Champions League Knockouts (12 Aug - 23rd Aug)

Smooth lob pass for (I think) Gnabry's goal too! I was never 100% sure about him, but he was totally convincing today.

Yea neither was I when he moved from Schalke. Thought he regressed after the long term injury but this season, especially in 2020, he's been really good. A pure B2B midfielder.

Now if only our 80 million € CB could play instead of Boateng... *sigh*

Muller passing, positioning and reading of the game is world class.

In the Youtube age where it's all about flashy highlights he gets underrated. He is among the best players of his generation.

Most defenders are decent on the ball, but they aren't breaking 3 lines and playing through balls from defense. Moving the ball and occasionally forward doesn't make playing out the back a necessity or end all be all like way to many people think it does. If you're scoring 65 goals a season in the league, and you need 80 to 90 goals, your defense playing the ball forward isn't going to close that gap. It's the quality of upfront players from midfield and attack and coaching. Defenders defend and you cannot win if you cannot stop leaking goals. That's exactly Chelsea's problem and what we're seeing today with Barca.

Totally agree. Playing out from the back is Vogue because some successful teams have done this (never mind the fact they won was usually because of insane attacking talent).

Got nothing to do with Ronaldo because anyone with a brain and eyes knows that Messi is a better footballer than Ronaldo has ever been, regardless of this stupid obsession with trophies. However Messi should have followed Pep to City because Barca are as badly run as we are. Wasted the last 4 years of his career at that joke club.
 Absolute tripe.

Lay off the juice, it's affecting your posting.

I think the verdict on those Ajax players is still out.
They are still very young and Ziyech didn't even play a game for Chelsea yet.

Bayern showing how important physicality and fitness are. Guys like Davies, Gnabry, Goretzka, Lewandowski, Kimmich, Muller seem to run all game long.

Whatever about the younger ones but Muller will still be running as much in his seventies. The guy is a machine.

Most Germans study English for a few years in school.

A few years ago I was there and needed to speak with someone at a business. He said he spoke a little English but hadn't used it in a while so may have difficulties. I said it was ok, I spoke a little German and together we could muddle through.

He then proceeded to speak flawless English and explained some fairly technical stuff without a hiccup.
Nice you have that experience but I have to disagree. Many Germans of the generation that is now 40+ have pretty woeful English though it is mandatory in
My old man has been on about wanting us to sign Muller for more than a decade. Even throughout the last couple of weaker years he just loves the guy.

I just got the smuggest "told you so" phonecall you've ever heard.
Signing Müller is pointless if you don't understand his way of playing, and in order to do that you need to be able to think outside the box. Few trainers have that gift, Ancelotti, Kovac and even apparently Löw don't. Not many do in fact.

This hasn't aged well.

Is that their official handle ? If yes, small time from them. You cannot get involved with the player comments that happened before the game.

Just enjoy your massive win guys rather than playing this game in twitter.

Strange. That was in 2009 and he was easily mid forties. Was in Berlin mind you, maybe that makes a difference?

They only posted "EIGHT", which is totally fine. The rest is just people reacting to it.

The downside of this result, is that it's going to be synonymous with the scoreline for years to come.

Prior to tonight, 8-2 would make people think of that game v Arsenal. With a Anderson+Cleverley midfield, and 2 goals from Ashley Young.

I'm from Bavaria which has one of the two best education systems in the country. Berlin, not so much. Of course there are exceptions :)

Still the English level of many of my compatriots makes me cringe.
We may be above Italy or France, but no match to for example sweden

Absolutely insane game. The minutes from 2:1 until 4:1 and 6:2 to 8:2 really felt like Germany - Brazil.

I absolutely love the work rate and team spirit of this team. Our pressing was insane. There is a really special mentality to this team that heavily reminds me of the 2013 team.

Judging by pure skill, we had better teams between 2013 and today. But never since then did we have such a well oiled machine where everyone runs and fights for the team.

The interviews of the players, Flick and Brazzo after the game were also great. They were happy, of course, but everyone said, that it was just one little step to reach their goal and that they will need to focus on the next game by tomorrow morning.

I just love this team.

And I really enjoy to read the posts around here from United fans and fans of other clubs all around the world.

Cheers guys, have a good night.

I think that's a bit of an oversimplification. People think playing out from the back is just about a contribution to your attacking approach, but it's also a defensive strategy; a way of breaking the press. Barca struggled so much today because they couldn't handle Bayern's pressing and lacked control of the ball in your own third. Ideally, drilling top ball playing defenders in playing out from the back gives you two advantages; one the defensive relief of playing through the press, and two an attacking advantage of moving the ball up the pitch quickly with many of your opponents caught too high up and not set to defend.

How original suggesting someone's been drinking to disparage a post. Whether you like it or not the fact is that Messi is clearly a better footballer than Ronaldo. Forget about achievements and just focus on ability and there is distance between them. They are the two best players of all time but Messi is simply the clear better player and has been since 2009.

Uhh, if there's one thing he ought to know better is that you don't provoke the Germans. That totally explains the 2-8 scoreline. Was the same with Brazil, too. Every single time someone makes fun of Germans, they respond on the pitch.

How original suggesting that the people that disagree with them don't have "a brain and eyes". Saying Messi is better is fine- but don't insult those with a differing opinion.

Fair point but its quite simple to be honest. Career achievements it's Ronaldo on top but ability as a footballer then clearly it's Messi and by a distance.

Anyway not the thread for it. I worry that despite Bayern tonight that an in form City can do them. We beat Roma 7 1 and then lost to Milan. City are far superior to Barca and could have done the same to them tonight on their day.

Good luck man city.

To think potchettino pretty got the sack on the back of being thrashed by Bayern but doesnt look all too bad on him now with how bayern are destroying teams.
In fairness he/Spurs were twatted by Kovac's side and he's regarded as their Moyes IIRC.

Flick's side is different gravy.

Bayern can be got at if you beat their press. At 1-1 barca had some good chances. Bayern are the favourites to win the CL now but no team is unbeatable.

They are both easily in the top 3 in their position in the world at 19. I'd argue that is 'generational'.
I suppose there’s always going to be differences in opinions, Davies is brilliant, perhaps I’m just sick of the fecking sight of “generational” as a label. The laughing faces were a bit dismissive of the original poster’s views so I take that bit of the post back at least.

Firstly, they are not the best two players of all time. Maradona, Pele, Cruyff were certainly better than both.

Second, there have been quite a few years where Ronaldo has been the best in the world.

You are wrong on both points, what's next?

Ronaldo was never Bette Than Messi. Ever. It’s the fact that Eder, bale, and Ramos scored the goals that they did made some people feel that way.

Incredible, incredible performance by Bayern. My dream is to see United give Barca, Real or any big team a beating like that. Unfortunately, even at our peak, we were not capable of a performance like that. I think our best performance was against Juve in that semi-final in 1999.
