Changes in Arabia

You don't think there's anything wrong with the Saudi regime?

The religious bigotry? The misogyny? The medieval punishments? The sponsoring of terrorist groups?
What I said and what you failed to understand is that it doesn't matter what I think as long as the people there like the regime, also I couldn't careless what happens there.

Its a strange succession, isn't the usual way to pass it down to your eldest son (or daughter, if you have none), why is it passed down through the brothers?

How do you know the people like the regime? Do you live in Saudi Arabia?

And which 'people' are we referring to here? The thousands of members of the Royal family? The ethnic minorities? Expats?

Usually yeah, but apparently in Saudi Arabia it goes to the brothers because they're sons of the original founder. Once they're all dead, they might then pursue a more normal route of father to son. Will be quite chaotic though since you'll have lots of sons/grandsons/great-grandsons all arguing their right, meaning some sort of conflict is bound to be created at one stage.

Its really strange, and all the brothers are very old as well. At least compared to me!

I have many members of my family living there, while for Syrians they detest living there, they say Saudi people are actually happy with the way they are living, and I don't mean the ethnic minorities who most of them doesn't like it.

I'm sure white South Africans were happy with the way they were living under Praetorian South African, Pureblood Germans in Nazi Germany too. I'm hardly surprised a Saudi male would be happy in Saudi Arabia, you can literally get away with murder there if you are of the right race/sect/sex/family/wealth

You are as only civilised as how you treat your minorities.

Flags flew half mast for this guy's demise.

If this is worth national mourning then some gal from Eastenders stubbing her toe should get a twenty one gun salute.

In South Africa they were the minorities oppressing the majority though.

Possibly because there are so many of them and you can make sure everything goes on for much longer if you keep passing it to a younger brother. King Saud had about 45 sons, evidently. They have now put some long-term plans in place by naming a couple of younger Princes (in their 50s and 60s) as the next two successors.

You've convinced me to try a Yemeni restaurant this week.

Hearing about coup d'etats always make me hungry.

Slightly odd bump but worth putting here

Michelle Obama has drawn attention to the severe restrictions placed on women in Saudi Arabia by not wearing a headscarf during a visit to the country after the death of King Abdullah.

The US first lady’s decision to not cover her hair when she and President Obama met Abdullah’s successor, King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, on Tuesday caused a stir on social media, prompting the hashtag #michelle_obama_notveiled.

Nothing controversial in her dress. She was very conservative in pants and a long jacket which is a norm for non-Muslim/Arab women visiting the country.

I read an article BBC highlighting how nobody making a big deal out of this was the big deal. News these days, eh?
Strange as it was pretty much everywhere. Click bait stuff I image.

I think the controversial part was the not wearing of the headscarf although after I posted the article I found out that there's been a number of high profile women who have not wore the headscarf before (Angela Merkel,Hillary Clinton,Condoleezza Rice)

There is no compulsion on non-Muslim women to wear a headscarf in the kingdom.

So...who is in control of Bab el Mandeb right now?

Egypt will interfere militarily if Yemen's Bab Al-Mandab strait is blocked: Suez Canal head

The head of Egypt's Suez Canal Authority said Wednesday his country would send troops to Yemen in case extremist groups attempt to block Bab Al-Mandab strait that links the Red Sea to the Gulf of Aden, Al-Ahram Arabic news website reported.

Lieutenant General Mohab Mamish said that Egypt "will not accept" closure of the waterway which "directly affects the Suez Canal and national security." Mamish said events in Yemen are under constant review and that the military is ready to intervene if the strait is blocked.

Most ships that pass through Bab Al-Mandab are either going to or coming from Egypt's Suez Canal, one of the country's main sources of income and foreign currency flow.

Yemen has been gripped by chaos since Shia Houthi rebels took control of the capital and challenged the central government. The poor Arabian Peninsula state is also fighting a local Al-Qaeda branch on its territories, one of the strongest offshoots of the group.

Houthis recently claimed control over a number of strategic posts in the capital, Sanaa.

Breaking: GCC decides to intervene, operation "war" already commenced

So, will Iran assist the Houthis in fighting the GCC and Yemeni government? Or are they limited with their efforts in Iraq?

Iran can't do anything I think. it would be military and political suicide. They'd be fighting the GCC + Egypt +Jordan, Morocco, all Arabs + Pakistan which borders them - Pakistan just announced its support for the strikes - + the US + Israel. Yes, that's how things would progress.

Edit: + Turkey probably

Of course they won't do anything conspicuous, but they can continue to support it in the way they have supported Hezbollah, with money, weapons, leadership, intel, and some training. They have already been, allegedly, supporting the Houthis for years (http://www.reuters.com/article/2014/12/15/us-yemen-houthis-iran-insight-idUSKBN0JT17A20141215 and http://www.wsj.com/articles/yemens-houthis-seek-iran-russia-and-china-ties-1425664867). They've just now drawn the serious ire of the Sunni neighbors who are doing something about it. Iran is happy to create problems for the Saudis and to threaten stability within the region. The Houthis have also apparently reached out to Russia and China as a hedge against serious intervention in the conflict by the UN or the West.

Israel? Why should we bother with this IS/AQ vs. Iran quarrel?

Now who wanted to add nuclear proliferation into the mix again...?

That's nice and all, but if they wanted to confront Da'esh and Al-Qaeda, they'd do well to look internally.

In true Saudi fashion their intervention would be running crying to their more powerful allies begging for bombs to be dropped. Just as they'd done in Iraq and Syria, and just as they had tried in the case of Iran.

Reports of Egyptian navy taking control of Bab el-Mandeb, confronting Iranian vessels in the process.

The same puppets of the US want to form a coalition, who idly sat back and watched as Assad butchered the people of Syria. Exasperating logic.

They're hardly sitting back. Where do you think the FSA, Al-Nusra and ISIS are getting their funding from?

Definitely not from Pakistan, Morocco, and some of the Gulf states.

Not sure about Pakistan and Morocco, but Qatar and Saudi Arabia have definitely had a hand in arming the aforementioned groups.

it would be a golden chance for Netanyahu to target Iran militarily , as a partner in an international coalition.

Hell no. The world doesn't need anyone to do anything stupid against countries with nuclear teeth

So I assume living with a nuclear Iran is what you advocate ?

Actually, the Obama administration is currently in the process of negotiating a deal with the Iranians to cut back on their Nuclear capabilities in exchange for some of the sanctions being relaxed. Netanyahu and presumably some Gulf Arab states are doing their best to sabotage it since they're hellbent on military confrontation...something we could do less of.
