Champions League Quarter Finals (3rd - 11th April)

Never a penalty.

And you really need a very good reason to give a penalty in the last seconds of such a game. And yes, time and place make a difference.

It is obvious that this referee is not good enough for such big occasions. Unfortunately, they had to send someone from England because that's how those things work. But there are no good referees from England. (As there are zero top managers from England ... sorry, that's the truth).

I don't even know where to begin. A referee must award a foul made in the fifth minute of a given Champions League quarters the same way he must award one if the same foul is made in the ninetieth minute, regardless of circumstances.

Too much subjectivity is not a good thing. There will be an impossible standard for officials to maintain and, in the long run, will only bring the game into disrepute.

Refs been verbally abused and player has made physical contact. Red card all day long doesn't matter who it is or how bloody upset they are.
Except for Hart?

"Benatia should have been sent off ages before"

Okay? So should Ronaldo if we're going to mention anything. Point is anytime remotely controversial happens in the UCL the Spanish side (usually Madrid) seem to benefit from it. It's absolutely infuriating as a fan to watch it year after year.
Seriously? The other lot are not called Uefalona for nothing. The name Ovebro ring a bell?
Roma for me. I'm just frustrated with the usual suspects making it to the semi-finals every year. At least this year we've got Pool and Roma making it through somehow. It's good for the game.

What's the point in having a Barca/Madrid/Bayern/{Insert freebie} semi-final every year?
Except for the fact Barca only made the SF ONCE in the last 5 seasons, you have a point. ;)

Silver lining is I still think you have a much better chance at beating scousers so there’s that. Don’t disappoint now.
They won the last final that we played. It would be surreal 95% of redcafe supporting Madrid
It's not the same, but it shouldn't make one bit of difference for the referee. I wanted Juve to pull it off, but it was a right call.
It should be, but Madrid have a history behind, which can lead to a certain demerit of our trophies because of these last minute decisions

Does any of you really believe that if the situation was reversed, Oliver would give a penalty to the Italians to make it 0-4?

In front of 80,000 Real fans? In the 93 minute? A non-existent (or even "controversial") penalty to the Italians? Do you really think it it possible? And a straight red card to Ronaldo for pushing the referee and complaining? Is there a single person who believes that this is remotely in the realm of possibilities?

I am too old to be this naive. Yes, place and time ALWAYS mater.

Agreed. Why they sat off is beyond me. One more goal and Real would need two. Bizarre management.

We know from watching these games that the fear of the away goal can take on an almost palpable force in that scenario. Juve removed it from the equation in the last 30.

Yes, I do. The ref would definitely have given a that penalty to Juve, because it was a penalty.

That "non existent" shit is bollocks, because it was a foul and therefore a penalty.

Yes Ronaldo would have been sent off for pushing the ref, because pushing the ref is a red card offence.

Are you dim?

I just have this feeling that Liverpool are gonna win the thing.
The absolute fecking paranoia of RedCafe posters about Liverpool having some kind of chance at getting their 6th European trophy... Get a grip!

Yes. Yes. Yes. No. Yes. And yes.

Not sure how old you are.

No they don't.

That’s got nothing to do with your original argument

That was a mistake. This wasn't. Refs make mistakes and this time he didn't. The Hart incident is irrelevant.

It's not difficult.
I actually think he got the pen decision right and the Buffon sending off imo was a little harsh, but I can see why.

Come on guys no need to rationalize the decision. It's pretty obvious what the pattern is. Every time Real get into trouble or the game has a 50/50 feel to it the ref produces a red card/penalty or both in their favour. Today, Bayern last year and Nani's red are just three examples on top of my head. To all the fans saying it was a penalty remember Nani's red. So that's how gutted the Juve fans are

Honestly I doubt ref would give it in the other end.

Great!!!

Here is someone who believes Oliver would give the Italians a soft penalty in the 93 minute, in Real's home, in the CL quarterfinals!!!

Keep believing man!!!

Man he hits the man before the ball, he pushes him down from the back before swinging the leg, and the ball comes off lucas chest. Doesn't matter one zilch that he touches the ball

Lucas was already falling down, it is a penalty that can be given but definetly not stonewall a soft one given at the 93rd minute, while last week the one on Cuadrado was way clearer and obviously not given. In any case somebody said that penalty is when referee whistles so that was it.

Congrats to Real and even bigger ones to Juve for tonight's game and also last week's one that was not at all as bad as the score suggested

Yeah I think a referee would call a foul. What a horrible world I must live in where I expect referees to do their job!!!

p.s. It wasn't soft.

Maybe not and in that case Oliver makes a huge mistake, but then again this has little to do with your initial argument. Main point is, time and place must not matter on a refereeing decision. Ever.

way clearer no but yes it was a penalty on cuadrado

Tonight's game proved that Allegri was right all along, as is often the case. Another weird result where one team dominates and creates chances and the other scores. We deserved to go through in the end but yeah, the two results are weird but the aggregate is a fair reflection of the tie as a whole

yes good referees read games, this was a very dubious penalty it is ridiculous to give it at that stage, red card to Buffon also a joke

What a mental round of CL football. Madness.

Real and Liverpool have got to hold the edge in terms of the semi's. But I'll always hold a soft spot for wanting a team who are rolling domestically to win too so I guess I'm leaning towards Bayern and I'd be quite the hypocrite if I said I wanted Roma to win....given it'd smell of the similarity of Liverpool/Chelsea wins, which show both the absolute absurdity and greatness of the tournament I guess.
