already showing how preposterous this idea is), we need to win every single match to catch them, which isn't going to happen. So realistically they need to win no more than 6 or 7 of their remaining matches for anybody to have a chance. It's absurd.

Game of the season so far

It really wasn't. The game was all Liverpool, and City had no reason to be even close to a draw. But, Liverpool instead of seeing the game out decided to try to get a 5th goal and exposed themselves at the back in the final minutes of the game.

The best games this season have been with Arsenal; because they can be absolutely shocking in one part of the game and world beaters in another.

Well i still believe anything is possible, if Leicester city can win the PL, man city can drop 15 points

That swings both ways, some people need a big dollop of realism. We ain’t catching city, even if they drop points we’d practically need to win our remaining games. Yeah, that ain’t happening.

Liverpool,’Chelsea and spurs on the other hand are right on our tails. The logical thing would be to hope Liverpool get beaten. The passionate thing would be to hope Liverpool get beaten.

I remember clearly united fans cheering Liverpool on in the CL final against Milan because “it would be good for English football”.

Weirdos

Look at the decking points, Liverpool are right on our ass and spurs/Kane are gaining momentum too. It’s just as conceivable that we drop out of top 4.

City will drop points somewhere. Wanting Liverpool to win this because city might go unbeaten is beyond madness

Seriously thinking of banning all you feckers if city lose today

Haha banning people for having an opposing opinion and wanting a different result to you is a bit childish and something that would would happen over at Rawk.

I have a huge, long-standing hatred of LFC.
Today, I find myself pleased that city can no longer say "we won't lose a PL game this season", but I'm not especially happy that it was the scousers that beat them.

Logic goes out of the window when it comes to football rivalry. I have (only once) been genuinely pleased to see Liverpool win (when they beat Keegan's Newcastle in the 1996 title run-in). I cheered the last Liverpool goal and felt very, very dirty afterwards.

i am pleased to see Man City's winning run ends but seriously hate it that it is Liverpool that ended it. I can't the stand my liverpool supporting friends gloating about this win.

It’s really meaningless achievement much like our win over Arsenal stopping them getting 50 unbeaten.
Only 3 points at the end of the day, same as our game v stoke tomorrow.
Don’t let hype train get you carried away! That’s their job granted.

It won't be all in vain. Hopefully we win tomorrow and the gap is down to 12 points. Citeh against Rafa Beneathus and Pardiola will be getting 2-3 points from the next two games, which would mean the lead will be down 8/9 points by end of January. Funnier things have happened.

Well, there's also nothing comparable between ending a 50 games unbeaten run and a 23 one in January, i'm pretty sure no one remembers the team that ended our unbeaten run from April 2010 and to Feb 2011 even though it went on for almost a year.

Anyway, it is a meaningless achievement i agree with that.

I'm not as optimistic as that lol. We play Spurs away after the stoke game, so ....

It's not more stupid than hoping to catch a team that has that many points when there is another breathing down our neck. We have more chances of finishing below Liverpool than City.
The league is lost, it doesn't matter if the gap is getting reduced with City, we're not winning all our remaining games.

When did United fans start throwing in the towel so early?

I was raised on last minute goals and never giving up no matter what the score is. Yet some here are happy to watch one of our local rivals dance off into the sunset all because the other team winning adds a bit of pressure to our own side. Grow a fecking pair! We're fecking Man Utd, not Arsenal. If we haven't even got the fecking bottle for a top 4 fight then what the feck is the point.

City could be down to 12 points clear of us after we play tonight. Yes it's unlikely we'll catch them, but we should sure as hell give it a good go. Jesus fecking christ.

Liverpool now have a huge confidence boost, and form momentum. As we all learnt before, games in hand count for nothing unless you get the points. The onus is now on united to make a statement and boost confidence. Scraping a 1-0 win at home to managerless stoke might get us the points but will sew the seeds of doubt.

Plus I can’t wrap my head around the fact that people would rather our biggest rivals win just so that city don’t go through the season unbeaten. I really don’t see the logic in wanting the pack to catch up for that reason. City will come a cropper somewhere where they won’t expect it.

As it stands, lfc have as much chance of winning the league as we do if not more as they have a good momentum

Are you trying to get a job as a Sky pundit?

Also its not rocket science, while historically Liverpool is United's biggest rival, they haven't been United's rival for the EPL title for a long time...which at the end of the day counts more then anything else.

City losing is something to cheer for, if you want to win the league title. There's no two ways about it.

You obviously didn’t grow up in the Liverpool era

A Liverpool win didn't even see them overtake us. Given the way the season has gone, given Chelsea and Arsenal dropped points and given that Liverpool prove time and again that they will feck up, it's hardly a betrayal to enjoy this nauseating worship of city have a temporary halt. I despise Liverpool. I never want to see them close to a title again. But yesterday's game was not some decisive fixture with anything on the line for us. Im glad city lost and I'm glad Liverpool looked like losing a 4-1 lead with eight minutes left

This this this.

There is a long long way to go and everyone wants to fold and be done with it. Typical football fans nowadays.

All it takes it for city to drop a few more points and the gap could close and put more pressure on them.

Exactly. Liverpool as usual will not keep these energy levels up, yesterday they were showing insane energy until they actually burned out and had to defend. I'm not worried in the slightest about them, they will drop many points from now until the end.

We won't catch them. But I admire the belief, they've dropped five points from last 9. Amazing how infuriating those three draws versus poor teams over xmas look now. We'd have a chance to close gap to 6 tonight.

We won't no. But we can.

They might collapse now. Might not. But if you gave most of the fans the choice to finish now with City champions and start a fresh everyone would take it.
I think theres a long way to go and anything can happen.

We'll rue the xmas period. I always said if we were within 6-8 going into March we'd be right in it. They play Chelsea Arsenal and stoke away around champions league ties.

The last thing we need is Liverpool full of confidence and hammering teams. If we finish below Liverpool last night will be seen as a turning point.

I don’t see that being comparable in the slightest. Sod English football; there’s no way United would have gained anything from a Liverpool victory in a CL final. A team that’s below us in the table taking points off one that’s above us would generally be regarded as a gap-narrowing good thing.

If we’re worried about failing to secure the fourth place trophy with so much of the season left, then we really have got problems

It's a bit weird seeing how many talk about how we will 'drop loads of points'. Have you looked at the form curve lately? I'd be surprised if we were not ahead of you at the end of this month.

This is so obvious it beggars belief that it needs pointing out. Lot of weird posts in this thread. Even if it wasn’t Liverpool then a team who’s so close behind us - in what’s gonna be a ding dong battle for CL places - picking up 3 points against City is bad news. But it was Liverpool. Which made their win even more excruciating. Pure madness to be pleased about last night’s result. The caf has officially gone to the dogs.
