Champions League Round of 16 (13th Feb - 14th Mar)

All this talk of a poor Porto side is funny. Ok they were and are shit league but they have beaten Liepzig at home and the French champions home and away this season. Like some of you have said United would have most probably scraped a 1 - 0 , lost or drew.

I was on about the Europa game. As the players lined up and we sang You'll Never Walk Alone some of the United players were looking over their shoulders at the Kop. Either in admiration or shitting it or possibly both.

Fair play to City, Liverpool and Spurs, showed English football in a good light and they have really put the pressure on us to perform!

My pessimistic view is that we may be the ones to let the side down! It would be great to thrash Sevilla 4 nil but I think a 1-1 draw away from home and a 1 nil win at OT

Were you on the booze before the game?

Is it just me or we have far too many Liverpool fans at redcafe. They're all here, about 15 of them. Talking big like they won the CL final.

Who exactly is talking like we've won the CL final ? I'm here coz I'm bored. What about you ?
Are you the one who appears only when Liverpool is doing good? Maybe I've mixed you with someone.
Anyway I don't have the need to justify to you why I'm here.

Haven't posted much on the footie forum for a while now (win or lose). Like I say, I've got time on my hands & thought I'd indulge myself with a little bit of sarcasm & irony with regards to Roberto Firmino. I'm not banging the big 'we're gonna win the CL' drum, & as far as I can see, no other Liverpool fan is either. So what's your beef ? Are you pissed off mainly because we won, or because Liverpool fans on here are talking about us beating Porto 5-0 ? I mean, how very dare they.

You wrote a lot. You really are bored.
As I said there's too many of you. And some were crying over not mentioning your game enough.
In any case I expect the same amount of you here when you lose.

The only team who are capable of beating Real over two legs is us.

Everyone else shits the bed against them. It’s psychological more than anything else.

That's what I've been saying. Most teams see 'Real Madrid' and they get scared. Real see 'Barcelona' and get scared :D

Anyway I'm finally glad the Prem is getting good representation now that the joke club Arsenal with the eternal clown Wenger isn't in it to embarrass England as usual.

I wrote a lot :wenger:

This coming from someone who's written nearly 13,000 posts in just over 2 years. Christ, how f**king bored must you be then ?

So what exactly would you want from the mods ? Have them ban all Liverpool supporters from the Caf ? Don't you embrace diversity ? Maybe the mods can create safe-spaces for sensitive souls like yourself who struggle when opposition teams you don't like actually win a match, & you get opposition supporters wanting to talk about it. Or maybe you'd prefer it if we're only welcome on here when we lose so you can feast on our misery.

How fecking dare you come into the Champions League thread and discuss your Champions League match that you played last night. Get the feck out of here! The absolute cheek of these rival fans discussing their game in the correct thread. Disgusting.

You seem very agitated.
I meant you wrote a lot in one post.

Finally someone. ;)

Spurs are a good side and while anything is possible in football, they certainly have the advantage for the second leg. At 2 - 0 up, at home, Juve had their chance to put Spurs to the sword but it was they who ‘soiled’ themselves. Hope Spurs see it through.
Juve is a huge Italian club with a profound football philosophy. They'll surprise the average beer-drinking English fan at Wembley. Matuidi will be back and make Dier look like a lobotomized British lumber jack, while Dybala will open up the slow Tottenham defensive line.

I almost, almost, want Utd to thrash Sevilla 5-0 too. Mainly cos Sevilla have been so fecking lucky against us so many times and I want to see some comeuppance. Perhaps because there are actually some nice Utd fans on here who are suffering :p.

But mainly because English clubs are on a roll and for once there is some sense of solidarity. Maybe it's just Brexit being so close.

I'm pretty worried about Liverpool now. On their day they can take any big side. Here's hoping they cock it up at some point.

He's undoubtedly their weak link, no question. If Spurs had better full-backs - along with an upgrade on Dier - they'd be an awesome team.

I'd give them a shot against any of the English sides, including ourselves. I feel Barcelona, Bayern, PSG and Madrid would all beat them, however.
I'm not so sure. Look at the City game just a few weeks ago. Liverpool are unbelievable against the big sides. It's the shitter sides they tend to struggle against. They're also great away from home. I think they'd have massively punished some of the Real and PSG defending I saw last night.

