Celebrity Allegations, #MeToo etc

Katie Perry has been accused of sexual misconduct by a man and a woman.

She allegedly pants the man at some sort of social even Infront of all the guests, and was too full on with a woman (a reporter actually) at another.

Perverted old men and young girls willing to give anything to get rich and famous. What could go wrong.

Call me old fashioned but if I'm a young girl and some sleazy director asks me up to his bedroom to go over lines or whatever. I know I'm not going up there to read lines.

Don't get me wrong. This is an abuse of power. However what the feck were these girls thinking?

I'm not putting the blame on the girls but they surely knew what was expected of them.

Maybe I am too a degree. They put their career and millions of dollars above their principals. Maybe their parents told them to do it that way.

Its controversial but of course these girls take some blame. The problem is blame is not the right view and if you're under 18 your mind is not even mature enough to make rationale decisions.

For girls who are adults it depends. But it's a bit like saying your fault for being rich when you get mugged.

Dangerous territory when you start blaming victims for their part in sexual assaults.

That said, I watched the R Kelly doc over the weekend and the number of parents who were allowing their teenage daughters to spend time with the guy, even after the infamous 'piss tape' and marriage to Aaliyah was frankly staggering.

I wouldn't let my daughter within 100 miles of that cnut.

I dunno, not every case is the same. There’s clearly a lot of genuinely tragic cases where women have been the victims of some predatory asshole abusing their power, but no doubt there’s also a few savvy woman sleeping their way to the top. I don’t think you have to make a clean sweep and say they’re all the same as eachother, just as long as we’re focusing on the former.

Depends on what you mean by blame.

First of as @2 man midfield mentioned, each case is different and this is what makes this whole situation so sad. We tend not to listen to victims anyway because of the few incidents in which victims were really dumb or pretty much had themselves to blame. These cases are really rare if you look at statistics but as humans it gets etched in the back of your mind and it's really unfair on the vast majority of victims.

The most important thing is to treat each case properly and to its merit.

Regarding R Kelly, no doubt that guy is sick in the head but some of these parents take the blame as well. That one woman in particular, sparkles. She boiled my blood. You're letting a 14 year old spend time alone with R Kelly when you knew he was a little weird with younger girls and you yourself felt uncomfortable too?

Now people like Sparkles can join #muteRKelly and protest but women like her definitely have a part to play in this. That 14 year old girls life is ruined. She needs adults to make right decisions for her.

And yeah then the two women that are with him right now, they're parents decided they could fly around with them AFTER the whole piss tape scandal. Cry all you want now if you're gonna make decisions that are that dumb. The girls are adults but they might just be dumb airheads who enjoy the attention they are getting in Kelly's Harem.

These things aren't always black and white and unfortunately, that's how people like R Kelly and Kevin Spacey escape prison time.

Dissapointing but not hugely surprising given the system is stacked against the accuser and Weinstein no doubt has viciously proficient lawyers. Not hard to see why their lawyers would advise them to settle, or indeed to imagine how those who refuse to do so could end up worse off.

So he wouldn't even be paying a penny or accepting culpability? Damn.
He had sexual misconduct costs written into his contract at Weinstein company whereby he had a sliding scale of penalty payments for any sexual misconduct accusations made against him. Actual lawyers wrote up that contract and then try and defend him in court...Shameful

Has there ever been a story where a defender lawyer’s loved one becomes a victim of a crime they once defended?

There is nothing wrong with being a defense lawyer. Yes, even for scumbags. Scumbags have rights too (and deserve to have their presumption of innocence defended unless evidence suggests otherwise beyond a reasonable doubt)

Agree, but some of them do suppress evidence and find loop holes to protect clients they know are guilty in thee name of profit.

Disappointing that a number of Weinstein's victims are settling out of court.

Many of the cases will be past the criminal statute of limitations. Therefore damages are the the only recourse for many so taking a settlement over a costly and uncertain civil trial probably makes sense for nany victims.

Hopefully the criminal trials that are happening will result in some sort of justice.

acquitted of the most serious charge against him though (predatory sexual assault and first-degree rape). at least he will do some time.

Third degree rape carries a max sentence of 4 years.

18 months in a country club incoming!

I'm still (pointlessly) angry about his disgracefully transparent 'Please acquit me - I'm old, confused, and use a zimmer frame' act.

...and Michael Jackson, in pyjamas. Shameless people.

I don't think anyone comes out of this well tbh.

His excuses at the time were feeble and pretty much just confirmed his guilt...but some of the evidence that's come out with this trial doesn't reflect well at all on the victims either (I mean the ones specifically with this trial...not necessarily the various others).

Not surprised the more serious charges came to nothing...though if I understand it right he's got at least one other trial coming up which could turn out different.

There's some of it.

Also the revelation that one of the accusers in this trial had text Weinstein after the alleged offences saying she "loved him", and "no one understands you like I do" or words to that effect...then was apparently told to delete the texts so they couldn't be used as evidence.

Tbh the whole case is a mess and if it were here may well have been thrown out I suspect. Not because of a lack of evidence but the handling of it has been extremely poor it seems.

Not that I think he isn't a scumbag mind, but the problem with rape/sexual assault cases is they often get very messy.

It's the bigger picture that truly matters though, and the long overdue warning to the powerful that they can't always expect to act with impunity.

There's nothing in that Independent article about the content of the texts?

It’s apparently the other charge of criminal sexual assault in the first degree that carries 5-25 years.

Ah, I assumed rape would be the more serious charge, but how they worked out that its third degree rape is beyond me.

I'll still be shocked if he gets a heavy sentence.
