Champions League Round of 16 (13th Feb - 14th Mar)

He cleared Vertonghen then decided to allow himself to fall after realizing the ball was out of reach. Good call from the ref.

He tried to clear Vertonghen and Vertonghen went in for seconds on his other foot. Both of his legs got taken out and he tried to carry on but was forced to go to ground.

Penalty box referees are basically paid to watch matches. Ridiculous not to have the balls to call for the pen there

It’s obscene that people’s counter to VAR is to get more officials on the field, when these officials behind the goal already do such a stellar job  I have literally never once seen them make a call or do anything

There's tons of contact. Crap tackle, penalty every day.
I agree crap tackle, if it was a pen I’d have said nothing, I just fecking hate the delayed dive after contact. My opinion was that there wasn’t much contact at all and he easily could have carried on.

Attacking play in Italy must be woeful for Juve to have such a good defensive record, over these 2 games they have looked incredibly vulnerable.

Terrible tackle, little bit of contact, but I’m glad the red didn’t give it for that fecking theatrical dive about 2 seconds after contact.

It wouldn't have been a red card. The DOGSO law has changed now where it's not a pk and a red if there was an attempt at the ball. SO worst case it would be a yellow card and a penalty. Just a penalty would have been the right call for me...

Son and Firminho, underrated players in Premiere league

Anyone saying that was not a pen needs to look at the replays. Verthongen gets nothing on the ball and clearly touches costa on the ankle (more han enough to bring him down)

Son is so much better than Alli. Personally think Alli is pretty average.

He caught him twice that's why he went down

He didn't dive

This will not end well for Juve. Spurs with Son and Kane have it to easy.

They do feck all indeed and they get paid for it. Cracking job tbh, no pressure and lots to gain.

The ball was out of reach because he’d been hindered in his run to it

My immediate reaction was penalty. Then I saw the replay and just have no sympathy when players go down like that.

Sometimes Juve overdo it with the "old guard" thing. They have too many old timers in midfield and defense, some fresh legs are needed.

Would take half an hour, then they would award the pen, by which time the player taking it will be sufficiently disoriented enough to miss it.

Haha you’re probably right, although after the half hour, I think they’d still make the incorrect call

For the first time, I think I want all the PL teams to make the next round (would have backed Spurs regardless) but think it would be so cool to have 5 of the 8 teams in the QFs.

Can't see Chelsea beating Barca in Spain. But realistically I'm certain there will be at least one all English clash in the next stage.

Can’t believe people are saying that wasn’t a pen  about as clear as day as you’ll see.

Having said that, Costa is stupid throwing in that theatrical dive at the end of the foul, or else he'd have probably got the decision.

Clearly a penalty.

I don't even understand the thinking of the referee.
Either he tought he got the ball, so it's a corner.
Or he did touch him, so it's a penalty.
Or he didn't touch him, so it's a dive and a yellow.
Typical "we're clueless to take a decision so we'll choose one randomly" moment

To be honest I’m just speaking of a personal disdain towards divers. Probably was a pen, like I said it’s a bad tackle, but of course he fecking dove. It’s Douglas Costa too, the man has priors.

To be fair, from the side angle it does look like Costa jumps out of the way while running, from behind it looks like clear a penalty.