I'm quietly confident they won't win the thing but at the same time, I wouldn't be that surprised if they did.

Although Klopp has a horrendous record in finals so there's always that.

They blitzed Porto last night, arguably the worst side still in the competition. The best sides all possess fire power capable of destroying that naive Liverpool defence. I can't wait to see Barcelona or Madrid running at them.

I'd be wary of them against the English sides on the basis of familiarity and the Liverpool players would take confidence from the fact they know they can beat any of them on their day. Against Barcelona et al, that confidence saps away and is replaced by uncertainty. If we know anything about this Liverpool team (and Klopp teams in general) is that they're a confidence team and when they're bordering on arrogant approaching big games, they generally produce good performances. Throw Madrid or Barcelona into the equation and the self-doubt creeps in, in my opinion.

I actually think an English team is the most likely to beat them!

I think Barca or Real would struggle with the early blitz from Liverpool as they're not really used to it, I've seen it happen with them and Spanish teams before, with much worse Pool sides than this one. I'd still fancy Barca to come out on top, harder to say with Real due to their struggles this season. I think Bayern would beat Pool handily enough though, cause their defense is strong enough to deal with the front three.

Will be a really interesting quarter's this year, due to the improvement of the English sides the CL is at it's strongest in years.

Brexit has done strange things to people. We are just craving a big Champions League win, can't think of last time we thrashed a decent side 4 or 5 nil in CL, Bayer Leverkusen 4 years ago, maybe Milan before that 8 years ago?

I'm pretty worried about Liverpool now. On their day they can take any big side. Here's hoping they cock it up at some point.

Yes it's a bit of a gift and a curse for Klopps side though, I always look at his teams as being great for a cup run but there is always the chance they will get turned over by a side with different tactics. Probably why he has failed in finals, against more tactically astute managers. Teams looking to go toe to toe with Liverpool falls right into Klopps hands.

Klopp's Dortmund was better on all bar one or two occasions when they faced Madrid in the CL. You can say that his teams' approach is to lower the quality of the opposition and (even Klopp said so) to get them at their level. This leads to huge results against teams with far better individual quality but is less efficient against worse teams. Pretty much the opposite to Pep's approach which is trying to dominate the opponent no matter what, which makes them very consistent against smaller teams but has lead to huge losses against better teams that can exploit their weaknesses.

Good post. Agree with that.

Klopp's dortmund was just a better side than us in 2012/13. We were in the midst of a civil war in the dressing room

13/14 we disintegrated them at their own game at home, then nearly capitulated in germany(without Cristiano and with Di Maria playing a day after a bout of illness had caused him to lose 5 kgs in 24 hours iirc)

I'm not implicating that they always smash big teams, I'm just saying that their style is more suited to big games and opponents that are trying to go toe on toe with them and more often than not make them raise their game against teams with much better players, which makes those games basically closer to a coin flip rather than how it actually SHOULD be when considering both teams' quality. Dortmund was also in a pretty bad form back then when you guys smashed them in Madrid. Tbh I think that Madrid in the last few years was also a team that had a similar approach to Klopp's Dortmund in big games with their fast-paced and direct style, as well as Enrique's Barca and Heynckes Bayern, just with much better players.

What have you done to all that money you had for players sold over the years? You had a conveyor belt of players getting sold for profit at one point like Monaco, European football pretty much guaranteed every season.. I wasn't expecting this to be that much of a walk in the park tonight, whats happened?
They are under FFP intervention, portuguese clubs have to sell their best players all seasons to balance budgets, players missing, bad decisions by Conceição, it's funny to read some comments here.

I mean Van Dijk cost more to Liverpool than all 18 portuguese clubs spend in a season, and people here think it's possible to compete, I mean losing 5:0 is not normal, but expecting clubs who can spend 100 million euros in 1 or 2 players to struggle with Portuguese, Dutch, Belgian, Russian or Turkish clubs is a bit naive.

When we’re good, we’re really good.

Porto were hideous though. Mane’s first goal was so poor from their keeper and they left so many gaps after we scored the second.

It’s nice that we can already think about the quarter finals though. I really don’t want City.

Should be some colossal face offs in the quarter finals! Mouth watering stuff.
Just hope United are switched on and we're in there!

Imagine 4 English clubs, Barcelona, Real/PSG, Bayern, and one other.

You'd want to be drawing the "One other" for certain!!
