Champions League Quarter Finals (5th - 13th Apr)

Look what United have done to me. I had no clue there was Champions League football tonight till I saw the 1st Pool goal on Instagram.

FmL.

City at home to such average Atletico team have not troubled Oblak at all in that half and some think they'll be able to beat Liverpool at the weekend?

It's a 50/50 as the ball is there to be won by either side. However, the team with the most intensity and work rate will generally get there first. I'd also be fairly sure City and Liverpool practice winning the ball in various scenarios.
It is a hallmark of the best coached sides(city, liverpool, bayern, etc) that they turn 50/50 balls into 80/20 balls consistently. It's not even about intensity, they're simply better positioned for it

City pretty poor here for me, really cautious with their passing, no movement in behind and no one getting in to the box. Mahrez and Sterling completely anonymous, Ake offers no forward threat from Left Back. Think Foden could be key.

You kind of have to be, one wrong move with your defenders high up the pitch and it's a goal for Atletico. There's no space to get in behind, do you see where Atletico's back line is positioned

I do agree City can look to have a few more players making runs into the box, but the lack of space will make it hard.

I mean Luis Diaz wasn't exactly a secret, he was the best player in portugal by far and consistently really good in CL for a couple years...

Put your money where your mouth is, there's money to be made in the markets if you're bullish on Liverpool

Nah, Bayern have a chance.

Benfica is wank, Ajax should have won that tie but they couldn't score for shit.

This

You have to hand it to them

I wonder if there's ever any moaning from their players about playing like that or whether they just see it as a natural thing, like 'don't question the boss' or 'we're the underdogs so what do you expect?'. I don't wanna turn it into a united discussion but you can bet your life our players would throw a strop.

Why didn't griezmann take the foul there, could have been a red

Never want Simeone to step foot at this club. The way he sees football is a disgrace. So joyless.

Not that I’m watching but judging by the scorline, the inevitable shithouse tactics surely are coming in the second half from Atletico

I mean, I know Liverpool will win the CL, but atleast make them work for it FFS. Another easy tie, they're through in the 1st leg

Simeone has total control at that club. If they don’t like it they’re gone.

Piss poor from Konate, what was he doing?

I honestly think this is their best way of matching up to better teams at this point bar a complete team teardown and rebuild. It's gotten them trophies too so can't complain...

City really need to start bombarding the Atletico goal or they will soon run out of time.

Simeone was a very good player technically and tactically and played with many great attacking players. Really weird how he simply refuses to play anything else than utterly defensive underdog football.

Not a yellow card for stopping a counterattack?

Such a conundrum. I hate Liverpool but am fairly indifferent to City and yet I cannot deny I love the way Liverpool play whereas City suck all of the fun out of football with their hundreds of sideways passes. I have been flicking between the games but I think I am just going to have to go gouge my eyes out instead.

Not many teams in world football have the discipline and maturity in defense that Atletico Madrid have. They don't fall for your basic tricks. Third man, off ball runs... They don't even bother pressing in certain zones, they just jog back. As a result they are very hard to pull apart. They force you down into the abyss with them. It's no surprise they've knocked out Liverpool and United in recent years.

Yeah. People may or may not like Simeone and Atletico, but one has to give the a credit for everything you said

I have no issues with how Atletico play, whatever works I say!
