Champions League Knockouts (12 Aug - 23rd Aug)

Yep. City might score against Bayern, but Bayern will score against City. Would laugh if Lyon knocked them out.

I hope so. The biggest pain for me would be a defeat to Pep's City in a semi final in UCL. In a one of game anything can happen.

(Pep has always lost in semis with Bayern, so I cannot accept to lose against his new club in a semi)

Muller is such an odd player. He doesn't have one superb aspect to his game, yet year on year produces

Elite mentality. You can see it in his post match press conference - the guy is just a born champion.

The Roy Keane of forward play.

How is Muller’s English so good having never played in England?
You’d almost believe that some foreigners learned the language in their own countries.

Seriously though, Germans have a reputation for learning languages almost faultlessly; grammar syntax, accent. Having taught English to foreign students in a previous life, I have first hand knowledge of this

There’s a massive overrating of City going on on these shores in my opinion. BT doing some sort of ‘they will love to play against Bayern‘s defence’. City still have to get past Lyon, which isn’t a given at all IMO.

This. Plus his reading of space too. His movement and intelligence causes so many problems. That in itself is a quality.

Let’s just hope that Bayern haven’t peaked. Sad that I have to back them but they are the best bet to beat City.

It's the language spoken in the highest amount of countries in the world, so it'll be a big part of of a lot of countries education systems.

Lucky for us English nationals who were crap at languages ourselves!

Is it me or do all the commentators sound gutted that their darlings at Messi FC got absolutely ripped apart?

Yep - which makes them getting battered all the more pleasurable.
Except last year obviously!

I've been having a browse.

A lot of them seem to be harbouring under the delusion that getting spanked in a Champions League QF is rock bottom. They're in for a rude awakening.
They are fairly insulated in their own league with how it’s set up and I don’t really see them not getting out of CL groups-though we have in the past to be fair. I suppose it’s not too long ago they were playing UEFA cup in the grand scheme of things. Could go on a Madrid-esque run of not getting past the last 16 if they aren’t careful!

Yeah I don't get it either. I reckoned Bayern would do City before tonight.

City are not good this year at all. Bayern would have to be favourites if City make it through Lyon.

Not in terms of physical or technical talent, but he's clearly one of, if not the, most intelligent players around. He just knows how to play the game effectively. Must be said that he also has an awkward style that makes him look even worse on the ball than he actually is.

Unfortunately, the Tories have used their algorithms to determine that the final score is Barcelona 2 - 0 Bayern Munich.

Agree with this. City have lost 9 times in the league alone, and Arsenal just outwitted then in their most recent game. Their balance in midfield hasn’t been right all season and they will have a dodgy left back, a makeshift CB and Kyle Walker up against those Davies overlaps that killed Semedo tonight.

If City get past Lyon, I would be very shocked if they beat this Bayern team, even with their own weaknesses.

Most Germans study English for a few years in school.

A few years ago I was there and needed to speak with someone at a business. He said he spoke a little English but hadn't used it in a while so may have difficulties. I said it was ok, I spoke a little German and together we could muddle through.

He then proceeded to speak flawless English and explained some fairly technical stuff without a hiccup.

It was mentioned before: His main skill is intelligence. And he's willing to work for his team, e.g. as press leader.

Exactly. No Aguero plus a defence that has lost them games they've dominated, against an all round strong team.

Let's hope it pans out that way. City blagging the cup would be a horrible end to the season.

While it would be funny to see Lyon beat City, I think Bayern vs City would be a cracking match to watch.

Come to think of it when I went to Germany on a uni trip, communication was no issue whereas in Barcelona we needed the assistance of two fluent Spanish speakers on our course

It depends on the manager. He was shit under Kovac, but looks a different player now. Buying him and hoping he may or may not work out is not useful. But Flick knows him inside out and thats why he plays fantastic currently.

tbf when playing for Bayern he said exactly the same before we played Madrid (Bayern the best team in the world). Just a cheap way to get sympathy from your fans.

Oh yeah, for sure. It's just funny in hindsight. If he's going to make statements like that, his own performance (and his team's) on the pitch needs to back up those words.

I'm looking forward to all of the memes.

He was bad under Ancelotti and Kovac who both had no defined tactical concept and had an approach based on giving the players freedom to do what they wanted on the pitch.

He's been great under Louis van Gaal, very good under Jupp Heynckes, exceptional under Guardiola and continues to be very good under Flick.

It makes perfect sense, too. Being a player who relies on making the right reads and decisions at all times he suffers if he has to create something out of nothing but flourishes in a well oiled tactical set-up.

Exactly. You can add that he can display best his skills in pressing and possession play: He is willing to run like nobody else, and with the ball he is always unpredictable.

Bayern showing how important physicality and fitness are. Guys like Davies, Gnabry, Goretzka, Lewandowski, Kimmich, Muller seem to run all game long.

No love for my man Goretzka? :(

Absolute machine today, harried the Barca midfield to no end. Loved his late runs into the box as well

pace, power, technique, determination. They have it all, very impressive on all fronts. Looked super fit in the last minutes as well,

Smooth lob pass for (I think) Gnabry's goal too! I was never 100% sure about him, but he was totally convincing today.
